Remus is Afraid Of the Dark(get this man a nightlight)

A/n: Okay, so it has been...um, quite a while...😅😅😅

As some of you may know, i'm in my high school's marching band. And it's football and competition season, so i've been very busy since June. The only day I don't have rehearsal is Wednesday, (sometimes monday)and on Wednesday's I have church. Sundays are another day but as ya'll know...church. Also I babysit
so😰😰😰

And because competitions are right around the corner, i'm going to be even more busy. I write when I can though. I've been writing this on and off since I got it, but i've never actually had the tike to just sit down and write it all at once. And when I did have free time, I was chillin with the fam. So sorry lol

For fallen_willow_tree Thank you for the request! And for being so patient! :))

Remus had a fear.

Shocker, right? Most would assume that Remus feared nothing. And not because he was brave, no—because he was batshit crazy, and kind of an idiot.

So obviously, nobody would assume that he had a deep traumatic fear of being in the dark because of some elementary school bullies who would lock him in a dark janitor's closet every day and convince him that there was something in there trying to get him, telling him that his intrusive thoughts were real and telling him the truth and that his family was dead and he was alone in a cave—

And this was exactly why when Virgil and Patton would ask him to come over for slumber parties or sleepovers, he'd immediately shoot down the idea with a no. That itself was kind of concerning, because Remus was so the type to be into sleepovers. The truth or dare, the games, the permanent marker pranks you pull when the first unlucky victim falls asleep—and the gossip.

But Remus always turned down the offer, because what were the chances that they'd let him sleep with a night light on, no questions asked? He needed one every night and was kind of afraid of being laughed at for it.

He knew that the most that would happen was that Virgil would scoff or snort at him, maybe say 'really dude?' But ultimately allow it because he was actually a softie who deep down cared. Heck, Patton himself probably had fairy lights he used every night, and heaven knows he wouldn't judge Remus for it.

Still though, the answer had been no every time. He just couldn't shake off the fear he felt when he was in the dark. It was instantaneous when the lights were turned off, a fear—something in him that just snapped.

That being said, he was totally that one  kid in class that screamed when the power went out.

————————————————————

Remus sighed in boredom, throwing his head back and groaning quietly. (And no, he didn't understand what Virgil was talking about when he said that him and Roman were so much alike.)

The teacher was rambling about some super simple math equation that even he knew how to solve. His short attention span couldn't take this, and if the teacher didn't stop going over what the difference between area and perimeter was, he was going to loose it. What were they, fifth graders? No! They already knew this stuff! They learned it years ago!

"Pssst!" He heard from beside him, a small note being passed to him by Patton. He unfolded it and read its contents.

'Would you like to come to a sleepover tonight?!?! <3'

He turned to his side and gave Patton a blank look, before writing a response.

'No. You know how I feel about those kind of things.'

He passed it back and watched as Patton frowned at the note, furiously scribbling down on the paper.

'BUT PLEASE?! You never come! Why don't you like sleepovers?'

Remus rolled his eyes.

'I'm not afraid of anything I just don't do those types of things. Enough."

Patton smirked, before writing down his response.

'No! Why? Why do you shut us out? Why do you shut the world out? What are you so afraid of?'

'I'm not Roman, I will not play into your theatrics' Remus wrote back.

Virgil snatched the note from Remus and began to write something of his own.

'Remus if you don't bring your trashy ratty ass over to Patton's house tonight i'm going to tell Roman that you've been using his toothbrush as a foot cleaner.'

Remus whipped around and stared at Virgil, "how did you even know that?!" He hissed quietly.

"Your feet smell like Roman's mouth—I mean, mint toothpaste" Virgil whispered back quickly.

"Wait first of all—how the hell do you know what my feet smell like, and second of all, how do you know what toothpaste Roman uses?!" Remus asked.

"I—I'm not answering either of those" Virgil hissed.

"Please, Remus? Will you come? Just this once?" Patton asked, eyes wide and begging.

Remus smirked, about to open his mouth to make some kind of dirty joke when Virgil shot him a death glare, his hand raised in the signature if you say that I will murder you pose, and Remus just sighed, "fine. I'll come."

———————-1————————————

It was a horrible idea and he knew it. From the second he agreed, he'd been dreading going. But Patton and Virgil were excited and he couldn't back out now, they were already planning it.

He didn't understand them. He understood Patton wanting a sleepover—but Virgil? Wanting to go to a slumber party? It was unheard of. Why did they even want to invite him? They had way better friends!

And as much as he hated the notion of going to sleep, he had to admit that the sleepover had gone very well at first—he loved hanging out with his friends, and he wouldn't have a problem spending the night if it wouldn't be so dark. But the dark was just a complete deal breaker.

"Okay guys—we probably should've invited Janus or something because a lot of these games are hard to play with just three people" Patton said, putting down a blue seven, "Uno!"

Virgil grumbled, putting down a wild card, "i'm changing the color to yellow. Also, hell no, there's no telling what Remus and Janus would do on your floor."

Remus sighed and drew a card, which so happened to be yellow so he put it in the stack, "yeah, you guys are pretty lame. Janus would really brighten the mood."

"What?! No we aren't!" Patton exclaimed, giggling as he put down a yellow draw two card, "I win!"

Virgil threw his cards down and groaned, "are you serious?! You've won every game so far, you're definitely cheating!"

"Don't be such a sore loser!" Patton chuckled, "i'm sure you'll win next time!"

"No, there won't be a next time, because both of you are driving me insane!" He cried, "let's do something else, we've been playing for like, three hours, I didn't even know that this many card games existed."

"Okay, okay" Patton said, "it is getting pretty boring...hmmmm....HMMM.." he thought dramatically, "I mean, it's getting pretty late. Maybe we could just go in my room and turn the lights out and goof off or something while we wait to fall asleep?"

"Yeah, sure. Sounds chill—"

"Ooh, I know!" Remus exclaimed quickly, interrupting Virgil, "um—uh, how about we bake something? Yeah!"

Virgil raised a brow, "us? Bake? Yeah right, you probably just want to set something on fire or poison us."

"I can do both of those" Remus compromised, waving a dismissive hand, "though I suppose I can save it for another day."

"Alright, what should we bake then?" Patton asked, grabbing a family recipe book, "wanna keep it simple? My mom has some great chocolate chip cookie recipes!"

Remus snatched it from Patton and flipped through the book, trying to find something that would take longer than cookies to make. He hummed as he looked, before flipping over to a chocolate cupcake recipe. Yeah, that took a little longer.

"How about this?" Remus asked, showing it to them.

"Yes. Absolutely" Virgil said seriously.

Patton giggled, "looks like someone's got a sweet tooth!"

"Da—rn right" He said, catching himself when Patton gave him the look, "I was going to say darn, your look made me second guess myself!"

"Mhm, Sure" Patton chuckled as he got out a stick of butter and a pan, "are we just melting it or are we browning it?"

"This book is so specific" Virgil scoffed, reading over Remus's shoulder, squinting at the book, "it says to brown it until it's just slightly over golden. Why does it matter? Basically it wants it to be brown, but none of the little specks that usually reside at the bottom of the pan? Wait—how is that even possible?"

"Oh, okay...so I guess as soon as it foams up i'll take it off the heat? I'm sure we'll smell it? Browned butter usually has a nutty aroma."

"Alright then..ooh, take another stick of butter out it needs to soften for the frosting" Virgil said, "Remus go get the dry ingredients. Patton's going to cook the butter because I don't trust you or myself. I'll get the sugar, milk sour cream and eggs..."

"Don't forget the vanilla" Patton commented from where he stood, melting the butter.

"Oh yeah" Virgil said, opening a cabinet and grabbing it.

By the time the butter was done browning, all the ingredients were out and on the counter, arranged based on when they'd need them.

"Okay! Butter needs to cool, let's measure out and sift the dry ingredients!" Patton exclaimed.

"Wait did you preheat the oven?" Virgil asked.

Paton slapped his forehead, "oh! No I didn't, silly me!"

Remus sighed. Of course Virgil would remember that. That would have given them like—twenty more minutes if they waited until the end!

Patton measured out the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt. He whisked them together in a small bowl and set it aside.

They waited around for the butter to cool, and when it did Patton poured it into a large bowl along with some white and brown sugar, "i'm no coward, let's whisk it by hand!"

"Okay, sounds good. Whisk the butter and sugar for two minutes" Virgil read.

He mixed it until a paste formed, and then they added the vanilla, sour cream and eggs, and Remus insisted that it was his turn to mix. They were pleasantly surprised when Remus actually did it right.

"Alternate between milk and dry ingredients. Always start and end with your dry ingredients, in about three portions" Virgil read aloud.

"Okay, let's do this!" Patton exclaimed.

————————————————————

"Hm...." Patton said, "did we do something wrong? The batter is still a little thicker than the pictures."

"We need to add the hot coffee" Virgil commented, "it blooms the cocoa and adds a richer flavor" he read from the book.

"Oh! But I don't have any coffee" Patton said.

"Then we can just boil milk or water or something. Remus, go do that while we prepare the cupcake pans."

"Okay!" Remus exclaimed.

————————————————————

By the time they finished with that and portioned out all of the batter, the oven beeped loudly, signifying that it was done preheating, "just in time!" Patton chirped, putting them in and sighing, "that was fun!"

"Now what?" Remus asked.

"Now we decide: do we want to make a ganache or a frosting?" Virgil asked, "or do we want to go all out in decorating and do both?"

"I don't think that even Patton has enough butter in the world to do all that" Remus commented, "how about we make a buttercream cheese frosting?"

"Oh yeah! Okay so we need powdered sugar, cocoa powder, milk, soft butter and cold cream cheese..and Vanilla. Okay we have all that. Let's get cooking!" Patton exclaimed.

————————————————————

Twenty minutes later, the cupcakes were done and the frosting was finished.

"What do we do while they're cooling?" Patton questioned.

"How about we just call it a night and finish tomorrow?" Virgil yawned, "i'm pooped."

"Yeah. It's pretty late" Patton shrugged.

"How about we paint our nails?" Remus asked after a moment of scanning his brain for solutions.

"Hm. I do need a touch up. And the cupcakes should be cooled by the time we're done. Alright" Virgil said, "let's see who can do it without making the biggest mess."

————————————————————

Remus made the biggest mess.

By the time he was done, there was green and black nail polish all over his fingers and Virgil had to clean it up for him.

"Beautiful" Remus commented when he finished.

"Yeah, no thanks to you" Virgil scoffed, "now let's go frost those cupcakes so we can go go bed."

"Yeah, i'm so tired right now" Patton said, "it's almost two am! Who knew that baking could take up so much time!"

"I did. I read the recipe book three times because I was afraid we'd miss something" Virgil said as they made their way to the kitchen. He felt a cupcake, "cool to the touch. Remus get the frosting from the fridge."

Remus quickly obeyed and brought it over. They put the frosting into some piping bags and Patton showed them different tips to use and how to make some pretty designs.

They frosted twenty four cupcakes, and between them all, Patton's were the only ones that actually had flawless designs. But it didn't have to look good to eat, so Virgil picked one up and took a bite.

"Oh my gosh that was so worth it" Virgil moaned between bites, "this is heavenly."

Patton giggled, taking one for himself, "family recipes for the win."

————————————————————

"How about we do something else?!" Remus asked desperately when Virgil commented about going to sleep.

"Remus" Patton whined, "whyyyyy you're being ridiculous! You can't possibly not be sleepy!"

"I'm wide awake" Remus argued.

"Nope. We are going to bed" Virgil countered, putting his foot down, "come on, let's go."

Remus huffed, walking into Patton's room with both of them. He gulped quietly, shrinking in on himself as he got on his little makeshift bed on the floor alongside Virgil and Patton, who insisted on sleeping on the floor if they were going to.

Virgil turned out the lights soon enough, and Remus squeezed his eyes shut as his mind filled with intrusive thoughts.

'There's something in here and it's going to kill you and your friends. It's going to slowly torture all of you until your screaming and begging for mercy.'

His body shook in fear. He couldn't see anything. It was dark. It was quiet. It was terrifying. He quickly pulled his blanket over his head and fumbled with his phone for a minute before turning on the flashlight. He sighed in relief, breathing heavily as the light flooded the small space under his covers.

Patton and Virgil were still talking. They were giggling and goofing off like a couple of teenage girls. He didn't understand why the light had to be ofd for this..they could've turned on some lame flick, put the volume on low and then talked to their hearts content, but noooo it had to be pitch black.

He stared, eyes round and wide up at the top of his well lit blanket. His heart beat slowed down as his breathing finally evened. He listened to the quiet voices of Patton and Virgil, who were talking about crushes. He was okay. They were okay. It was fine. He could see.

..But what was outside of the blanket?

He curled in on himself tighter and whimpered, screwing his eyes shut. No. It was okay. He could hear Patton and Virgil talking. They were fine, he was fine, everything was fine.

Nothing was happening. It would all be okay. He held his phone close to his chest and closed his eyes, finally allowing himself to relax.

Just focus on their voices.

Focus on the light.

You are okay.

————————————————————

It was about two hours later when Remus's eyes shot back open. It was dark. He must've moved sometime during the night—Where was his phone?! Where was his phone?!

He used his hands to feel around, finally grabbing it and turning his flashlight back on. He sighed in relief when the light flooded the room. He went under his blanket again and sighed, feeling his heart pounding heavily in his chest.

When he finally managed to calm himself down, he realized there was just one nagging problem.

He had forgotten to use the bathroom before bed. Ugh, because of course he did! How could he be so stupid? He mumbled curses as he bit his lip. He wasn't sure if he could hold it all night. He hadn't used the bathroom since before he got to Patton's house, and that was hours upon hours ago.

He contemplated what to do, running through solutions in his mind. He could just throw off the blanket, turn his phone brightness up, and run like a madman towards the bathroom. He would be so quick...so quick, and flip that switch, that he wouldn't even notice that it had ever been dark.

His heart began to pound faster at the notion of leaving the comfort of his little illuminated space. He ran through a bunch of other possibilities in his mind, though eventually he decided to just hold it, though that proved to be more difficult than he thought it would be.

He laid there for a while, just staring straight(gay) as the uncomfortable weight in his bladder festered and settled, announcing its presence and being firmly aggressive in the fact that the feeling was not going away anytime soon.

He pressed his lips together, jaw locking as he slowly removed himself from the covers. He heard a loud creak as he shifted, and quickly threw the blanket back over his head, squeezing his eyes shut tightly. Hell no.

He whimpered and pulled his knees up to his chest, holding the light to his chest protectively as he came out again.
The first time was hard, but the second time was a little easier.(🏳️‍🌈)

He poked his head into the room's darkness, and his flashlight quickly followed as he sat up.

How was he going to get to the bathroom when he was too scared to even stand up?

An idea crossed his mind as he heard a sleepy mumble coming from Patton. He felt really embarrassed to be waking him up for this, but he really had to go, and he was sure that Patton would rather be woken up to accompany him than have to deal with Remus when he pissed himself, so there was that.

He reached over desperately and shook Patton on his shoulder, "Patton" he whispered, fear forcing his voice into nothing more than a small squeak, "Patton!" He whispered with more urgency. The longer he was out from under the safety of his blanket, the more paranoid he got. His eyes constantly scanned over the room as he waited for Patton to stir.

"Mph, mom...no, ten more minutes please" Patton mumbled, squinting his eyes at Remus's light, covering his face and pulling the covers over his head, "Remus?" He uttered, poking his head back out, "What do you want?"

He opened his mouth to ask Patton to come to the bathroom with him, but felt a little silly now that he was thinking about it. What would Patton think? "I need..I need to go to the bathroom" he whispered meekly.

"You know where it is" Patton said, rolling over and closing his eyes again.

"No..I-I need you to come with me" Remus stressed, shaking Patton awake, "please?" He begged.

"Mph—okay okay..imm up, I promise..let's go" he said, rubbing the grogginess from his eyes and getting up. He placed his glasses on his face, "come on, let's go."

Remus held his light up and clinged to Patton's arm, their bodies close. He had a death grip on Patton's arm, his legs shaky as the bedroom door was opened and they entered the very dark, very squeaky hallway.

Remus whimpered, holding Patton impossibly tighter as they went. He gulped as they passed something and jumped, "what is that?!?"

He pointed the flashlight in the direction he was yelling in and Patton just sighed, "Remus..stop playing around i'm tired! It's just a plant!"

"O-oh, okay—WHAT'S THAT?!"

"Remus!" Patton chastised.

"Sorry! S-sorry, sorry" Remus blurted out, "i'm a little, a little jumpy...." He glanced around worriedly as they continued to walk, much too slow for his heavy bladder.

Patton sighed again, "okay we're almost the—"

CRASH

Remus screamed in terror as he heard something behind them slam into the floor and break. He whipped around and stared at what had happened with wide eyes. Patton gasped, waking up at the loud noise, "what happened?!"

Suddenly, the light switch flipped on, revealing Virgil, and a knocked over pot. Just as he was about to apologize (with much profanity)his words caught in his mouth when he caught sight of Remus.

As soon as he heard the crash, the shock was too much for him, and he began to heavily wet himself. His pj bottoms were turning a dark, glistening shade as the piss ran down his legs and soaked into his pajama bottoms.

Virgil watched in shock, and once Patton heard small sniffles coming from Remus he turned around. Remus still had a death grip on his arm, and was biting his lip harshly in an attempt to not cry. He noticed his rapidly darkening sweatpants and the pools of piss dripping onto the floor, and let out a gasp.

Remus's grip on his arm only tightened as he let out a choked sob, and Patton felt terrible. Remus really wasn't kidding when he said he had to go.

"Remus" Patton murmured gently, taking his trembling hand, "hey, calm down, it's okay-"

Remus jumped away from him, finally releasing his arm as he yelped, "i'm so sorry!"

Virgil was in shock for multiple reasons. Not entirely because Remus was wetting himself, no, it wasn't out of character for him to do it just for funsies or to spite someone. But this was genuine embarrassment. He was crying and shaking. And he said he was sorry. Remus never said sorry.

Virgil looked desperately at Patton for help, because he had no idea what he could say to help.

"Hey, Remus..." Patton said, trying to catch his attention, "hey, it's okay. How about you just go...and get cleaned up, yeah? Shower, or just..wipe up or something, alright?"

Remus covered his face and nodded, running to the bathroom.

————————————————————

Remus stared in the mirror. His face was red and blotchy, and so were his eyes. He rubbed them furiously, trying to get rid of all the remaining tears. He couldn't help but feel embarrassed. He wet himself because he was afraid. This would just prove how much braver his stupid brother was!

Just how pathetic does this make him? To wet his pants over the dark. He was never going to hear the end of this. He just knew that Virgil was going to tease him, and tell everyone. And Patton was going to make stupid jokes.

He wipes his eyes once more before exiting the bathroom to find that the hallway lights were on. He saw that the mess from his accident had been cleaned up as well.

Slowly, he shuffled his way to the family room, where Patton and Virgil were talking quietly to each other on the couch. As soon as he entered the room, they both closed their mouths and stared at him.

Patton patted a spot between him and Virgil on the couch, and he awkwardly sat down.

"So...what happened?" Virgil asked bluntly, cutting to the chase.

"Uh...I pissed myself, what do you mean?" Remus asked.

Virgil rolled his eyes, punching his shoulder, "no dumbass, I meant why."

"Virgil" Patton whispered harshly.

"I had to pee, that's why" he grumbled, "can we just—just drop it?"

"Is this why you never want to come?" Patton asked, "do you...have accidents every night?"

"No!" Remus exclaimed, "no, I just...I'm...i'm..." he huffed, "i'm afraidofthedark" he mumbled.

"What?" Patton asked, I didn't hear you."

"I'm afraid of the dark!" He exclaimed, groaning and shoving his hands in his face, "okay? I'm afraid of the dark and I needed to pee but I was scared so I woke up Patton and then you crashed into the plant and I thought—well, I don't know what I thought but it scared me! So you guys can go ahead and make fun of me and laugh—"

"I'm sorry Remus" Virgil frowned.

"You—I—What?" He asked.

"I'm sorry...i'm sorry for scaring you. And making you feel like you couldn't tell us you were afraid" Virgil frowned.

Remus looked down, "I just..thought you'd make fun of me.."

"Remus, i'd never make fun of you for something you're truly upset over" Virgil mumbled, "i'm sorry if I made it seem like I would."

"Awe" Patton squealed, "I love when my boys get along!"

Virgil glared at him, before folding his arms and looking away, "yeah, well, Roman would kill me if I made him upset anyways, so.."

Remus snorted, "yeah right. Roman would laugh his ass off if he knew that I pissed myself and that I cried."

"Despite how he acts..he really does care for you, Remus" Virgil said sincerely, "you're brothers."

"I don't want to hear it from someone else..I want to hear it from him" he forced the emotions out of his voice, coughing to pretend he didn't just have the most humiliating voice crack ever, "it doesn't matter. I just...look, bottom line is, i've been afraid of the dark since I was small. I sleep with night lights. Oh, and sorry for pissing on the floor."

"No big deal!" Patton chirped, "oh! And about night lights, I have some, if you'd like me to plug one in."

Remus nodded, "I mean if it's okay."

Patton beamed, "totally! I have a hulk one, so it'll make the light green—"

"What are we waiting for?" Remus gasped, let's go!"

———————-/////——————— aaa—

They ended up falling asleep together in a bundle on the floor, the closet light on and a Hulk night light plugged in. Remus fell asleep peacefully after a few minutes of talking.

He attended many more sleepovers with them after that. It just became second nature to plug a night light in before going to sleep. Virgil liked the night lights, they were calming. Patton was also a fan, so Remus didn't even have to worry about keeping them up with it.

It became a running joke to ask him if he used the bathroom before bed though, but he didn't mind. It actually helped remind him to use it, because he wasn't a stranger to forgetting, and then waking up in the morning and having to fight Roman before he got to his skincare routine for the bathroom.

A/n: I wrote the whole baking section of this because when I wrote that part I wanted to bake something but I didn't have any gosh diddly darn butter to use so I was kind of going crazy.

Also, like I said before, i'm probably going to have a weird update schedule because it's marching season, which means long practices, football games and after a while, weekend competitions, falling asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow, etc. (Band eats up all my time lol)

Concert season will be much better for updates, promise! :) Don't worry to all those who already requested stuff, I didn't forget about you, you're all in my drafts waiting to be written.🤭🤭🤭
