Chapter Three: Questions
"Keep going," Elaine said. "You are doing great. What happened next? You were in the hall by the administrative offices."
He opened his eyes. Her peaceful face contrasted with Chandler's icy stare. The man looked like death's shadow.
"What did you do next, Wayne?" Elaine asked, gently regaining his attention.
"I woke up in the cafeteria. Sitting at one the little round tables."
She shook her head. "You didn't go to sleep, and you didn't wake up. You were awake the whole time. You were in a hallway by some offices, on your way to the cafeteria where your daughter Sarah works. What did you see in those offices as you walked by? Were they empty? Did you see anyone?"
He closed his eyes again. He was back in the hall.
"You're right. I remember. I kept walking. The air felt different; I think it was the sand. I know it's only in my head, but it felt real. I thought... I thought I could...." He shook his head.
"Tell me everything, Wayne. Anything you saw, felt, or thought will help, even if you think think it's not important.
"Alright. Two women sat at facing each other across a desk in the office on the right. Something was wrong with them. The one facing me didn't move at all. Her eyes were glassy, half shut. She was drooling. I thought about calling for help. I don't know what I was thinking, but it just didn't seem important to me. Dmitri was coming, too, and I had to go."
"How did you know Dmitri was coming for you?"
The question confused him. He opened his mouth to speak, but he didn't know the answer. "I don't know. I guess I figured it out. He followed me from the HR meeting, so he must have been making sure I didn't cause trouble on my way out."
"So you went to the cafeteria. Did you see anyone behaving suspiciously?" Elaine asked.
"Yes. I saw Dmitri when I left the offices. I came through the door and turned left towards the cafeteria, and he was behind me. He followed me into the dining room. I didn't want to disturb Sarah, so I sat down at a table just as the guy sitting there stood to leave. Dmitri walked right by me, up to Sarah's register. They said a few words. He stood a few paces away by the exit, watching me. I felt really tired and put my head down on the table. That's when the sand fell. The air felt normal again, and... and I panicked."
