[10] Name For The Unknown
"I am the nameless
Find me where you hear me call
Counting up to ten."
Tuesday, I'm well enough to come to school, but as lousy as ever. My friend is babbling about yesterday and whatever school drama I missed.
I admit, the tea is good when it's hot but there are times I'm too mentally absent to listen. A cockroach once perched on my shoulder and despite the noises of others freaking out, I didn't notice.
It flew out the classroom afterwards. I'm still disgusted to think Antonio dared rest its creepy looking self on me. I don't know if it's just me or do people enjoy calling a cockroach Antonio?
"Lilena are you listening?" My friend asks.
"No, I was thinking of cockroaches."
My friend shakes their head, a look of dismay crossing their face. "Who spaces out to think of cockroaches?"
"There's one over there." I point at the wall close to them and watch as they yelp, take a few steps backwards and start flailing their arms like a magikarp out of water. There was really none.
"Lilena!" They scowl at me after realizing I was just messing with them.
"Sorry." A snort follows my apology.
Since it's still our break time, my friend and I just spend a few minutes walking around the campus. Our destination-less trip somehow leads us outside, but still in the school and I hear the faint whisper of the word salmon.
I want to think it's just my subconscious and cravings but I swear I hear a familiar voice nearby.
"Salmon, saaalmon!"
I swiftly turn my head and see light brown hair peeking out from behind a bush. Haiku?
"What are you doing here?" I gasp in a low voice and she comes out of hiding, waving awkwardly.
"Weeell I just wanted to visit your school, 'cause you know. Hehe." She waves awkwardly.
She was within school grounds; did she sneak in?
"Who is this?" My friend asks.
I look at them, and my girlfriend. Do I tell my friend that this is my girlfriend? What if I said friend only and it makes her sad? Tough decisions, but I don't want to take that risk.
"My girlfriend."
My heart is racing, nervous to see how my friend would respond.
"The name is Jane. Nice to meet you!" Haiku introduces herself.
Jane? Is that her name? Or is she using Jane as in Jane Doe.
"O-oh! Nice to meet you Jane." My friend too, introduces. But quite shyly.
"She's the crush I was telling you about before, and now we're... Dating."
"Aww our love indifferent Lilena ended up finding a lover even before I did. Congrats though."
"Thanks. Can I talk to Jane for a moment?"
I gently grab Haiku's wrist and pull her to a place we can talk without being overheard by others.
"Okay, where do I start. How did you get in here, and is Jane your actual name?"
"Maybe it is, maybe it isn't."
I place my hands on my hips.
"No, I was referencing Jane Doe." She frowned at me.
It was a genuine question ok, I can't go with your playfulness all the time.
"And how you managed to enter the school?"
"I just told the guard I was a student here and left my uniform somewhere in the school. Oh but I'll be leaving soon, I just wanted to see what your school was like."
I feel like I might've been to aggressive with her just now. The excitement she had earlier has dwindled.
"You don't have to leave so soon..."
I am bad at cheering people up. Proof? When I try to calm a crying baby it only gets worst. Same with children.
"No it's fine. I don't want to get you in trouble." She leans in and kisses my cheek before rushing off. The shock had me paralyzed, unable to say a word after that.
I could've at least walked with her till she was outside of the school.
"Lilena? Please don't be spacing out again. I'm not excited to hear whatever weird thing you have on your mind this time." My friend places their hand on my shoulder.
