Fear- Part 4

He was scared. There were people down there. One of them called him 'Virgil'. Was he Virgil? He tried to remember. The evident joy in that person's face almost made him want to be Virgil, but he had no idea what a Virgil was.

He was scared. How did he end up here? What was he doing? Who WAS he?

He looked around for some clues. He'd woken up in this room. It was a dark gray color. It had some spider webs. He was scared of spiders. He didn't like spiders. He had no idea how he knew what a spider was, but he did. And he knew that they were scary. Very scary. And Dangerous. He had to get out of here! But he couldn't go down there! There were people down there! And he couldn't stay here! He just looked around for a second, scanning for threats. The spider webs were fake. It was dark here. He didn't like the dark. There was a tiny mirror. He looked in the tiny mirror. Something was familiar there. The face... he'd seen that face... it was the same face as everyone's down there. Weird. He looked at his outfit. He wore a gray jacket with lavender patches on it. It was beautiful. There was something on the side, right above his heart. It was a simple sticker, with words on it. He couldn't read them right in the mirror, but he peeled the sticker off his jacket and looked at it.

'Hello, my name is:

Aiden'

He liked that. He liked his name. It was simple. It blended in.

He had a whisper in his head, it wasn't quite a thought, and it wasn't quite in words, it was just an implication.

It was a faint hint of jealousy, almost. It whispered in his head. He didn't much like it.

There was a knock at the door. It startled him, and he let out a very quiet "eep".

He stuffed the sticker into his left pocket. He didn't know why he did that, but there was no time to think. He looked around, heart beating fast. Hiding under the bed or in the closet would be obvious, but where else could he go?

He ducked into the closet and quietly shut the door, hiding in the few outfits that filled the space.

The door to the room opened, making a faint sound. He tried to regulate his breathing, tried to be absolutely silent, but his heart was pounding and his breaths were coming quickly.

The door stopped creaking, and a voice rang out.

"Hello? Are you in here?"

Aiden held his breath, not completely sure what he was so afraid of, but faintly trusting his instincts.

"Vir- Um... are you in here? Are you ok?"

It was all the same voice, an almost monotone mask over faintly concealed worry.

Aiden stayed silent, not trusting this stranger, no matter how concerned he sounded.

"Will you please come out? I won't hurt you, I just want to make sure you are ok. I'll help you."

Aiden didn't trust him. He stayed put, not daring to move a muscle. He was terrified, but he wouldn't act rashly.

He heard the person walking around, shuffling through the room and whoever owned it's belongings.

He could almost hear the guy check under the bed, and he was glad he didn't hide there, but knew it was only a matter of time before he checked the closet. Aiden resisted the urge to hide farther back in the clothes, scared of producing any sound that may alert the person who was searching for him.

The person got closer. He could hear the footsteps and the quiet, regulated, even breaths, and made his own breaths even quieter.

The person slowly opened the closet, and Aiden knew he would be discovered in an instant. He could run for it, causing the person to probably fall back in confusion and surprise, but it was a risky move and he could be captured instantly. Where would he even run to?! His muscles were tensed, and he fought the urge to flee, hoping beyond hope that he wouldn't be discovered.

"Are you in here? I really don't want to startle you, I just want to help you."

Aiden didn't believe him.

He really, really fought the urge to scooch away, but...

No, he'd be discovered. He froze.

The person began to shuffle through the clothes, getting closer and closer. Aiden held his breath.

The person got closer and closer, and Aiden fought the urge to run, knowing that it was too late. He'd be captured.

He stayed as still as a deer under headlights. He waited and waited for the inevitable.

It came.

The person pulled apart the jackets he was hiding in between, and he saw a concerned face with glasses.

He ran. He ran as fast and as hard as he could, but before he even took three steps, he felt a powerful pair of arms surround him, and he was completely immobilized. The person must have expected this. He fought and he struggled, but he didn't want to hurt the guy. The urge to run, the instinct that he was in danger, it all faded when the person didn't hurt him. The distrust and fear stayed.

The person fixed his face so it was more kind, and Aiden really didn't trust him.

He reached a hand out slowly towards Aiden, and looked only slightly surprised when Aiden recoiled and pushed his back against the wall. He tried to get away, but there was nowhere to run, and he was still trapped in the person's arms.

"Hello. I am Logic. Do you know what your trait is?"

Aiden did know. He shook his head, though.

"It's ok. I vaguely remember when I was formed, and the others have told me of their experiences. I believe you do know, but if you are not comfortable sharing, that is ok."

Aiden shrunk away. He did not like this 'Logic'. He was too... well, Aiden didn't know, but he was off somehow, and he could not be trusted. Be alert. Be aware, and stay alive. You are surrounded by enemies. You are not safe.

The whisper in his head came back. It had more sense, more form this time.

It tried to tell him that he was safe. He did not believe it.

Logic let him go, to Aiden's surprise. Aiden ran. He ran out of the room, he ran down the stairs, he ran past the startled faces, and though his lungs protested, he ran down the sidewalk, he ran past the nothingness, he ran down the pale sidewalk, and he did not stop. His legs burned, his lungs burned, he gasped and he tried to breathe.

He ran through a field of golden grass. He walked through the rest of it, too tired to continue. Once he caught his breath, he ran again, through a gray land, past a shimmering lake, past a giant tree. When he could finally no longer run, he was in a forest. The trees were tall, and the ground had many small plants. He collapsed to the ground, simply too tired to continue.

The day faded to a blur as exhaustion weighed him down. He fell asleep, adrenaline finally giving in. The word that kept filling his mind, the word that jumped to his understanding as soon as he formed, it echoed and repeated in his mind, it filled his thoughts, and it offered a certain comfort, the understanding of who he was: Fear.
