Robot

Logan grinned down at the man in front of him.

He knew this wasn't natural, he knew it was a glitch, a problem in his coding, but he'd never felt so... happy.

He wasn't supposed to feel, wasn't made that way.

But Patton was his override.

He remembered the day he met Patton.

He was ordered in the mail, just another LOGO-76.

He opened his eyes to a room full of posters and stickers.

He'd never seen anything so beautiful.

It was full of life, serving no real purpose. Compared to the minimalistic factories, it was a mess.

He saw a boy sitting in front of him.

He had brown hair, brown eyes, a LOGO shirt, gray jacket around his shoulders, and cats drawn on his shoes.

Logan (who was only LOGO-76 at that point) scanned him. He had bad posture, a childish demeanor, was approximately 12 years, 2 months, 23 days, and 6 hours old, and was sick.

He read the symptoms, raw nose, irregular breathing, and slight hunch of the back to avoid stomach discomfort, and found that he had a slight cold, and had had it for 3 days.

It was not serious, though he may wish medication.

He stood there silently, seeing as he was programmed to serve, and not ask.

The boy grinned up at him with evident delight.

He observed a LOGO-A17 toy in the corner and came to the conclusion that this boy was a fan of LOGO.

He said nothing, continuing to absorb information from the room.

"Hello!"

He looked at the child.

"Salutations."

"What's your name?"

"I do not have a name. My model is LOGO-76."

"Well... you need a name! Can you think of any you like?"

"I do not 'like' things. My programming is to serve, not emote."

"Oh."

The boy seemed a bit 'put out.' It was not his job to cheer him up, so he remained silent.

"Well... we'll just have to give you a name!"

He supposed the boy did not give up easily.

"Logo... logo... What about Logan?"

"Whatever you wish."

"Alright, Logan!"

Logan processed this, reaffirming it in his system.

"Download complete. You may address me as 'Logan'."

"Oh shoot! I forgot to tell you my name!"

The boy stuck out his hand, beaming.

"I'm Patton!"

Logan studied the hand quizically.

He did not understand if it was a social cue for something.

Patton laughed, reaching out and grabbing Logan's hand. He bounced it up and down, and then let go.

"You don't know how to handshake, huh?"

"I suppose not. Are there any other human customs not included in my programming?"

"OH! I've got one! What do you get when you cross a snowman with a vampire?"

"... that isn't possible."

"Frostbite!"

"Is that a human custom?"

"They're called jokes!"

"Oh."

Patton just grinned, ignoring Logan's confusion.

"Anyway, we're gonna be best friends!"

Logan looked at Patton.

Thanks to his expanded memory bank, he remembered every moment.

Playing with Patton, talking to Patton, meeting his friends, Patton coming out, Patton's birthdays, drawing, playing hide and seek, Logan remembered it all.

He remembered a new version of the LOGO-76. The LOGO-76+.

He was scared. It was new, having emotions.

He thought that Patton would replace him.

He asked him, and still remembered the words he said.

"A better version of the LOGO-76 has come out. If you wish to replace me, you may call the LOGO company for a discount."

"Logan, I don't want to replace you."

"Why? I am but a model, and a new one has come out. Do you not wish to upgrade?"

"No. It wouldn't be you."

"But it would. It would just be better."

"But... you're not replaceable. You're not the same as every other LOGO-76 model."

"I don't understand. What about me differs?"

"You and I have made memories together. We lived together! You aren't replaceable, because you have the memories and experiences with me!"

"You could make new ones."

"I don't want to! You mean... a lot to me, and..."

"Ah, human emotions. The bane of my existence."

Patton shook his head, "Anyway, I'm keeping you."

"Whatever you wish."

That was the first time Logan had ever felt emotion, and it had expanded past there.

He now felt more complicated emotions, something he detested.

"Do you think that robots can... love?" Patton asked, turning a bit red.

"Some of the newer models may have an emotion upgrade, but in general, no."

Patton sighed. "I mean... do you think that robots could feel affection for something?"

"Yes. I believe I have felt this 'love.'"

"For who?"

Logan held up his one true love, and Patton laughed.

"I should have known."

Crofters.

Patton frowned a bit. "Have you ever felt affection for a human?"

Logan replied with "It isn't in my programming to feel things."

Patton's face fell, and that's when Logan knew he was broken.

He felt so bad for hurting him.

"What is love?"

"I thought you knew. You have access to a lot of information."

"I wanted to hear the way you explained it."

"Huh... I guess love is... that feeling you get when you feel a lot of affection towards something. It's warm, and it makes you happy."

"Love is timeless for humans, but time itself is timeless for robots."

"I guess that's true."

"Someday I'll be in a world where you'll be far away from me. So far that it'll be impossible for me to see or talk to you ever again."

"Let's not talk about death..."

"But... I don't want you to die. I'm not supposed to want anything or feel anything, but... I don't want to lose you."

Patton gently took Logan's hand. "It's ok. We have plenty of time."

"When time is timeless for you, it seems to go by a lot faster."

Patton frowned. "We'll just have to make the most of the rest of our time."

"I... don't want to exist in a world without you. Does that mean I love you?"

Patton smiled. "I think so. I love you too."

Logan smiled. His programming didn't prepare him for this, so he didn't know what to do.

Patton reached forward, gently touching Logan's synthetic cheek.

"You know, I never dated anyone because there wasn't anyone I liked. The only person- uh, robot I've ever wanted to be with was you."

Logan smiled, liking the way it felt.

"I never wanted to be with anyone, seeing as we are not programmed to want things, but you changed me. I believe your kindness affected the way I am, and it made me capable of wanting and feeling. I was never made to love, but somehow, I love you."

Patton grinned, leaning forward to kiss him.

Logan decided he liked it.

The end.

Angst warning. Sorry peeps, this author is a depressed mess who likes to write angst.

They lived for many years together, working on robot activism.

As time passed, Patton became older. Logan stayed the same age he had always been, and still loved Patton.

Unfortunately, humans are mortal, and Patton passed away.

Logan understood why robots weren't supposed to love people. People die, and robots do not.

He never forgot Patton but began regretting his ability to feel sadness, as all he ever felt now was pain.

Every week, he'd take a single daisy to the place where Patton was buried, and plant it.

Soon, a daisy field began to bloom, one that showed the beauty and sadness of their love.

Eventually, Logan stopped leaving the house, as it was too painful.

To become happy, he shut himself down.

Maybe that way he'd get to see Patton again.

The end.
