Have this AU!

Also this was heavily inspired by death-of-a-phangirl story. It's kind of like an alternate universe in an alternate universe. The mermaids have the same abilities and speak the same language as Death of a Phangirls mermaids do, but the story of mine is different.

Merman! Virgil

Roman walked through the gate that lead to his house. He sighed as he made it back. His day had been a hard one and he wasn't used to living in a mansion type house on the coast of Hawaii. He was from Boston, somewhere that was so different from where he is now.

He had always wanted to be a marine biologist and now he got a job at a sea life center. He was ecstatic when he found out. He bought a house on the coast and moved himself out to Hawaii. He had a huge house that could even see into the sea through a glass panel that was in the lower level. He could see all of the fishes that were swimming and could even sometimes see dolphins and sharks. It was great to look out and see some of the most fascinating creatures of all time.

So he went into his house, walked down the stairs, and pulled a chair towards the glass. He sat down and watched the sea creatures until he eventually fell asleep.

Virgil swam up to a glass structure he hadn't seen before. He hadn't swam this close to the surface since he was young. He thrusted his tail through the water and sent himself flying towards the wall of glass. He reached it and saw a place that looked to be the dwelling place of something. He stayed a tiny bit back and eyed around the waterless room beyond the glass.

He saw someone walk down some stairs and he quickly rushed behind a rock. He could still see what looked to be a human man. Virgil rarely sees humans. He saw the human let out a breath and then look out to the sea. He watched as the man looked at the fish and sea life that was there. Virgil looked in surprise as the man slightly smiled and then yawned. He saw the mans eyes close and Virgil came out from his hiding place.

He went up to the glass in almost a daze. He turned his head in confusion when the man started to stir and to look around. Virgil didn't feel the need to run away or hide. He wasn't afraid of this man and he almost felt comfortable with him. The man looked at Virgil through half lidded eyes that suddenly widened quickly. Virgil swam back a little in shock. He tilted his head as the man started to walk over to him. He stared at Virgil and put his hand on the glass. Virgil was even more confused now.

He slowly swam back over and placed his slightly webbed hand over the mans non-webbed one. The only thing stopping them from touching was the glass. Virgil then noticed his soulmate marks were glowing. He quickly took his hand away and inspected it closer. His hands shook at his new realization. This human was his soulmate. He had to test something. He swam slowly away from the glass, getting a head shake from the man and an almost desperate look for him to come back. As he swam slowly his soulmate marks faded. He swam back over and they glowed more. He put his forehead to the glass (a common tradition for mermaids and mermen when they found their soulmate) and closed his eyes, smiling slightly.

Roman was taken back by the merman's actions and he couldn't wrap his head around the fact that there was a merman right in front of him. And a very good looking one at that. The merman had beautiful pale skin with freckles and scales all over, scales mostly in the joint areas. His tail was bunches of shades of purple. From lilac to deep purple. It was shimmery and shiny. He had glowing red marks all over. He was in awe of the merman until he realized that he had swam back over to the glass and was placing his forehead against the glass. Roman was slightly confused until he smiled.

Roman walked up to the glass and put his forehead against the merman's and smiled as well.

Virgil opened his eyes and looked the human up and down. This was his soulmate...

Most merfolk would be scared or confused as to why their soulmate was a human, but Virgil was just happy to not be alone. Most people found him strange and scary. His sharp features were one of those reasons. He had an abnormal amount and color of scales and most people found that off putting. But this man was looking at him with just wonder and awe. This human was about as pretty as they come, and Virgil hadn't seen many humans in his time. His hair was honey brown and was curly on top. His eyes were a stunning green and he had suntanned skin and was just beautiful. Virgil looked down to his legs. He had never seen someone with such beautiful legs.

All merfolk can "turn on" their legs, but they were taught to not use them unless they were in immediate danger.

Virgil considered his options until he saw a door that led to a dock. He but his lip trying to decide if he was about to do what he was thinking. He took a leap of faith and gestured to the human, himself, and then the dock. The human looked confused at first and then he had a look of realization. He nodded and Virgil swam to the dock.

When Roman rushed out the door he saw the merman leaning against the dock. Roman rushed over to him. The merman's face lit up and he started to ramble.

"Auē kuʻu gosh! Ua manaʻo wau ʻaʻole ʻoe e hele mai! Akā ʻoe! A ʻo ʻoe nō hoʻi koʻu mea aloha! ʻOiai he mea liʻiliʻi loa kēia mai kou ʻano he kanaka akā akā he ala paha! ʻAʻole hiki iaʻu ke kali e ʻike e ʻike iā ʻoe a makemake maoli au e honi iā ​​ʻoe!" The merman rambled and Roman was trying to pick out what language it was, but he only knew French and Spanish.

"Whoa whoa, slow down! I don't know what you're saying." Roman said with a confused look.

The merman tilted his head, but his gaze was full of love. The merman reaches out of the water and cupped Roman's cheek.

"Aloha wau iā 'oe." The merman said and then leaned up and kissed Roman. Roman was shocked at first, but quickly melted into the kiss.

When they pulled back, Roman couldn't say anything. He was just kissed by a merman. He just had the best kiss he's ever had with a merman.

"Woah." Roman said breathlessly. They both just stared into each other's eyes for a moment until the merman spoke up again.

"I'm Virgil. And I'm your soulmate."
