Demi

Once I walked out of the room both the prosecutor and the defense attorney practically ran up to me.

"Well?"

I cleared my throat. "In my professional opinion, Jerry Saunders is not criminally insane, and is mentally competent to stand trial." The defense attorney's mouth dropped while the prosecutor smiled gleefully.

"That's preposterous!" One of Saunders' lawyers challenged. "You're bias!"

I glared at him. "I am simps using facts that I've gathered."

He shook his head angrily. "I'll see you in the courtroom."

"Oh, I'm not testifying."

"What?" He practically yelled, his face getting redder and shinier by the moment.

"I'll be submitting a written statement directly to the judge presiding over the case." I said, standing my ground. "Now if you'll excuse me, I have a hospital to run. Please take Miss Saunders and respectfully, get out."

By the time I got out of work, it was late; nearly ten o'clock. I had a couple of missed calls from Wilmer, so as soon as I got to my car I dialed his number.

"Demi? Thank God. Where are you?"

I rubbed my face tiredly. "I just got out of work and had a long day. I just need to lay down and relax."

He was quiet for a moment. "Do you still want me to come over?"

I smiled softly. "Who do you think I want to relax with?"

"Alright, love." He chuckled. "I'll meet you at your house. I made dinner, just soup, nothing special. Do you want me to bring you some over?"

I groaned, shaking my head and smiling. "Do you have any idea how much I love you? And your soup?"

He laughed. "Got it, I'll see you soon. I love you too."

"Bye."

When I pulled into the driveway, Wilmer was waiting for me. He walked over to my car and opened the door after I cut the engine, then pulled me into his arms the moment I got out. Being wrapped up in his arms made me feel better so instantaneously it was almost comical.

"Hi." I finally whispered, squeezing my arms around his middle.

"Hi." He murmured back, neither of us moving as we embraced in my driveway.

After a couple of minutes though, Wilmer kissed my head and took my hand, leading me towards the front door. I unlocked it, then sighed as I stepped across the threshold, grateful to finally, finally be home with him.

"Go pick out a movie." He said, kissed my shoulder and pointing towards the living room. "I'll be in soon with dinner."

"You don't want me to help this time?" I raised one eyebrow at him as he laughed.

"You had a rough day. I know that, so I'm gonna cook for you, then lay with you, and help you relax." Wilmer leaned down to kiss my forehead. "No exceptions. Couch, now."

I pulled his mouth to mine for a long moment, then smiled and walked into the other room. I collapsed on the couch and took a few slow, deep breaths. Mentally, I felt exhausted. I could practically hear Jerry Saunders voice telling me her crimes all over again.

Eventually, Wilmer walked in carrying two bowls and I smiled up at him, shifting over to make room. Once he sat down I curled into his side and closed my eyes.

"So how was your day?"

I sighed, then opened my eyes. "I spent four hours listening to a serial killer detail her crimes for me and explain how she has absolutely no remorse for what she did."

"Don't they have state psychologists for that? Why is that your job?"

I sighed. "They requested an outside source so it wouldn't be bias."

Wilmer kissed my temple and tightened his arm around me. "Are you okay?"

I pressed my face into the crook of his neck and kissed his skin. "I am now."

He smiled, leaning his cheek on top of my head. "I love you."

I took a deep breath, loving the smell of his cologne. "I love you too, Wilmer."

We sat there for a while, Wilmer rubbing my back while I played with the hem of his shirt. He kept checking his watch and finally shifted to get up.

"Okay, dinner is just about ready. I made most of it at my house, but I've still got some cooking to do." He kissed my forehead. "Stay here, love."

I nodded and pulled the blanket tighter over my shoulders as he walked back into the kitchen. I tried to focus on the TV but eventually just muted it and closed my eyes. I didn't want to think about today or tomorrow or what the rest of my week would entail. I wanted to curl up in bed with Wilmer and shut out the world.

I must've fallen asleep, because when I woke up, Wilmer was squatting in front of me with a bowl and a soft smile. "I didn't want to wake you up, but I figured you'd want to eat."

"Thank you." I pushed myself up with a groan and took the bowl. "Sorry I'm being weird tonight. Sometimes my job is lot, emotionally."

"No, I understand." Wilmer smiled and shrugged as he sat down. "Don't worry about it."

I leaned into his side and brought a spoonful of his soup to my mouth. "Wow, this tastes amazing."

"Family recipe." He winked. "One day I'll let you in on the secret."

I laughed and we continued to eat, discarding our bowls on the coffee tables once we were done and wrapping around each other to start a movie. When the beginning credits of some comedy that he swore by rolled past, I couldn't help but reflect on my life a bit. When I was with Greg I had to be on high alert at all times, wary of every word I said and every movement I had. He would analyze a shift in my weight on the couch to me being angry with him. He would say my tone of voice was disrespectful when I was just tired from work. Being on-edge all the time was exhausting, so it was a relief I never had to think twice around Wilmer. I didn't have to think about how he would take my sarcasm, how he would react to me being late for dinner from getting caught up at work. It allowed me to maintain a level of peace that I never thought possible, and unlike with Greg it only got stronger the closer I got to him. Here on the couch, all of our limbs entangled and his head resting on my chest, I couldn't feel more euphoric.

"What are you thinking about?" I looked down and saw Wilmer's eyes trained on me instead of the TV.

"You." I smiled softly. "How different you are from Greg, how much more I love you than him."

"He's never gonna hurt you again." Wilmer said. "I promise."

"I know, I believe you." I kissed him softly. "That's why I'm thinking about it. I'm so happy here with you, I'm so content just to be here with you. With Greg, it was always a gamble on when he was gonna explode."

"I can't imagine going through what you went through." He kissed my forehead and shook his head. "I can't believe he's not in jail."

"His dad got to the judge, and he got a light sentence. Now that he's violated his parole I hope they find him and he'll never get out, but I can't get my hopes up."

"He better hope the police find him before I do."

I smiled and ran my fingertips over his jawline. "I don't ever want you two to meet again. Only one of you should go to jail."

"And one day he will. I promise."

The next morning I woke up lying against Wilmer's chest, with his arms wrapped around me while my alarm blared. I felt Wilmer jolt awake a few seconds later and he groaned as he snuggled into my neck.

"Good morning." I whispered, and giggled when he kissed my neck.

"Morning," he rasped. "Go back to sleep."

I shook my head then turned over and pressed my lips to his sleepy ones. "I have work, Wilmer. I've gotta get up, and so do you. We're taking Mia on an off-campus visit, remember?"

He nodded blearily but gripped my waist when I tried to get up to pull me back down. "What if you and I have an off-campus visit?" He asked, and peppered kisses up my shoulder.

"That doesn't even make sense!" I laughed, and shook my head. "Come on, baby."

Wilmer pulled his head away and raised his eyebrows. "There it is again... baby."

I blushed and looked down. "It just slipped out, I guess."

He smiled and kissed me gently. "No, I like it. I really like it."

I raised one eyebrow but before I could reply he leaned down to kiss me again. This time, his lips lingered on mine but when he tried to pull me back down next to him I broke the kiss and shook my head. I opened my mouth to tell him no again but his lips had moved to my neck and his teeth grazed my earlobe.

"Fine, you have fifteen minutes."
