Chapter 9

"So, how do you know Anakin?" Luke asked, sipping softly at the soup he had been offered.

"A long story, that is." Yoda said, smiling lightly. Luke sighed at the usual crypticness of the small troll Jedi.

He wanted desperately to go outside of the cottage and make sure his new friend was alright, but he was also worried about Master Yoda.

     He seemed...frailer...than usual.

"Hmm. That face you make. Look I so old to young eyes?" Yoda asked, suddenly smug.

Luke blinked at the accusation and quickly moved to apologize. "N-No...of course not!"

Yoda chuckled at the boy's embarrassment. "I do, yes, I do! Sick have I become. Old and weak." He pointed an accusing finger at the youth. "When nine hundred years old you reach, look as good you will not. Hmm?"

Yoda chuckled again, it quickly turning into a wheezing cough as he hobbled over towards his bed. "Soon will I rest. Yes, forever sleep. Earned it, I have." Yoda sat himself on his bed with great effort.

Luke quickly realized what Yoda was trying to say and startled, sensing that his Master's Force signature was indeed weakening.

"Master Yoda, you can't die." Luke pleaded, as if he could somehow stop it.

"Strong am I with the Force...but not that strong. Twilight is upon me and soon night must fall. That is the way of things...the way of the Force." Yoda mused, handing his gimer stick to Luke, whose palms dwarfed the small stick as he held it.

"But I need your help. I've come back to complete the training." Luke begged, looking nervous.

"No more training do you require. Already know you that which you need. Anakin, the one who needs help, he is." Yoda said darkly.

"Help? With what?" Luke asked, curious.

"Straying close to the dark side he is, help him you must." Yoda said, knowing if Luke could succeed with Anakin, then maybe this horrific world would be fixed by Anakin's return.

"Then will I be a Jedi?" Luke asked, looking worried at the fact that Anakin was close to the Dark. The fact that he had just seen Luke's reoccurring nightmare with a front-row seat...that couldn't be helpful.

"No. One thing remains: Vader." The name sent chills down the room and Luke fought the urge to shrink back in terror. "You must confront Vader. Then, only then, a Jedi will you be. And confront him you will. But alone, you will not be."

"What, Anakin? He'll help me?" Luke asked, again wondering why this stranger had so much to do with him.

"Trust him you can. The future, always in motion it is. Alterable, it can be at times." Yoda said.

A question suddenly bubbled up in Luke, but his vocal chords seemed to prevent him from asking it. He nervously bit his lip before clearing his throat, looking Yoda dead in the eyes.

"Master Yoda...is Darth Vader my father?"

Yoda paused, not really surprised at the question. Luke could've sworn his eyes had flicked to the door for a brief second, but he couldn't be sure.

Yoda's expression was full of weariness and compassion and an odd, sad smile creased his face. He turned painfully on his side, looking away from Luke and avoiding his question.

"Mmm...rest I need. Yes...rest." Luke watched him in exasperation, each moment an eternity.

"Yoda, I must know." Luke pleaded, leaning forward and turning wide blue eyes on the small troll.

Yoda sighed. "Your father he is."

At the truth, Luke flinched back as if cut.

      'So Vader wasn't lying...'

"Told you, did he?" Yoda asked.

"Yes." Luke said shamefully, wincing at the memory of directly ignoring a deliberate warning from both Ben and Yoda. And in the process he had almost lost Han, Leia, and Chewie while also losing his hand and most likely his healthy mental state.

A new look of concern crossed Yoda's face as Luke's thoughts rampaged around the Force. He closed his eyes with a sigh. "Unexpected this is, and unfortunate..."

Luke interrupted rather sharply, the realization that he had been lied to clicking in his mind. "Unfortunate that I know the truth!?"

Yoda opened his eyes again and studied the youth. "No. Unfortunate that you rushed to face him...that incomplete was your training. Not ready for the burden were you."

Luke slumped downwards, mumbling, "Well, I'm sorry."

"Remember, a Jedi's strength flows from the Force. But beware. Anger, fear, aggression. The dark side are they. Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny." He beckoned the young Jedi closer to him, sensing a light feeling coming over him. "Luke...Luke...Do not...Do not underestimate the powers of the Emperor, or suffer your father's fate, you will..." Luke blinked at the words and realized that his Master was using his last breaths to speak. Silence overcame the room and he stared with wide eyes, taking in the words with a deft ear. "When gone am I," Yoda coughed violently. "the last of the Jedi will you be. Luke, the Force runs strong in your family. Pass on what you have learned...help Anakin..."

The door suddenly burst open, and Anakin stared down at the dying Jedi Master with wide eyes. "Master Yoda?"

Yoda smiled wearily, his last breaths used to utter four final words, "There is...another...Sky...Sky...walker."

The ancient Jedi Master's eyes slid closed for the final time, his last sight the Skywalker boys, the children of the Force. His body faded away into the Force, similar to how Obi-Wan had died, and there was finally nothing left but an empty bed.

A small sob escaped Luke's mouth and he wiped his eyes hastily, refusing to cry. An arm suddenly wrapped around him and he looked up to see Anakin smiling down at him, looking just as emotional.

"It's okay." Anakin whispered, stroking the boy's hair as he leaned into his embrace.

"He said you'd help me defeat Vader." Luke mumbled numbly.

Anakin winced at the name, now knowing his future and wondering what could have possibly gone wrong. "I will. I promise."

However, Anakin was still too distracted by Yoda's final words, wondering what they could mean.

    'There is another Skywalker.'

    But who?

Leia jerked suddenly in her seat, her eyes snapping away from the lulling blue of hyperspace. The door to the cockpit slid open and Han walked in, stretching stiff limbs and yawning loudly. He quickly noticed the Princess sitting in the co-pilot seat, seemingly riveted with the outside of the viewport.

Han sighed and moved up behind her, glad to see she had put on the clothes he had given her. Once his eyesight had thankfully returned, he had been mortified to finally see what Leia had been wearing. Before Leia had even gotten the chance to protest, he was already shoving her into the refresher with a set of suitable clothes.

Seeing how Leia had been treated had brought anger shooting through Han, but he calmed himself eventually, knowing there was nothing he could do about it now.

Now, as he watched Leia silently sit and stare, he cleared his throat to announce his presence. She hardly blinked.

"Hi, Han." She whispered.

"You alright, sweetheart?" He asked, kneeling beside her and looking concerned. He had just got back from talking with Lando over the comm again and wanted to check on her. He hadn't really expected her to be so withdrawn. How much had happened while he had been frozen?

"Yeah...I just feel something. I'm not sure what." She sighed, drawing in on herself and putting her head between her knees. "I'm sorry. Here I am complaining and you just escaped carbonite...you should be like this, not me."

"Leia, don't say that. We've all been through our share of troubles. It's okay to--"

"No it's not!" Leia cried, brushing a tear off her cheek. Han winced at the outburst and bit his lip, not knowing what to say.

"It's just...I don't know...it doesn't feel right. And that Anakin character, can we even trust him?" Leia asked.

"Luke seems to. I trust the kid's judgment." Han said honestly.

"I do too, I just...I can't explain it. He seems so familiar. Almost as if I've met him before. And don't tell me it's a coincidence that he looks almost exactly like Luke." Leia said.

Han sighed, shrugging his shoulders. "Well whoever he is, he helped rescue me and I owe him that at least."

Leia smiled and stroked Han's cheek with her hand. Han's own calloused hand, easily dwarfing her petite one, rose up and grasped her wrist, rubbing it with his thumb. Slowly, they leaned forward and pressed their lips together, relishing in each other's embrace.

Leia breathed against his face. "I thought I had lost you." She whispered.

"I'm right here, and I'm alright. I promise." Han smiled against her. "I love you."

Leia looked up at him playfully, a tear slipping down her cheek. "I know."
