Chapter Twenty One
Finished all of part one! There are only 2 more chapters left. I haven't started writing part 2, I will soon, but I was wondering what you would like or expect to see in the next part with the original HP characters?
Chapter Twenty One
Weeks passed. The end of February was nearing and we now were constantly busy with apparition lessons. Selina got away with using Icorany, and it was all thanks to me. I had to lie to protect her secret in order for her to keep mine. She remained in the hospital for the rest of that weekend and I visited her to explain what happened exactly. When she woke up she was terrified. Selina didn't remember much from that night, she said it was practically a blur. Hopefully this near death experience will get her to stop. It would be tough stopping because of withdrawals. She looked rough even after a full days away from Icorany, but hopefully it was a wake up call.
"Before you go," Selina called as I turned to leave. "How did Cole find out about this?"
"When Charlie and I brought you to the infirmary we ran into him," I told her. "If you died, it would have been half of his fault." His fault for getting her into Icorany and her fault for being stupid enough to use it.
"He told me he wasn't supplying me anymore," Selina whispered lowly. "So I guess you have nothing to worry about then." Wow. Maybe Cole did realize that what he was doing was wrong. So deep down, he did have emotions in there somewhere. I nodded before I left. That was good to hear.
After that, she returned to classes as if nothing happened. I noticed things between her and Cole seemed tense. They weren't as attached to each other as they used to be. Actually it more like Selina wasn't attached to him anymore. In class or in the hallway he would go over to her, but somehow she would slip away. Thea and Nelly weren't even around her as much. Selina was alone. She did make Charlie's day though when she thanked him for helping her.
Apart from that we began our Apparition lessons as it reached mid-February. Kent was a lifesaver when it came to apparition tips because it was harder than I imagined. Colin splinched in our second lesson so Idella was always with him at the hospital. Charlie was very busy with Quidditch practice because he wanted to be captain next year. Most of my time was spent with Kent. After the fire incident in front of Grant, we avoided him at all costs. He continued pestering me about it for weeks after. He would call me a freak and say that he knew what he saw. Luckily no one believed him since he was obsessively drinking that night.
As time passed and classes got harder, the thought of my father still didn't leave my mind. I wrote to him once but got no response. Idella and I investigated Lucius Malfoy a bit more but couldn't find much. They kept information like that rather secretive. It was clear Lucius Malfoy was a Death Eater and friends with Cal, but that was all we knew. We couldn't find anything going on at the Ministry. Whatever was happening, it was being kept very secretive. Idella once suggested experimenting with my 'fire-proof' ability. Without me knowing, she researched history on fire magic and wanted to try a few things. When our dorm was for once empty, we decided to try a few things out.
"Well it's clear fire has no effect on you, but the question is, is that all? Can you control it in any way?" she asked. "Let's start with Incendio. Try it nonverbally." I tried it and at first it didn't work, but I felt something. Without thinking I lifted my hand up so that my palm was flat and facing the ceiling. Two more tries later and an actual spark formed, it didn't last long but it formed. As I kept trying it I managed to create a ball of flames, but it took a lot of energy out of me.
"How interesting," I said to Idella.
"I know," she replied. "Imagine what you'll be able to do after a lot of practice." I nodded amazed. If I could learn to do that in a day, then who knows what I would be able to do in a week. The next day, I improved when showing it to Charlie. The day after I showed it to Kent and now I was able to make the flames last longer. At first he was fascinated, but then it turned into worry. He didn't want anyone to find out about this. Once again, I promised this time that no one would find out. This time I would make sure of that.
In Care of Magical Creatures, Selina was showing up but couldn't focus due to her withdrawal headaches. Cole still tried walking over to her, but she didn't seem too interested in him anymore. "Don't you have a remedy for her headaches to go away completely?" I asked him smartly as Selina excused herself to go to the bathroom. If he had the cure to end the addiction, why hasn't he given it to her?
"She won't take the remedy," Cole snapped back at me in a whisper seeming concerned. "The one I told you about."
"Really?" I asked confused. After a near death experience, I'm pretty sure she would want a cure to the addiction right away and end it. "So she's going to suffer these migraines instead?" Cole shrugged and mentioned something about trying to slip it into her drink later. Selina continued looking rough the next day and then she didn't show up to class on a Friday. Surprisingly Cole was there and noticed as well. Maybe the headaches were too hard for her to handle that she had to stay in her room. It would take a few weeks for them to go away.
"She's been avoiding me. She won't take the remedy and stays in her room.. I don't know what's going on," Cole whispered as he passed by me. He never actually stopped to fully talk to me. I wonder what was up with her. Icorany was dangerous for a reason. Maybe it was still in her system and causing her to not want a cure to the addiction. But how was Cole and all of his friends fine?
A week later the snow finally stopped, so everyone went outside to enjoy a clear sky even though it was still beyond freezing. A mix of fifth to seventh years sat down by the rocks to watch the waves. Annabelle was there with her boyfriend and asked me where Idella was, so I told her about Colin. "Look what I got!" a fifth year Agrethance boy said running down the hill, waving a copy of the UK Daily Prophet. Everyone ran over to him including Kent and I. It was the most recent copy.
"How did you get it?" Annabelle asked him leaning over to look. There was about twenty students all trying to read it.
"You'll all get your turn!" the boy said. "My older brother sent it, he disguised it with a charm to get it through the mail! Apparently the mail over there is being watched." It sucked being so short. I was standing on the very tips of my toes and still could barely see over the average height students in front of me. Kent was behind me and peered over my shoulder. He was lucky he was tall. I turned around, about to ask to go on his back when I watched his face fall into horror.
"Thats her," he muttered in a low tone. Looking through a gap I saw a picture that read 'Bellatrix Lestrange'. She was one who escaped a year ago from Azkaban in a similar, yet minor, version of what happened recently. A wild haired woman was smiling darkly on the front page.
"What do you mean?" I asked Kent.
"There's something I have been meaning to tell you..." he whispered. "Let's go over here." We stepped away from the crowd. I made a mental note to bother that Agrethance boy later to read the copy, but first I needed to hear what Kent had to say. He seemed bothered and I had no idea why.
We walked about a mile away towards the loud shore as the waves crashed around us. He leaned up against the rock and I pulled myself up on it to sit down. "What did you want to tell me?" I asked him impatient.
"I lied..." he said.
"About what?" I responded confused.
"My winter break. It wasn't as uneventful as I told you. We were contacted." My eyes widened and I couldn't resist a gasp. How could he not mention that?
"Everything was fine!" He replied quickly. "But they found us. So we moved..." I stared at him. He didn't think to mention any of this to me? "No one came to the house, we just got letters. Letters from that woman, Bellatrix Lestrange." His face darkened.
"Why her?" I asked, still not forgetting about the fact he never mentioned any of this.
"Well...because we're related." Kent looked away with an ashamed look on his face. I didn't know what to say. How could he forget to mention this to me? The Lestrange family was known as one of the darkest families in the Wizarding world. Even here in the USA! "It's a long story. My mother was born into the Lestrange family, Lana Lestrange, which is why I'm assuming she married my father in the first place. But from what my Grandfather told me, she didn't believe in what they were doing and never complied with the Death Eaters. Right after Nephele was born...she disappeared." What Kent was trying to say was that deep down he knew the Death Eaters killed his mother for not siding with them. "The Lestrange family knows that her children are still alive and tried contacting us through my Grandfather. He panicked and moved us to a muggle area this winter." I sat there speechless for a second. Bellatrix was by far one of the most dangerous witches of all time.
"And you didn't tell me any of this?" I repeated panicked. "You're not safe! You're in danger. You need to be careful."
"Because I knew you would freak out," Kent said and tried to put on a sympathetic smile. Even he knew this was not a safe situation. "Please don't worry. My Grandfather has had this backup plan since we came to the U.S. You have nothing to worry about. If anything, I'm more worried about you." I shook my head, this was definitely not a topic I was going to drop but for now I wasn't going to push him.
"Grant won't stop telling people what he 'saw'," I responded knowing what he meant. Even though no one else seemed to believe Grant, he wouldn't drop the subject. Kent even caught him with a few books on magical flames near his bed the other night. "But you don't have to worry about me," I said with an amused smirk since we both seemed so concerned with one another's problems rather than our own. "No one believes him and I have it completely under control." Kent smiled and nodded before leaning in to kiss me.
