Roman and Virgil (RomanxVirgil)

Warning : Major Character Death

AU

Two star-crossed lovers, from enemy kingdoms, met at at masquerade ball that neither was allowed to go to, named Prince Virgil and Prince Roman.

They had bumped in each other, literally, when they were backing up from some new friends.

They had turned and stared and danced the night away, like love at first sight. Virgil's left hand holding Romans right, both hands up, as Roman had his left hand on Virgil's waist and Virgil had his right hand on Romans shoulder.

They walked out of the ball at midnight, hand in hand, they sat on the stairs and talked. Their hobbies, interests, food, anything they could think about they talked about.

"Will you let me see the face of the man who stole my heart?" Roman had asked, holding Virgil's hand.

"As long as I see yours, my sweet."

They had taken their masks off, at first not seeing the resemblance to the enemy kingdom, but after asking names and being introduced as enemies. They had let go and backed up.

Staring in shock and disbelief, Roman took notice of how Virgil was the complete opposite of how his parents had said the Sanders were.

Virgil took notice that his parents were wrong, that the Crofters weren't murderers and monsters.

"Compared to you, I'm just a sin...."

Virgil had looked to the man, "you are no sin, Roman..."

Roman had grabbed Virgil's hand gently, "if my hands offended you with my sin... then my lips stand ready like blushing pilgrims..."

"You show devotion by touching mine... just as pilgrims reach out to touch the hands of saints... Palm to Palm, is like a pilgrims kiss."

"Don't saints have lips? Pilgrims too?" Asked Roman.

"Yes, lips they're supposed to pray with."

"Oh, then, saint, let lips do what hands do: pray. Grant my prayer or my faith will turn to despair." Roman begged, moving closer to Virgil.

Virgil smiled, "saints don't move, though they do grant prayers."

"Then remain still while I pray."

Virgil complied and stayed still as Roman gently placed his lips upon his. They had kissed that night, their soft lips gently moving together, matching perfectly like a puzzle piece.

That was all a year ago, they kept their relationship a secret and well hidden from people. They had snuck out of their kingdoms for a year and talked in sacred and middle ground.

However, Virgil that night, could not make it. His father was throwing a party, a masquerade, for him to fall in love with a person named Remy.

Virgil was in his room, his white prince outfit on with his dark purple sash and gold epaulettes on his shoulders and gold buttons. He wore a royal purple mask, with gold around the edge and a few small peacock feathers.

He sat upon his bed, frowning. He didn't want this, he wanted to be with Roman.

"Virgil? Virgil my love?" Whispered a voice.

The young prince ran out and saw Roman, in a similar suit to his, however with a red sash and his mask was a royal red, with black swirls and a small red rose, standing on a trellis filled with white roses.

"Roman, oh Roman!" Smiled Virgil, running to the edge.

Roman caressed his cheek softly and lovingly, "I have come to the dance."

"If they see you they'll murder you." Virgil said, gripping his hand fearfully.

"Alas, there would be more danger for me in one angry look from you than there would be from twenty of your relatives with swords. If you just look at me with love, their hatred would not be able to touch me."

Virgil smirked, "now you're just quoting Romeo and Juliet."

"And I've spoken no truer words." Roman smiled, as his boyfriend leaned down and placed a tender kiss upon his lips.

"Roman!" Whispered a voice from below, making both men turn. There stood their friend Logan, wearing a black suit and blue sash, he was no prince but he had it from the last party, he wore a blue mask with a blue feather, "come down, we'll be seen!" He said, pushing up his glasses.

"I'll see you inside, my love." Virgil promised.

"And I you, my dear." Roman climbed down and left the garden with Logan by his side.

Virgil smiled and picked up a red rose from the vase, a dozen flowers given to him by Remy, but he would give his true love a rose. Hiding it, he rushed downstairs, entering through a doorway that nobody looked towards.

He saw his friend who was in a a light blue suit with a gray sash, his mask a light blue as well with a small blue rose in the corner. Patton, his name was and Virgil went to him.

"Patton?"

The teen turned and smiled, "Virgil!"

"Give this to Roman when you see him?" He asked, handing the rose to his friend.

"Of course kiddo!" The man went to find Roman, who was entering with Logan.

Upon seeing each other, they walked to the other and took a similar position as they had the first time.

They again danced, their eyes full of love and passion, smiling at each other and joking.

"Virgil?"

"Yes my love?"

Roman smiled and took him out of the hall and into a secluded room, "marry me."

"Marry you?" Smiled Virgil, "what of our parents."

"Who cares? They won't understand." The man said, caressing his cheek.

Virgil stared lovingly and kissed him, his arms wrapped around Romans neck, as Roman moved his arms around Virgil's waist.

The door opened, "Virgil?"

Virgil looked up at the person and stared, "uh, Remy! Oh my god, I thought this was you!" He lied, sending a small apologetic look towards Roman.

Remy crossed their arms, "no. It's not, that's... Prince Roman?!" Immediately Remy drew their long sword and Roman did the same.

"Yes, it is I. Prince Roman."

Remy snarled, "do you bite your thumb at me?!"

"I am now that you have."

Virgil got in between them, "lets not fight. Our parents won't be happy we stared a war."

"I will start one if it meant protection for you." Remy said, pulled Virgil close.

Virgil squirmed uncomfortably, wanting to be let go, but Remy didn't pick up on this. Roman had.

"Let him go." He threatened.

"Or what?"

Roman swung his sword but Remy blocked, they kept swinging back and forth, backing up into the massive hall.

"Remy? What are you-" The King stopped and everyone stared.

Romans mask had fallen off and Logan's eyes widened behind his mask. The Queen glared, "guards! Get him!"

The guards moved in on Roman who backed up slightly, seeing he was severely outnumbered.

Virgil didn't waste a second and grabbed Remy's sword and swung it at the guard, slicing his back open, the man screaming.

The guards turned to their prince, who yelled, "run Roman!"

Roman listened to the command and ran, followed by Logan.

The King grabbed his sons sash and glared, "why would you let him go?!" He snarled.

Virgil stared at his father and then slowly looked to his mother and then Remy. He noticed Patton trying to get through, but was blocked off by guards as all the guests stared at him. All wondering why.

"Because I love him."

Not a second later, Virgil was throw into his room roughly, landing on his side and bruising his arm.

"Father, plea-"

"Silence!" The man looked down at his son, "you are to marry Remy, or be thrown out in the streets!"

"I'd rather die!" Shouted Virgil.

"So be it!" The king stormed out, locking all the exits.

Virgil got up and banged the door angrily, "let me out! Let me out!" He screamed, the door rattling.

Virgil's parents sent a letter to Roman's parents by owl, letting them know Romans appearance meant war.

Roman arrived home a few minutes after the letter arrived. He panted and looked around, tasting metallic.

Logan had left halfway through run, saying his parents won't be happy.

"Where was you son?" Asked the Queen, as if she knew, with the King at her side.

Roman paused, he looked up and immediately lied, "hunting."

"Hunting? Is that why we got a letter? Off the enemy kingdom! Telling us your dating that, that, that.... freak!!!"

Roman glared at his mother, "do not call him a freak."

The Queen gripped his right shoulder and glared, "you was at the masquerade ball to see him! Do you deny?!" Her fake, sharp, red nails dug into his soft, tender skin.

He hissed in pain and teared up, already feeling it bruise and puncture, "no! I don't deny!"

The King, who previously refused to believe the letter, stormed to him and pulled Roman by his hair roughly, in anger.

"Ah! Father let go! You're hurting me!" Cried Roman, struggling against the King who was pulling him to his room, his scalp now in pain.

He pushed his son into his room and locked the door.

"No! Father! Let me out!" Roman shouted, jiggling the door knob and banging on the door.

He turned around and went to open his window, only to see guards locking it.

Roman slowly backed up and sat on his large bed and frowned. He wiped his teary eyes, desperately trying to stop the tears from flowing, wanting to get out.

Back with Virgil, the young Prince was looking around trying to find anything to pry open his door.

He saw a gold fireplace poker and grabbed it. He looked towards his glass window and smashed it open, not caring to keep it neat and tidy.

The King and Queen could pay for the damages.

Virgil climbed down the trellis and picked a white rose from the garden to give to his boyfriend. He snuck into the weapons room, grabbing a sword, made of metal and silver, with black and purple rubies and stopped by the apothecary, seeing if he had fast poison.

He was planning to kill Romans parents slowly and painfully if they had done anything bad to his boyfriend.

He ran to the stable, climbed on a horse and rode off to find his love.

Roman punched his mirror angrily, crying. Smashing the mirror, successfully cutting his knuckles open.

The young man lay down on his bed, 'maybe sleeping will help me think of a plan?' He thought, resting his sore hand and letting it soak into his white bed sheets.

He soon fell asleep.

Virgil arrived and went to Roman's windows, "Roman? Roman? My sweet, are you there?" He called, quietly.

The prince frowned when he got no response and climbed the stone wall, slipping every few minutes due to the lack of grip and finally reached the balcony.

Upon realising that the window was locked he frowned and sliced through the locked and went in.

Virgil saw his love, laying in a blood soaked bed. The princes eyes widened in panicked and gently shook the prince.

"Roman?" He whispered and did not get a response.

The prince in bed was a heavy sleeper. Incredibly heavy, but poor Virgil did not know this.

Virgil frowned and thought the worst, he took Roman's hand gently. "Why would you do this?" He asked, tearing up and the salty tears falling down his cheek and placed the white rose on Roman's chest.

He took out the poison he planned on giving to his parents and looked to Roman, "you are still handsome. Death must love you and wish to take you from me. So, I shall stay with you and protect you." He said, caressing Romans cheek, gently tickling him. Roman opened his eyes, unbeknownst to Virgil, "come, bitter transport. Come, unpleasant guide. Take me to my true love, so I can love and protect him more. To the man of my dreams." He said, as if a speech, lifting up the vile of poison, as if a toast, "here's to my love."

He drank the poison in one large gulp, as Roman grabbed his hand suddenly, smiling from the kind words, but looked on in confusion.

Virgil eyes widened and looked down, "R-Roman?" He felt the poison taking place.

"Virgil...?" He sat up the rose falling onto Virgil, who was lying down, shaking, "my love? What did you take?"

Virgil lifted his hand and moved Romans hair from his face, "I thought you had died...."

"What did you take?" Roman asked, tears rolling down his face slowly.

"P-poison."

Roma grasped the small, empty vile and smiled sadly, "how selfish, drinking it all, not leaving a drop to help me follow after you." He scolded lightly and leaned down to Virgil, "I'll kiss your lips. Maybe I'll be lucky and there's still some poison on your lips, a bit of medicine that will return me to you."

He leaned down and kissed Virgil who kissed back slightly, tears flowing down his cheeks, mixing with Roman's tears.

Roman's tears flowed faster as Virgil smiled lightly, "thus with the kiss.... I die...."

Virgil's breathing stopped and looked blankly at the ceiling. The life in his eyes gone.

Roman held him and cried, "Virgil!" He sobbed and looked at him, taking notice of the sword in its sheath.

He picked it up with shaking hands, "oh happy sword. I'll be your sheath. Let me die!" He plugged the sword into his stomach and yelled in pain.

He fell next to Virgil on his side, his left arm falling over his boyfriends body and the white rose and died, blood soaking their clothes, the sheets and droplets landing on the rose upon Virgil's body.

Roman and Virgil was not found until morning, when a servant walked in holding a sliver tray of food.

She screamed and dropped the food, as it clattered to the ground. The noise alerted the King and Queen who ran in and froze upon seeing the two boys.

They cried and held each other. Their only child dead.

The King wrote a tear stained letter to Virgil's parents who rushed over and broke down into tears.

They placed Roman and Virgil in a tomb together, on two slabs of marble close to each other, Roman's left hand and Virgil's right hand dangling over the side, as if trying to hold hands.

The kingdoms made peace to mourn.

Poor Patton and Logan sobbed, they lost their best friends and held each other. They passed on Virgil and Roman's story to others, to teach and for them to learn.

That morning brought a gloomy peace with it. The sun would not shine because of that sadness. Go forward, to talk more about these sad things. Some will be pardoned, and some will be punished. For there was never a sadder story than this one of Virgil and his Roman.
