Roman sat in his room. Virgil had just left. Left him alone. Alone with himself. Alone with his thoughts.

And his thoughts weren't all that helpful.

He's so beautiful.

He's so smart.

He's so kind.

He's so perfect.

He couldn't seem to stop the thoughts, even as he tried to distract himself. He thought about anything else, but his mind was on a loop.

Roman had had a grand total of 3 crushes ever. This felt like it, but so much more.

Was this love?

Some small part of him said yes.

He sighed, leaning into his chair. He looked down at his new Crystal and smiled.

It shone, strong and shy. The golden light pulsed, and he could feel it's warmth.

It was like another limb, it was such a part of him.

He ran his fingers over it, and let out a sigh of contentment.

Roman sat up at the sound of footsteps.

Virgil knocked on the door. At least, Roman thought it was seeing as he had no x-ray vision.

"Come in!"

Logan walked in.

Roman flinched for a second, causing Logan to smirk.

"Sorry, I thought that it was going to be Virgil."

"I know," Logan smirked, with a smug look in his eyes.

"Bag of blood. This may surprise your small brain," Roman pushed down the indignance and just listened.

"But I can see. I can tell you like Virgil, even if I couldn't read your mind."

"Lovely." Logan looked confused.

"What about this is attractive?"

"Sorry, that's just something that I say. It's not literal."

"I understand. Anyhaps, you need to control yourself. He is a Mage, and he will never like you. It is unwise to continue liking him. I recommend stopping now."

Roman just had a look on his face. He waited patiently for Logan to stop, and then calmly asked him, "What if I recommended you break up with Patton? What if I said it is unwise to continue feeling love for him? Would you just stop?"

"I get your point, popper. But what I have with Patton is more than you have with Virgil, by a long shot. We have been married for 739 years. How long have you been married to Virgil?"

Roman frowned. "I may not be married to him, but I feel for him at least a slight bit of how you feel for Patton. Would you give even the slightest bit of it up for the world?"

Logan looked him in the eyes, revealing a blue fire in his pupils. "I have underestimated your brain, but watch your step, boy. I love Patton more than the world, and nothing will come between us. I wouldn't give any of that for anything. You do not feel that way about Virgil. Maybe one day you will, but you should not dare compare us. I have been through more than you know for Patton. I would not hesitate to kill you if he asked."

With that, Logan's eyes relaxed. He leaned back, leaving Roman terrified.

The Drake smiled wide, revealing long, sharp teeth. He barked a laugh, and Roman almost fell out of his chair.

"Back to the reason I came in here. Virgil has asked me to teach you some Magick."

Roman nodded. Go with the flow.

Wise mindset, but why would you, when you could change the flow?

So, this was Logan's telepathic voice.

Duh, princeling.

"How should I start for Magick?"

"Focus on your Crystal. It has a vibration. Find it."

Roman focused on the warm golden glow. He held it in his hand but felt no pulse.

"Fool."

Roman focused harder and ignored the crystal in his hand. He focused on the one in his mind. It vibrated, and he copied the pattern into his mind.

"Better."

Roman opened his eyes, only then realizing he had closed them.

Logan was studying him.

"What is the one thing you wish for most in the world?"

Roman thought. There were so many things... but they all fell away. What did he want? What did he need?

"Nothing. There is nothing in the world I could wish for that I need. There are some things I would like."

The Drake nodded, the slightest bit impressed he didn't spill every wish he'd ever had.

"What are they?"

Roman thought. He'd seen more beauty and wonder on the last day than ever in his life. He had an escape, he had an adventure, he finally had a life.

"I have everything I've ever wished for. Everything except for one."

Logan nodded, waving his hand in a "Come on" gesture.

"I want wings."

Logan sighed. "I was expecting something even more idiotic, like one of those noble, but idiotic goals that will never be achievable, such as world peace. But that... that is vaguely attainable, even without Magick. It is also shallow."

Roman just nodded. He wasn't wrong.

Logan sighed. "Wings will take years. We only have a few hours before your case. Why don't we learn some easier Magick? And then, if you're lucky, you'll get to meet my brethren."

Roman nodded ecstatically. He wasn't entirely sure what that meant, but he was excited.

"Focus on your pattern. Learn it."

He left Roman sitting there for five minutes, focused only on the vibration.

"Take it off."

Roman did as told, but when he lifted it off his neck, he felt a need to put it back on. He forced himself to not, setting the Crystal down.

Logan studied him the entire time. He made small comments, things like "Remarkable self-control... compared to a cricket. Intelligence... but not more than the average rodent. Virgil got lucky with this one."

Roman forced his back to it. "Logan, do you mind sharing the purpose of this exercise?"

"It teaches you how it feels to be apart from your Crystal, how to deal with the effects, and shows me your levels of determination, self-control, and strength."

Roman nodded. He fought the burning need in his muscles to reach back. He focused on Logan.

"You may put it back on."

Roman almost sighed with relief but decided to show his restraint one more time. He waited a moment, bowing to Logan, before putting it back on.

Logan nodded his head at him and pulled a candle out of his pocket. He held out a finger, and a single spark of Magick left his finger, setting the wick ablaze. Roman watched with wide eyes.

Logan blew out the candle and focused on Roman.

"Elemental Magick is pure. It's strong, powerful, and basic. I never let apprentices learn it this early. It can be destructive."

Roman smiled. He wanted to play with fire. Logan raised a single eyebrow at him, and he replaced the smile with a studious look.

"Roman. Focus on the heat of your Crystal. Let the heat ring through you. Let it build in your soul. If it gains to the point of pain, direct it through your finger. Light the candle, if you can. You are weak enough I'm not sure if you'll be able to, but I will put up the proper wards, as to be cautious."

He waved a hand, and dark blue sparkled fell onto the table, and floor, melting into them. Roman nodded.

He focused on the heat. He fed it. He built it and brought it in him. It gained quickly and began to hurt. He focused on the candle. He focused, and as he did, he felt like he was burning on the inside. He pointed his finger at the candle and was surprised to see that his hand was on fire. He just kept to the task and sent a beam of red Magick to the candle. It would have caught the whole table on fire, if not for the wards.

Roman couldn't stop the fire. It began to consume him. It fed on his body, his mind, his soul. He was the fire, and it set everything ablaze.

Roman woke up a few minutes later, to see Logan quietly frosting everything over.

The flames were out, and there were no scorch marks, but Roman felt the pain still.

He tried to sit up. He knew he shouldn't but he had to see if he could.

"Stop. You're going to make it worse. Patton will be here in a moment."

Roman laid back down, only then realizing he was laying on the floor.

The pain made time irrelevant.

Eventually, a face came into focus.

Patton's pale blue eyes, white hair, pale skin, and freckles stood out against his brain. He was leaning over Roman, saying "Are you ok? Oh my goodness!" He waved his hands over Roman, and light blue Magick flew out, healing Roman wherever it touched.

He sighed in relief, and only then noticed Virgil standing near him. He looked so worried. Roman blinked through the slight pain. He gave Virgil a small wave, smiling at him. Virgil visibly relaxed and slumped into a chair.

Roman had a crazy idea. Could you hold my hand? It helped last time.

Virgil nodded and interlinked their fingers. A wave of relief rushed over Roman, and he snuggled into the hand weirdly.

Virgil turned neon pink. He said something that Roman couldn't make out.

Roman sighed happily as the pain went away.

He almost sat up, but remembered Logan's earlier statement, and stayed down. It didn't hurt that Virgil was still holding his hand.

Patton helped him up, and Virgil let go of his hand.

I have a reputation.

We can change that.

No. Whatever you're thinking, no.

But Roman noticed that his face was pink again.

Roman stood up and looked at Logan. "What was that?"

"You seem to have elemental fire power. Not common, especially in mortals." He said the last word like it was poison.

Virgil flinched, and Roman realized that he was probably mortal too.

Patton sighed. "Lo, what did I tell you about that word?"

Logan sighed, looking down. "Not to use it."

"So..."

"Don't use it."

"Thank you, Darling."

"Love you, Pat."

Patton giggled, light and happy. "Love you too, Logie bear!"

Roman raised an eyebrow at Virgil, who just shook his head.

Logan snapped out of his "Patton haze" (trademarked) and looked at Roman.

"You are more powerful than I thought possible for your kind. The council has found out, and are almost ready to meet you, although they have given us another 3 hours, upon my request."

Roman looked at him, confused. "Why did you ask for more time?"

Patton was bouncing up and down, excited, while Virgil was lightly clapping his knuckles. Logan had a bright spark of excitement in his eyes, one that scared Roman to the core.

"We get to meet my brethren."
