The Beings of Fire
In the beginning, there was always the djinn. The djinn (or genies) are spirits of fire and smoke, birth from the element that gave them life. They were born in the hot deserts of the world and around them tales about these beings began to stir amongst us.
The djinn is known to be malevolent by some sources while others believed they were benevolent, in truth they are both because, like humans, they can make the decisions to be either good or evil. Djinn, by most sources, are known to be tricksters who enjoy nothing more than causing problems.
These spirits possess unique forms, some djinn choose animal forms while some choose to be in a humanoid form. Some choose to be a large column of smoke to be awe and grand as well as to frighten mortals that stumble across djinn.
Djinn possess great magical abilities that make them different than other supernatural beings, some individuals would often use a djinn's power for their personal gains or for another purpose entirely. Since djinns are believed to be natural tricksters they possess the ability to create illusions and change their forms into a human or animal, these spirits also possess the ability to manipulate fire and manipulate the sand of the desert they are in. Amongst these abilities djinn possess the ability to enter the sleeping mind of a human so they can walk into dreams with also the capability to change any parts of a human's dream, there are other numerous magical abilities a djinn possesses but they are mysterious and the spirits of fire choose to keep these unknown abilities hidden from humans.
Magicians and sages, from countries like Egypt and Arabia, have dealt with djinn according to the stories told today. From the stories magicians and sages would trap a misbehaving or evil djinn in an object, sometimes a bottle or lamp, then seal the object before hiding it from other people so they would not be harmed or manipulated by the imprisoned djinn. When one of these imprisoned djinns are found it is usually by an orphan, merchant, or a hermit with them not knowing of the spirit in the object they possess. Curiosity takes the better of these individuals and they free the djinn, once freed these spirits will grant the deepest desires of the individual that freed a djinn but some that have been imprisoned longer than a certain time period would choose to cause harm to the holder of the magic object that freed the imprisoned djinn.
The individuals that freed one of these malevolent djinns would trick the djinn, apparently, there are many ways to trick a djinn by multiple sources like A Thousand and One Nights, back into the magic item they were freed from. Once back in the lamp or bottle, the evil genie (djinn) would be furious and try to escape but the individual that originally freed it would get rid of the djinn by throwing the magic item in the sea or hide it in some part of the desert to never see that particular djinn again.
Magicians, in some tales, use djinn for magical services. King Solomon was a master magician who deployed djinn (some sources say demons he did this with) to build his temple and the spirits would obey him because of his magic ring, stories say whoever possesses this ring could summon and command the spirits Solomon controlled.
This is the story of the djinn, the trickster spirits and beings of fire, which are one of the numerous fantasy creatures that shaped an author's way to tell stories.
