Based on Show Yourself

Virgil had done it. He had followed the fading voice and was near. He could feel it.

He was almost trembling from anticipation.

He could somehow sense that the person who was The Voice was here.

It was familiar, like he'd seen the person somewhere and forgotten.

He could have sworn that he'd met them, but it was buried in his mind, and he just couldn't reach it.

He'd always kept to himself, defending himself with boundaries that kept people from getting too close. The Voice did that too.

It felt like someone he'd always known like it was just someone he loved but forgot.

He felt so comfortable here, in this strange place.

He was in a high school. It was about 30 minutes away from where he lived, and it called to him with the promise of his Voice.

He was there, and as he looked around, no one stood out.

He knew, he knew he was in the right place.

So where was he?

For the first time in a bit, he began to doubt that the Voice was real.

He actually called out to it.

"I'm here! Where are you?! Please... show yourself?"

There wasn't a response for a few seconds, and Virgil felt his spirits fall.

It was perilous, getting your spirits up.

"I'm here, I'm here!"

"Where?"

"I think the same place you are. North Copeland High, right? You feel close."

*sorry if that's actually a place*

"I'm here."

"Wait... all those times I was calling out... there was someone there?"

"Yeah... I thought I was crazy."

"Me too... so where are you?"

"I'm in the cafeteria? I think? I don't go to school here..."

"Ok. On my way."

Virgil felt his hope rise.

This was the person he'd been waiting for.

He'd always been so weird, and now... he might find out why.

Maybe this person was his soulmate?

Maybe they were the whole reason he was alive.

He was ok with existing for someone else's happiness. It just felt... right.

He'd never truly been able to understand things, and they just didn't come naturally. But this one was truly... real. It broke through the fog of each day, and it just felt... right.

It was his purpose, this Voice.

He knew now, that this was the one thing he wanted in his life.

Something drew his attention. A person.

They stepped into the room, and Virgil felt tears in his eyes.

He looked at them.

They had tan skin, slightly wavy light brown hair, a red leather jacket, white jeans, and black converse.

They were beautiful, and Virgil saw them see him.

They smiled, and it was amazing.

Virgil felt himself moving before he registered it.

He needed to be with them.

They got closer, and Virgil got lost in the person's eyes. He felt complete.

They were so close, and Virgil was completely drawn.

This was the singular most beautiful person he'd ever seen, and his body acted without his permission.

They were within arms reach.

"Hello." They said, in the most beautiful voice ever.

Virgil wanted to reply, but apparently that was not on the menu for today.

Instead, he just kissed them, and the world melted away.

He would've cursed himself mentally for the lack of consent and kissing a complete stranger, but thinking was also not on the menu.

The person kissed back, and Virgil knew with absolute certainty.

This was his person. He was the answer to the question he never knew he asked.

This was his whole world, and he was what Virgil had never known he was waiting for.

Virgil finally got in control of himself and pulled away.

"I'm so sorry, I don't know what came over m-"

The person just kissed him again.

When it was over, they were both beaming and ignoring all of the stares.

"So.. hi."

Virgil said, blushing.

The person grinned. "Hello. I'm Roman."

A perfect name for a perfect person.  "I'm Virgil."

The person grinned. He took Virgil's hand, and while Virgil knew they just kissed in front of an entire room of high-schoolers, he was still embarrassed by the simple act.

"So... never knew my soulmate would be emo."

Virgil smiled at him. "You should've. We're the best people."

Roman chuckled, and Virgil felt like there was no better sound than that. He could listen to it all day.

"So, Soulmate, want to um... do that again?"

"Do what again?" Virgil was a bit confused.

"Mind if I show you?"

"No?"

Roman leaned forward and kissed Virgil again.

Virgil smiled into it.

He had found his soulmate.
