CHAPTER SEVEN
As Luke drove through the streets, the moonlight casting soft shadows over the road, Percy couldn't help but feel the energy between them intensifying. She was still buzzing from their kiss, from the way he'd looked at her, the promise in his eyes. Yet, there was something more to this night, something unspoken that she could sense in the way Luke's hands gripped the handlebars a little tighter, in the way his body seemed slightly more rigid than usual.
When they reached the outskirts of the city, Luke slowed the bike and turned down an overgrown path lined with towering trees. The air seemed heavier here, carrying a sense of quiet reverence. Percy's curiosity was piqued, and she wondered what exactly they were headed toward. Luke parked the bike, dismounting and holding a hand out to help her off. His fingers were warm against hers, and the contact sent a rush of anticipation through her.
"So, where are we?" Percy asked, taking in their surroundings. The trees were ancient, their gnarled branches reaching toward the sky as though searching for something.
"Just wait," Luke said, his tone almost teasing. "It's worth it, trust me."
"You ain't gonna murder me here, are you?" Percy jokes. "'Cause I mean, it's night, no one's around..."
Luke laughed softly, shaking his head as he guided her further along the path. "If I wanted to murder you, do you think I'd bother with such a scenic route?" He squeezes her hand, taking the spare helmet she took off from her to place on his bike. "Relax. You're safe with me. I wouldn't let anything bad happen to you."
"Well, I don't know..." She continues jokingly, her voice lowering, "Maybe you're luring me into a false sense of security."
Luke laughs again, his eyes twinkling. "Come on, babe, have a little faith."
Percy's heart skipped a beat at the nickname, her cheeks warming at the fondness in his tone. She followed him along the path, ducking whenever he brushed back some of the branches. Eventually, the trees opened up, and she saw the most breathtaking sight before her. She never realized this place was here. It was like a secret garden hidden away from the rest of the world. A vast meadow stretched out before them, bathed in soft moonlight. Wildflowers of every color danced in the gentle breeze, their petals glowing faintly under the silvery light. In the distance, a small, crystal—clear pond mirrored the sky, its surface shimmering like a bed of stars.
Percy gasps, her breath catching in her throat as she took in the beauty of it all. "Luke...This is incredible." She said softly, her voice filled with awe. "I had no idea this place existed. It's like a dream."
Luke's expression softens, a hint of nostalgia flickering in his eyes. "It's one of my favorite places. I haven't been here in a long time, but...It still holds a special place in my heart."
Percy could sense the emotion behind his words, the memories that were resurfacing. She reached for his hand, intertwining her fingers with his, offering silent support. She could see the pain in his eyes, and her heart ached for him. Whatever had happened, whatever was haunting him, it wasn't something he was ready to share yet. And she understood. There was no pressure. If and when he was ready, she would be there. He took a deep breath, blinking away the tears that had begun to form. Then, he smiled, squeezing her hand as if to remind himself that she was still there, and this was real. That pain and sadness didn't have to control him anymore.
"You haven't seen anything yet," Luke said, his grin returning. "Follow me."
Percy didn't hesitate, and Luke led her deeper into the meadow. He kept glancing at her, his heart swelling at the wonder and awe he saw reflected in her eyes. His heart ached as he's reminded of someone else important to him and how she reacted the same way he first took her here. He swallowed hard, shaking his head slightly. This was a different moment, and it was meant for him and Percy. He didn't need to compare it to the past. He pushed the thoughts aside, focusing on the present, and the incredible woman beside him. They continued their journey, weaving through the wildflowers until they reached a clearing.
In the clearing stood an old wooden gazebo, its structure weathered yet sturdy, draped in ivy and twinkling fairy lights that seemed almost magical in the moonlight. A soft blanket was spread out on the floor of the gazebo, along with a small lantern that cast a warm, inviting glow. Percy let out another soft gasp, her hand covering her mouth as she took it all in.
"Luke..." She turns to him, her eyes wide with wonder. "Did you set this all up by yourself? Just for me?"
Luke rubs the back of his neck, looking a little sheepish but pleased as his face turns pink. "Yeah, I did. I wanted tonight to be special. I figured someone as amazing as you deserved more than just a motorcycle ride and a view."
"I was perfectly fine with just the motorcycle and the view." Percy reassures him, her heart fluttering while she smiles fondly at him. "But this is incredible. It's...It's perfect."
"Yeah?" Luke's expression brightens, the tension fading from his shoulders. "I'm glad. I wasn't sure if you'd think it was too much, or, uh, not enough or whatever. But I really wanted to impress you, Percy."
Percy blushes, her heart racing. "You did, Luke. You really did."
Luke smiles, his gaze softening. "I'm glad. C'mon, let's get comfortable." He took her hand again, guiding her into the gazebo and settling on the blanket beside her.
Percy's nerves were still there, but she was also relaxed. Luke's presence was reassuring, and the energy between them was charged, but in a good way. She couldn't believe this was real, that she was sitting in this hidden paradise, surrounded by the most beautiful flowers, with a gorgeous man who was clearly making an effort to impress her. She could feel the warmth radiating off his body, his hand still holding hers. It was such a small gesture, but it felt so significant. The way his thumb was lazily stroking the back of her hand, the way his eyes locked onto hers, as if there was nowhere else he'd rather be.
"What do you think?" He asked, his tone hopeful.
"I can't believe this place exists. How did you find it?" She said, looking around once more, still unable to grasp that she was truly here.
"I found it when I got lost one day when I was a kid." He explains. "It's been one of my favorite spots ever since. I don't bring many people here, just people that are special to me...Though I haven't brought anyone else here since she..." He swallows hard, closing his eyes for a moment as if to regain his composure. "Sorry. I didn't mean to make things awkward." He trailed off, his voice tinged with a vulnerability Percy hadn't heard before. He released a shaky breath, and Percy reached out instinctively, resting her hand on his arm.
"Luke," She says softly, her voice filled with understanding. "You don't have to apologize. I know it's not easy to talk about the past, especially when it still hurts." She gave his arm a gentle squeeze. "But I'm here. You don't have to carry it alone."
He glances at her, his blue eyes glimmering with gratitude and something deeper, something unspoken. "Thanks, Percy. That means a lot," He murmurs. He looks down at their joined hands, his thumb resuming its soothing motion across her skin. "My daughter was the last person I brought here..." He finally confessed.
Percy's eyes widened in surprise. She knew he had a daughter, she knew his daughter had passed in a car accident they had been in, but she didn't know much. She didn't want to pry even though she was curious to know more about him. "Luke," She begins, her tone gentle. "You don't have to tell me, it's okay—"
Luke shakes his head slightly, his lips curving into a bittersweet smile. "No, I want to," He interrupts softly. "You deserve to know." He takes a deep breath, as if steadying himself against the weight of the memories. "Her name was Faye. She was six when she passed...She had this way of lighting up a room, like a little spark of sunshine. She loved this place." His voice falters, and he looked away, blinking rapidly as he tried to fought back the tears. "We used to come here all the time. She called it 'our secret magic garden.'"
Percy felt a lump forming in her throat, her heart breaking for him. She could see how deeply he loved his daughter and how much he still grieved her loss. She wanted to say something comforting but found herself at a loss for words. Instead, she squeezed his hand, letting her presence speak for her. Luke took another shaky breath, his fingers curling slightly around hers as if seeking comfort from her touch. The silence stretched between them, heavy with unspoken emotions, but it wasn't uncomfortable. Percy stayed quiet, allowing him the space he needed. She didn't rush him, letting him gather his thoughts.
After a long moment, Luke continues, his voice quieter now, almost as if speaking the words aloud helped him keep the memories close. "I don't talk about her much, it hurts too much...But it feels like she's still here sometimes, you know? Like I can almost hear her laughing in the wind or see her running through the flowers." His lips trembles, but he gave her a small smile, one filled with tenderness. "I guess I've always kept it to myself, trying to protect her memory. But being here with you, Percy...I don't feel like I have to hide it anymore. I want you to know about her, know about the real me. And I'm messed up, Percy. I'm broken, and I've done a lot of things I'm not proud of."
"I'm not perfect either, Luke. You're not alone. We all have our baggage, we've all made mistakes. But that doesn't change who you are. It doesn't change how amazing you are. Or how much I care about you." She tells him honestly, reaching up with her free hand to gently wipe away the tears that had started falling down his cheeks. "Thank you for sharing this part of yourself with me. I'm honored that you trust me enough to let me in. And if you ever want to talk about Faye, or anything else, I'm here. You can lean on me, Luke. You don't have to go through this alone anymore."
He stares at her in surprise, as if no one had ever spoken to him like that before. The pain was still evident in his eyes, but he no longer looked haunted. He gave her a grateful look, the corners of his lips curving into a small smile. "Percy...You're incredible. I'm lucky to have you in my life." He leaned in, pressing a tender kiss to her forehead. Percy's cheeks warmed, a soft blush coloring her face.
"So, uh," She starts, clearing her throat as she pulls back. "Tell me more."
"About?" He raised his eyebrows at her, squeezing her hand.
"Everything about you. I want to know more. What makes you...You?" Percy smiled softly, her voice curious but gentle, as if she were asking him to share the deeper layers of himself, the parts that weren't always visible on the surface.
Luke leaned back slightly, looking at her with a mixture of amusement and appreciation. He seemed to be considering her question for a moment, then nodded, his lips curling into a small, warm smile. He explained more about his backstory, about his parents and his family. How they'd died in a plane crash when he was a kid (and now he's terrified of flying) and he had grown up with his aunt and uncle who became more like parents to him. He told her how he loved sports as a kid, was great in baseball. Didn't bother going to college since he and his girlfriend at the time had a baby girl on the way and he felt it was more important to step up and take responsibility. He shared how they had struggled as young parents but made the best of it, finding joy in raising their daughter, Faye, even though life hadn't been easy.
But even after Faye grew up, Luke's girlfriend who eventually turned to his fiancé encouraged him to follow his dreams and he eventually went to become a firefighter and did so well that he's now the chief. He told her the struggles that came with having a high position and how he was under a lot of pressure, and he didn't always do the right thing and had made many mistakes along the way. But he learned from those mistakes and used them to become a better leader and a better person. Percy listened intently, her eyes never leaving his as he spoke, absorbing every detail.
When he finished talking, he gave her a shy smile, rubbing the back of his neck. "Sorry, I probably talked your ear off."
"Not at all." Percy reassures, returning his smile. "I like hearing you talk. I like learning more about you." She looks at him with soft, earnest eyes, her voice gentle yet firm. "It means a lot that you trust me enough to share all of that. I know it's not easy to open up like that, but... it makes me feel closer to you. Like I understand you more now."
Luke's smile softens as he held her gaze, his shoulders visibly relaxing. "I don't talk about it much," He admits. "It's not that I don't want to, it's just...I'm used to being the one people lean on. I don't usually let my guard down. But with you..." He pauses, his voice trailing off for a moment before he added softly, "It's different. You make it easy to talk."
Percy's chest tightened at his words, warmth spreading through her. She felt honored—like she had been given a rare glimpse into his heart, into the man behind the confident exterior. "Well, I'm glad," She admits, a soft smile tugging at her lips. "Because I want to know all of you—the good parts, the hard parts, all of it. You don't have to carry everything on your own anymore. I'm here, okay?"
Luke stared at her for a moment, his blue eyes shimmering with something she couldn't quite place. It was a mix of gratitude and awe, as though her words had lifted a weight he hadn't realized he was still carrying. He reached out, gently tucking a strand of her hair behind her ear, his touch lingering for just a moment.
"You're something else, Percy," He murmurs, his voice low and filled with quiet admiration. "I don't know what I did to deserve someone like you in my life, but I'm grateful every day that you're here."
Percy's heart flutters, her cheeks warming under his gaze. She felt the depth of his words settle in her bones, real and unshakable. "You deserve all of it, Luke," She whispers, reaching out to take his hand in hers. "Don't ever doubt that." For a moment, neither of them spoke. They simply sat there, hands intertwined, surrounded by the quiet magic of the garden. The lanterns flickered softly in the breeze, and the faint sound of crickets filled the air like a gentle symphony.
Luke was the first to break the silence, though his voice was soft and contemplative. "You know... I used to come here with Faye when she was little. She loved it. Said it felt like a secret world where anything was possible." He smiles faintly, a distant look in his eyes. "Sometimes I forget what it's like to see the world that way—through the eyes of a kid. But tonight...Being here with you, it's like I'm seeing it again."
Percy's breath caught in her throat as she squeezed his hand gently. "That's the magic of this place," She said softly. "And maybe...Maybe that's the magic of us, too."
Luke looked at her then, his eyes searching hers as though he were trying to commit every detail of her face to memory. Slowly, he leaned in, closing the small distance between them. Percy's heart pounded as she tilted her head up to meet him, their lips brushing in a kiss that was soft, slow, and filled with unspoken promises.
When they finally pulled apart, Percy rests her forehead against his, a quiet, contented smile on her lips. "Thank you for sharing all of that with me," She says softly. "For letting me in."
Luke smiles, his breath warm against her cheek. "It felt right," He murmurs, his tone filled with honesty. "I wanted you to know me, all of me. Because you're someone special, Percy. Someone who makes me feel like I can be myself without fear of judgment." His thumb gently traced the back of her hand once more, his gaze soft and affectionate. Percy's heart swelled, a mix of emotions flooding her chest. She didn't know when it happened, but somewhere along the way, Luke had become someone she didn't just care about—he was someone she could see a future with. Someone who had been through so much, and yet, was still capable of so much tenderness and strength.
"I feel the same," She murmurs, her voice barely above a breath. "You make me feel safe....You make me feel special, Luke. And I know we haven't known each other long, but...I feel like this is the start of something real. Something that could last."
Luke's expression brightens, a smile lighting up his face. "Yeah?" He asked, a hint of disbelief and hopefulness in his voice.
"Yeah," She confirms, a shy, genuine smile playing on her lips. "So, um, do you maybe wanna go on another date with me sometime?"
"Are you kidding? Of course." He immediately replies, his face tinting pink when he realized how eager he sounded. He coughs lightly, clearing his throat, and then continues, his voice more even. "I'd love to go on another date with you, Percy."
She giggles, her eyes sparkling. "Perfect. Just let me know when and where." She perks up when she remembered something. "Oh, wait. Actually there's this sand volleyball tournament I'm going to in a couple of days. Was wondering if maybe you wanted to come along with me. You don't have to if you don't want to, that's fine." She quickly adds. "We can do something else for our date instead, if you prefer-"
"No, I want to go," He reassures her, his tone firm. "I would love to come with you." He assures her, squeezing her hand. "I actually love sand volleyball. At the firehouse we have a team, and we play every summer. It's always a lot of fun." He grins, his enthusiasm genuine. "So yeah, count me in. I'm really looking forward to it."
Percy's eyes light up at his response, feeling a wave of excitement. "Really? That's awesome! It'll be fun then, especially since you already know your way around a volleyball court." She teases him lightly. "I'm looking forward to it, too."
Luke grins, reaching over to cup her cheek gently, his thumb brushing her skin with the same tenderness that had been present all night. "I guess we've got ourselves a plan, then," He said softly. "But fair warning—when I'm on the court, I play to win."
Percy laughs, a light and joyful sound that made Luke's heart soar. "Oh, don't worry. I'm not planning on going easy either." She arches a playful brow, her competitive spirit already shining through. "So I hope you're ready to bring your A-game, firefighter."
Luke's smile widens, the playful challenge making him feel alive. "Bring it on, Elowen." He pulled her in for a kiss that surprised her, but she welcomed it.
The kiss was sweet and passionate, sending sparks throughout her body. She melted into him, her arms winding around his neck. His fingers tangled in her hair as he deepened the kiss, pulling her close, until there was no space between them. They stayed like that for a long moment, lost in each other.
When they finally parted, they were both breathless, their cheeks flushed. Percy grinned at him, her eyes sparkling with delight. "Wow," She giggles as she blushes. "That was some kiss."
Luke chuckles, resting his forehead against hers. "You're some woman."
"And you're one h***of a man," Percy replies with a playful smile, her heart still racing from the kiss. She looks up at him, her eyes softening with affection. "I can't wait for our date—and to see you on that volleyball court. Just don't get too cocky, okay?" She teased, her voice light but full of warmth.
Luke laughs, his arms still around her, his lips curling into a grin. "I'll try not to, but no promises. I can't help it if I'm good at what I do." He winked and pulled her in for another passionate kiss, cutting off her laughter as their lips met once more.
Percy felt herself sink deeper into the moment, her heart soaring with every touch, every breath they shared. It was an incredible night, and she was beyond happy to be there, spending time with Luke. He was unlike anyone she'd ever known, and she couldn't wait to see where this new chapter would take them.
