Human/Soulmate AU

Virgil yawned quietly, resting his head on his arm. He used his free hand to play with the petals, feeling their silky soft texture. Virgil's eyes were half-lidded, and it was taking a great amount of strength to not fall asleep on the job.

Virgil worked in a flower shop. The owner sold all kinds of flowers, from roses and daisies to cacti and young trees, even. Most of the time, people would come in and buy gifts for their soulmate. It was beginning to become annoying whenever that happened, especially since he had yet to find his soulmate and grew tired easily when customers would rant about their soulmate.

Virgil raised his head lazily when the bell of the shop jingled softly. "Welcome to Silver's Flora, if you need any help with anything please let me know." Virgil spoke with a monotone voice, not even looking at the customer.

The customer shrugged off the encounter and walked towards the counter. "Do you guys have any coral roses?"

Virgil glanced up, slightly surprised. "Um... yeah, I think so." Virgil stood from his chair, walking around the counter. He took in the appearance of the woman standing a few feet away from him.

She had short, brunette hair. And her eyes were a golden brown, reflecting the sunlight filtering through into the building. She wore an oversized blue sweater, with dark leggings and simple black boots.

"I'll be right back with the roses. How many would you like?" Virgil asked, not meeting her gaze. He really didn't like this part of his job.

"Six, please." The woman said, and Virgil nodded. He disappeared around a corner, walking a bit further to the center of the isle. He knelt down, and carefully grabbed six of the bright reddish orange roses that had been asked for.

He placed the roses into a bouquet, before bringing it back to the woman. "Why coral roses, if I may ask?" Virgil asked. He was genuinely curious, since most didn't buy these types of roses.

The woman pulled out her wallet to grab some money as she answered. "They're for my soulmate! Coral roses, from what I heard, mean friendship. My soulmate and I are staying just friends, since I already have a boyfriend." She explained, placing the money on the counter.

Virgil blinked for a moment. "That's... that's actually pretty cool." He said, passing the bouquet to the woman. She smiled and thanked him before leaving the shop. Virgil sighed and went back to leaning on the counter, bored.

Virgil unlocked his door, walking into his shared apartment. He tossed his keys onto the nearby table, closing the door with his foot. On the couch, Logan was propped against the arm with a book in hand.

Logan looked up when he heard the door close. "Hello Virgil, how was work?" Logan asked his friend. He placed a bookmark into the book and closed it, focusing on Virgil. Virgil shrugged.

"It was fine, business was slow." He responded, plopping down onto the couch beside Logan. Logan hummed in agreement. Silence settled over them comfortably. That was, until Logan broke it.

"Hey, is it okay if Patton comes over with a friend?" Logan inquired. Virgil raised an eyebrow.

"Which friend?" Virgil asked. He really hoped it was someone he knew. But knowing Patton, it wouldn't be.

"I don't know, he didn't say." Logan answered, and Virgil sighed in annoyance.

"Fine... what time?" He asked Logan, glancing at him.

"Hm... Five today." Logan said. Virgil glanced at the clock, seeing it was already four.

"Alright. Shit! I nearly forgot!" Virgil jumped from the couch and walked swiftly to his bag. Virgil picked it up from the table, opening it and taking out a bouquet of white roses. "Give these to Patton as a gift," Virgil said.

Virgil handed them to Logan. Logan gladly took the roses, turning them over in his hands. "Don't white roses mean purity and innocence?" Logan inquired.

"Yeah, figured they fit Patton." Virgil said, sitting back on the couch and pulling out his phone.

"Virgil, Patton hasn't been pure or innocent for about three months now." Logan said. Virgil started choking on air, looking at Logan. Logan had an amused and slightly satisfied smirk.

"Fucking hell...." Virgil exclaimed. "I did NOT need to know that!" Virgil added on, glaring at Logan. Logan just rolled his eyes and opened his book, returning to the fictional world. Virgil gently tugged a necklace out from the collar of his jacket, examining the crown charm.

It was said that when you finally meet your soulmate, the charm will buzz and glow a soft pink hue. You couldn't leave the charm off, either. You always had to have it on you. It wasn't a law, but the charms had a mind of their own. If you tried taking it off aside from showering, it will literally burn your skin.

Virgil sighed and went back to his phone, opening Instagram and scrolling through the feed to pass time.

❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁

Virgil heard a loud knock on the door, and he jumped awake. His heart rate picked up quickly before relaxing when he saw Patton follow Logan into the room. Virgil stood and greeted Patton with a hug, before letting go of Patton so he and Logan could embrace.

Virgil didn't notice him at first, but a stranger stood in the doorway watching Logan and Patton. The stranger shook his head and looked at Virgil, a smile appearing on his face. "Hello, sir! You must be Virgil, I'm Roman." The man, Roman, approached Virgil and held out his hand. Virgil hesitantly took it.

Virgil took his hand back when he felt his charm begin to vibrate softly against his chest. His breath caught in his throat. Roman seemed to have frozen up as well, eyes beginning to widen. They just stared at each other for a few moments, before Patton brought them back into reality.

"Virgil? Roman?" Patton waved his hand in front of their faces. Virgil was the first of the two to break eye contact, and he smiled at Patton reassuringly. Patton seemed to sigh in relief. "Virgil, Logan said you got me these flowers! I hope it wasn't much trouble!" Patton was holding the bouquet Virgil had brought home.

"Yep, and don't worry. Mrs. Jenkins let me take them free." Virgil said, and Patton nodded, smelling the sweet flowers.

"I ordered some pizza, since the cook," Logan briefly glanced at Virgil with an annoyed expression, "fell asleep before you two arrived." He finished, and Virgil shrugged it off.

"It was your turn to make dinner, genius." Virgil retorted quickly, becoming defensive of himself.

"Who cares? It's pizza!" Roman spoke for the first time since his greeting. He seemed to be full of energy, despite having a slightly pale face.

"Roman's right! While we wait, we can all just relax." Patton said, and Logan nodded in agreement. Virgil happily agreed. He knew he couldn't escape to his room, because that would upset Patton. He and Logan made a deal. When they had guests over, especially a stranger, neither would hide away in their room. Virgil would normally leave Patton and Logan to themselves when it was just them three, though.

Patton and Logan were quick to claim the couch, and Virgil gagged slightly as Patton curled up into Logan. Seeing Logan show his feelings of affection felt weird to Virgil. He, however, didn't voice his opinion like Roman did.

"Is there... Is there somewhere we can go... away from that?" Roman asked, poking Virgil's arm gently. Virgil jumped slightly, and glanced at Roman. He looked between Roman and the two soulmates on the couch. He quickly analyzed the situation. Either stay out here and watch Logan be affectionate and all lovey dovey or go into his room with Roman, his supposed soulmate.

Soulmate it was.

"We can hideout in my room. I'm sure they'll be fine." Virgil said, quickly walking towards the hall and entering his room. Roman followed at the same quick pace, and Virgil closed the door behind them. "God I hate when Logan is like that..." Virgil muttered. Screw their deal, Virgil would rather not see lovey dovey Logan.

"You have a rather... dark... taste in decorations." Roman said, looking around the room. Virgil raised an eyebrow, about to defend himself, but Roman cut him off. "It's nice, not very bright, but the colors o well together. And the lighting fits the theme." He said. Virgil just sighed and sat on his bed, pulling his legs up and looked at Roman.

Roman hesitantly sat in Virgil's desk chair, swerving it slightly so he to could watch Virgil. "So.... we're...." Virgil muttered.

"Yeah.... I guess." Roman said. He raised his sleeve up a bit, showing a bracelet with a storm cloud charm. Virgil took his necklace out of hiding, watching both charms buzz and glow pink. Virgil had a blank face as he stared at them, while Roman was a mix of joy and fear. Virgil coughed slightly, breaking the silence that had fallen over them. He put his charm back into his jacket, and Roman hid his under his sleeve again.

""What do you... wanna talk about?" Virgil asked. He wanted to know more about his soulmate. This was literally the person that he could spend the rest of his life with. Virgil started to have thoughts that maybe Roman didn't want to be together, that he might judge Virgil, and a bunch of other possibilities that could leave Virgil in a broken state.

Roman hummed slightly, thinking for a moment. "What do you do for a living?" He asked, leaning on the desk chair.

Virgil shifted so he was lying on his stomach now, holding his head up on his hands. "I work at a floral shop. The owner, Mrs. Jenkins, owns a ton of different kinds of stores in this city." Virgil gestured to some purple irises that were on his desk. "A birthday gift she gave me a few months ago." Roman had turned to look at the flowers curiously.

"They look really nice! It was a nice gift." Roman said, and Virgil nodded. "I create character designs for a living." Roman said, smiling. "It's a lot of fun. Unless you have to draw a character with, say, a lot of intricate clothing. Usually you need to draw the character multiple times, so it gets annoying. But the end result is always nice." Roman said, and Virgil laughed quietly. "What?" Roman inquired, tilting his head and glaring slightly.

"Do you usually ramble?" Virgil asked, glancing up at Roman. Roman's cheeks flared pink, and he averted his eyes down. Virgil laughed softly again. "Don't worry. It's kind of cute. Could you tell me more?" He asked. His own cheeks were feeling warm as he spoke. Roman seemed to blush more, but he returned his eyes to lock with Virgil's.

"You really want to hear more?" Roman seemed cautious and disbelieving. Virgil nodded. "Well, okay." Roman said slowly.

"When designing characters, you need to keep in mind where they live. Like the needs to survival, clothing that's in fashion, what is also manageable. You also want to stray away from picking too many clashing colors, like a bright orange and a murky green. Also keep in mind different hair styles, and body features like height, freckles, scars, and tattoos." Roman explained. Virgil watched as Roman seemed to melt into his own world, enjoying the fact that someone actually wanted to hear about what he did for a living.

They talked like that for about ten minutes, going back and forth about their interests and lives. They abruptly stopped when Logan knocked and opened the door. Logan peeked his head in. "Pizza's here, you can grab a slice or two and come back in here if you want." He said before disappearing. The two followed Logan out of the room, and the smell of pizza filled the apartment.

As offered, both Roman and Virgil took two slices each. "Thanks for the pizza!" Roman said to Logan before disappearing into Virgil's room again. This time they both sat on Virgil's bed, relaxing on the soft mattress.

"Wanna watch anything?" Virgil asked, pulling his laptop onto the bed with them. He opened it and entered a pin before looking at Roman. Roman shrugged.

"A Disney movie? Maybe Mulan or The Lion King?" Roman suggested, taking a bite of the pizza. He watched as Virgil pulled up Netflix, clicking on his account and searching through his list briefly. Roman watched as dozens of Disney movies passed by with the click of the mouse. "You're also a Disney fan?" Roman inquired.

Virgil shrugged, before clicking on a movie and raising the volume. "Yeah. Okay found Mulan." He put the movie onto full screen, and both men leaned against Virgil's headboard. Virgil moved the computer so it rested on one of their legs each, and they rested their pizzas on the other leg. The movie went to the opening scene, and the two relaxed, leaning on each other as they began watching.

Roman took a deep breath, watching his reflection in the mirror. His hair was styled perfectly, and he wore his usual white tee and dark jeans. His bracelet didn't glow now, since he and Virgil had gotten together a few years ago. But he still wore it, because it was like a good luck charm to him. He smiled at his reflection, though it was nervous. Even he couldn't dream of it becoming a genuine smile until he knew everything was going to go well.

Deciding there was no point in waiting any longer, Roman walked out of his bathroom. He grabbed his keys off the table and walked out the door, locking it behind him. Roman slipped his keys into his pocket and started to walk to the park where Virgil had agreed to meet him. He couldn't help but constantly check his pocket, and start second guessing himself.

What if Virgil's not ready? What if he doesn't like the preparations and effort Roman put into this? What if he thought it was too cliché or too boring? Too extravagant?

Roman shook his head, glaring at the ground. "Relax, Roman! No matter what he thinks, things will go well. Trust yourself." Roman hissed to himself, gripping a small box in his pocket. His shoulders relaxed slowly as he forced positive thoughts to cloud his mind. Thoughts about his future with Virgil, his career, home, etcetera. These thoughts calmed his nerves long enough to where Roman didn't even notice when he arrived at the park.

He looked up from the ground, and glanced around, the evening light making the park more beautiful than it normally was. Roman scanned people, looking for a certain emo. Once he spotted him, Roman walked in long and confident strides to his boyfriend. Roman grabbed Virgil's hand, making the other jump in surprise.

Virgil visibly relaxed when he saw Roman. "Oh thank god it's just you." He said, and Roman laughed slightly and leaned down. He pressed his lips against Virgil's in a firm kiss, squeezing his hand gently. They pulled apart a few seconds later, smiling at one another. "So, what did you want to come here for?" Virgil inquired.

"It's a surprise, Darling." Roman said, smirking at Virgil as he watched a blush settle on Virgil's face. "Come on," Roman started to walk, and Virgil followed gladly. Their fingers were still intertwined as they walked along the path. There weren't many people out, and Roman was leading Virgil to a secluded part of the park they had found years back on their first date.

"Okay, can you close your eyes, Love?" Roman asked, looking at Virgil. Virgil hesitated, but closed his eyes anyway. "Alright, how many fingers am I holding up?" Roman held up his hand, but didn't raise any fingers.

"Two?" Virgil guessed, though he couldn't see anything. Roman smiled, relaxing.

"Alright, follow my lead. And don't open your eyes." He said, gently pulling Virgil along with him. Roman lifted a large branch and guided Virgil under it before letting it fall back into place. "Just a little farther," Roman murmured, his hands starting to feel sweaty.

They made it to their destination, and Roman let go of Virgil's hand. He wiped his hands on his jeans nervously, stepping in front of Virgil. Roman leaned in and pressed their lips together in a short kiss, before pulling away slightly and murmuring against Virgil's lips, "I hope this doesn't make you hate me," before fully moving away.

"Alright, you can open your eyes." Roman said, rocking on the balls of his feet nervously. He watched as Virgil opened his eyes uncertainly, and he looked around the small clearing. Roman watched as Virgil's eyes widened in surprise, mouth ajar. "Do you like it?" Roman asked, wrapping an arm around Virgil's waist carefully.

"Like it? Like it?! It's amazing!" Virgil exclaimed, turning to Roman and jumping onto him in a hug. Roman laughed a sigh of relief, holding Virgil up.

The clearing was decorated to how it looked on their first date, ever. Which, was technically Virgil's old room, eating pizza. So there was a makeshift bed, chair, and desk, with replicas of most of the items in Virgil's old room. The only things that were different was there were no walls, and the lighting was the light from the quickly setting sun. There was even a pizza box sitting on the bed, but no laptop.

"So, shall we feast?" Roman gestured to the pizza, smiling. Virgil nodded, and the two sat on the bed together. Roman opened the box and they each grabbed a slice, starting to talk about anything and everything.

About an hour later, when the sun had set and they were about to head home - Roman planning on coming back the next day to clean up - they were about to leave before Roman stopped Virgil. "There's one more thing," he said. "But you need to close your eyes again." Virgil did as he was told, less cautious this time. Virgil could hear grass shifting and crickets chirping nearby. "Alright, eyes open." Roman said.

Virgil opened his eyes. When he didn't see Roman at his level, he looked down and jumped slightly when he saw Roman on one knee. His cheeks flared red as he processed what was going on, while also trying to listen to the words falling out of Roman's equally blushing face.

"Virgil, you are honestly the best person I could ever be soulmates with. I remember fretting that my soulmate would be awful, terrified that they may reject me. Judge me, ridicule me. But after I met you, and my storm charm started buzzing, my worries lifted. It was one of the best days of my life. And even since then, you've stuck by me. You helped me when my career went downhill for awhile, picked me back up. And I helped you, helped you with panic attacks and helped get you your own shop. I've never been happier. But I think I can be, if you agree to marry me?" Roman pulled out the velvet box, opening it.

It was silent as Virgil gazed down at Roman. His vision was blurred by tears, his hands covering his mouth as he tried to find words. Roman was holding his breath, and it felt as if his heart was frozen in his chest; waiting for a simple yes or no.

Then, very, very quietly, "yes."

Roman looked up, and Virgil cleared his throat. "Yes," he repeated. Roman sighed in relief and got to his feet. He gently held Virgil's right hand, slipping the ring over his ring finger. Roman pulled Virgil close, connecting their lips in a passionate kiss that Virgil returned. When they pulled away, Roman squeezed Virgil tightly, laughing happily.
