[5] Diaphanous Lenses
"Bespectacled you
Captivating simple me
Cherish you I will."
I didn't enjoy the extra attention wearing glasses for the first time brought me. The lenses of the spectacles were dirtied because of my overly curious classmates' filthy hands, and the fabric of my school uniform was no good in cleaning them.
So just like that, my glasses rested on my tiny nose bridge.
"Heeyy." I greet miss Haiku unenthusiastically, taking my seat beside her. But lady here is too busy enjoying the song she's listening to on her white earphones to notice me.
"And I could be a pretty girl, I'll wear a skirt for you..." She hums.
You are though. Anyone who says otherwise is just jealous.
"Hold up you listen to Clairo?" I unintentionally raise my voice and she turns to me in surprise.
"Salmon! When did you get here? Did you hear me singing?"
"Just a bit, I got here a moment ago."
"Oh and you got glasses too! They look good on you, hehe."
I feel my heart skip a beat. As if the last time we were together wasn't enough, now I'll have a terrible, maybe impossible time getting her out of my head.
And I'll just pretend I never went to wikihow to search about the signs of me having a crush.
"There you go again seducing me!" I blurt out. Taken aback by my own words my heart starts racing.
"S-seducing you?" Haiku too, is taken aback. "I was just saying the glasses suit you... It's true!" her earphones fall out and I can hear the music faintly.
"Seducing? I uh said, secluding! You're secluding me again." That was a horrible save. Idiot self.
"That isn't what you said, you said seducing. I heard you clearly! And how would I be secluding you?"
I gaze at the few long grasses poking at my skin through my thin knee-high white socks, unable to respond.
"So, do you listen to Clairo too?" She asks me.
"Sometimes."
"Ah."
An awkward silence muddles my ability to think correctly. Maybe because it isn't just silence, there's tension.
"Just so you know, I'm really serious with what I said earlier. I think girls with glasses are cute." She moves her hand to the ground, close by mine.
"Thanks. People kept telling me it made me look weird and nerdy."
"Are you a nerd though?"
"Oh nah. My grades are perfectly average. Not Saiki K average though, just normal person normal."
"That's one way to explain it." She giggles.
Even the way she laughs is starting to make me feel things.
Toooo dangerous.
"You know, this gave me an idea for today's haiku!"
I watch her bring out the smaller notebook. When she flips it to a new page, she pauses to think and count the syllables of the words.
Now, I'm beginning to feel like I'm glad that I got glasses. That it doesn't matter that other people say I look weird.
Haiku thinks I look good in them.
I'll just pretend that I'm not going to seriously take advice from wikihow and search on the signs someone likes me back.
I'm not down that bad. Definitely not!
I glance over at her and catch her staring at me intently.
"Uhm."
"Yeah, I know what to write now! I'll show you all of these sometime Salmon. Just not now."
