Remy didn't know what went wrong. What he'd done wrong. He didn't understand why this was happening. He thought things had been going well, he thought things were going to continue happily.
"Why do you hate me so much?"
The words left Remy's mouth before he could process them, and Emile stared at him with a sad expression. "I don't... I don't hate you. It's just, I don't think it's working out. I've realized some of my behaviors aren't- they aren't the greatest. And... I don't want to hurt you more than I already have."
When Remy's tears continued to slide down his cheeks, Emile went to wipe them away. But then he stopped himself, drawing back and shaking his head. "I've been too possessive... I need to get help, and I don't want to continue hurting you. So... Please, go. Things will be much better this way."
And so, Remy left.
He didn't know where he was going. His tears blurring his vision, his legs seemed to carry him without him truly knowing where he wanted to go. He thought about the previous year, and now that he thought about it...
Emile had started to isolate him from his friends and family. But he thought he could trust Emile. He loves Emile. And Emile had started to claim that he shouldn't see certain people because of the minor things they did. And Remy believed him.
He took in a deep, shaky breath. Was it starting to rain?
He hugged himself. He was glad Emile had broken it off before it got worse, but it still hurt. He still loved Emile. And if he hadn't broken up with Remy, Remy knew he wouldn't have noticed for a long time.
Remy found himself outside a park, why he didn't just go home, he didn't know. Maybe because he didn't want to see all the pictures of him and Emile on the walls or shelves just yet.
He found a bench and sat on it, the drizzling rain had stopped again. The clouds above didn't seem ready to unleash their wrath just yet.
Remy pulled his knees to his chest. And as he cried, he realized why he came to the park. It was where he used to come when he was younger and wanted to relax. It's where he came when he ran away from home. And where he met most of his friends.
It was a comfort to him.
He continued to cry, sunglasses abandoned beside him on the wood. If anyone realized Remy was crying, they seemed to not make any attempt to engage with the man. He wasn't sure whether to be saddened or relieved.
It wasn't until his name was said did he realize just how saddened it had made him.
"Remy?"
A familiar voice, and the old bench creeked quietly as more weight was added to it. Remy could feel the person's hand hover near him, before pulling away, unsure.
Remy looked up from his knees, wiping his eyes and looking to his side. His words caught in his throat as he saw Roman, someone he used to call a best friend. And suddenly, it felt like even more of him broke upon seeing the familiar face of someone who used to always be by his side.
Roman's eyes widened as he realized that this was actually Remy, he had only taken a wild guess from the sunglasses and leather jacket. He hadn't expected it to actually be him. And he certainly didn't expect to see Remy crying on a park bench all the times he imagined them seeing one another again.
Roman's arms were around Remy in an instant, and Remy felt as if the three months he hadn't talked to Roman had never happened. He clung to Roman tightly, and Roman rubbed his back soothingly, drawing circles slowly.
"It's been too long, Remy, where've you been?"
Remy couldn't form an answer. He wasn't ready to say yet. Instead he said, "It doesn't matter- and please don't worry, I'm fine-"
"Remy, I just found you crying in your comfort park." Roman's voice was gentle but firm. He pushed Remy away slightly, brushing away the man's tears. "What happened?"
And once again, Remy wondered just what it was about this park that seemed to know when he really needed someone.
