[9] Murky Skies
"Gloomy when alone
But when we are together
Comfort we rest in."
I failed that test from last week, but my overall grades weren't terrible enough to put me in remedial. They almost are.
Did I mention that I had taken remedial in a whole other subject though? I ended up not being able to see Haiku ever since the picnic, good thing I can talk to her on Discord now.
Now, trudging to the narra tree looking like a witch after I fell asleep at school for the entire afternoon, I quite match the cloudiness of the sky today. My classmates didn't wake me up, they just took photos of the Dora looking girl with drool running down her mouth. Fun.
"Looks like someone had a tough day." Haiku-always-beaming lady comments. I bet she still looks like an angel even when she wakes up or has an ugly cry session.
"It seems the lack of sleep caught up to me while I was at school." I reply.
A quick recollection of last night.
Haiku and I call, and chat, and somewhere around one in the morning she wanted to watch this movie with me. Uhm, long titles, what was it called again? Words bubble up like soda pop. The guy character liked making haikus too, it was a cute movie.
And after that, for around half an hour Haiku was rambling on her thoughts about the movie.
"Come here, you can rest on my lap again!" she pats her thighs.
Sparing less embarrassment than the first time, upon coming up to her I lay down and rest my head on her lap. We were like this the first, and currently only time she said my name.
"Hey Salmon, what are your favorite desserts?" Haiku asks. When she bends over, strands of her brown hair brush my face. I am tempted to sarcastically ask her if she's trying to feed me her hair.
"Brownies, I guess. And yours?"
"Cupcakes!"
"You sound like you want to go out and buy sweets."
"Hehe, yeah."
And I'm not broke today. I can treat her without breaking a cold sweet.
"Not today though, you look tired. Rest." She continues.
"Ah, I'm not too tired."
"Reeeest."
I sigh. If she insists. At least I can start saving up to treat her more.
Taking one short glance at the clouds which were even darker than earlier, I shut my eyes. Yet I can't sleep peacefully when it looks like it is about to rain.
"The sky is a murky color. I bet my parents are fighting again." Haiku murmurs.
After a while, I feel water droplets hit my skin. At first it seemed to be drizzling, but in barely half a minute the rain turned violent, and I jolted up from my sleep.
"We're going to get soaked by the time we reach shade!" My girlfriend exclaims. How weird of me to refer to her as that all of a sudden.
Yes, my girlfriend and I ran in the rain, I almost trip. After my short-lived nap, although the sudden water droplets work up my spirit, my body remains groggy.
My field of vision wasn't helping. Droplets stuck to my glasses, warping my sight. We come to a stop by a lamp post, standing outside in the shade of a building. Both of us were panting as if we climbed a whole mountain.
"Not athletic are you?" I chuckle weakly in between breaths.
"You don't seem to be the athletic type either."
My school uniform is a menace to rain. From the white top with a thin fabric, wet socks stuck to my skin and a drenched skirt, I am cold and uncomfortable and probably going to have colds tomorrow.
And today Haiku wears a black t-shirt, shorts, and slippers.
"Do you think we should head back to our homes for now?" She asks.
"I think we should wait for the rain to calm down first."
"Oh, right."
She can be silly sometimes.
When the rain finally came to a stop, we both parted ways from there. Now with every time I come to see that lamp post, I'll be reminded of this strange, fun little memory.
The next day, I end up having colds, while also feeling feverish. My weekend was spent laying in my bed being cared for by my mom. I ended up missing a day of class too.
