Chapter 13
On a hill, the helmeted Rebel contingent silently made its way up a steep trail. Leia and Han were slightly ahead of Chewie, Anakin, and Luke, and the troops of the strike-team squad followed with Artoo and Threepio bringing up the rear.
Up ahead, Chewie and Leia reached a crest in the hill and dropped suddenly to the ground, signaling the rest of the group to stop. Han, Anakin, and Luke crawled up to take a look.
"Oh, I told you it was dangerous here." Threepio muttered.
Not far below them, two Imperial scouts were wandering through bushes in the valley below. Their two speeder bikes were parked nearby. Anakin noted their location in case they needed a getaway.
"Shall we try and go around?" Leia whispered.
Han bit his lip. "It'll take time. This whole party'll be for nothing if they see us."
Leia motioned for the squad to stay put, then she, Han, Luke, Anakin, and Chewie started quietly down. Once they got close enough, the five of them got on their stomachs behind a log.
"Chewie and I will take care of this. You stay here." Han said suddenly, sliding his blaster out of his holster.
Luke reached over Leia and Anakin to suddenly pull Han back down from his standing. "Quietly. There might be more of them out there." Luke hissed under his breath, noticing how full of energy his friend seemed to be.
Han just smirked. "Hey...it's me!" With that, he clambered off through the brush, staying low to the ground. Both Leia and Luke rolled their eyes at the same time, and Anakin fought a smile. Now that he knew, they really did look and act like twins.
The Skywalkers' watched Han by peeking over the log. He was currently behind a tree, his blaster gripped tightly and ready to fire at a moment's notice. He stealthily snuck up behind one of the scouts, his face set in a determined look. Anakin saw what was about to happen, and was about to give away their position, when Han stepped on a twig and the scout whirled around instinctively, knocking the Corellian into a tree. Han, dazed at the sudden motion, barely registered the scout shout for his companion. "Go for help! Go!"
The second scout quickly jumped on his speeder bike and took off, but Chewie reacted faster and managed a shot off his crossbow, causing the scout to crash into a tree. The first scout noticed his companion's demise and suddenly attacked Han in a fist fight. Han blinked in surprise at the scout tackling him, and instantly began to turn the pounding fists back on the imperial.
"Great." Anakin muttered sarcastically. "Wonderful taste in men, Your Majesty."
Leia blinked and Luke rolled his eyes. "Come on, we have to help him!"
Luke jumped to his feet and ran down the clearing, Anakin and Leia not far behind him.
Luke and Anakin started for the scuffle between Han and the scout, followed by Leia with her laser pistol drawn. As they ran through the bushes, Leia suddenly stopped and pointed to where two more scouts were sitting on their speeder bikes...with two unoccupied bikes parked nearby.
"Over there! Two more of them!" Leia called, catching Anakin and Luke's attention. She immediately ran towards them, planning on shooting the scouts out.
"Wait, Leia!" Luke cried, racing after his reckless sister.
Anakin looked between his children and the Corellian, and swore. "Sorry Solo."
It was probably a good thing Han didn't hear him, as he continued to tussle with the stubborn Imperial scout. However, the man did look up to see his companions leaving him, and he angrily slammed the scout to the ground, sighing in annoyance. "Wait for me? Nah, it's okay."
Leia didn't hear Luke as she raced for one of the remaining speeder bikes and started it up. She hit the accelerator just as a body jumped on behind her, yelping in surprise at the sudden speed.
She whirled her head around to see Luke holding onto her waist for dear life, his eyes wide. He looked up at her incredulously. "Warn me next time?" He asked breathlessly, the speed of the wind whipping at his tousled blonde hair.
Leia smiled sheepishly.
Anakin saw the twins speed off at a nauseating speed, and swore colorfully, jumping on the second unoccupied speeder and racing after them.
"Quick! Jam their commlink. Center switch!" Luke shouted over the wind. Leia did as he said, speeding the vehicle into the dense foliage in hot pursuit, barely avoiding two huge trees.
The two fleeing Imperial scouts had a good lead as Luke and Leia pursued through the giant trees at 200 miles an hour, the fire from their bike's laser cannon hitting harmlessly near the moving targets.
Suddenly, another speeder moved up beside them and Leia moved to fire. Luke held her hand back, "Wait."
And there was Anakin, smirking at them as he flew at the same speed beside them. Both Leia and Luke weren't sure, but they both could've sworn he was looking over them almost in worry.
"You two alright?" Anakin asked, his eyes alight with childish excitement.
"No. They're getting away." Leia said with a growl, pressing the accelerator harder.
"Move closer!" Anakin called.
Leia, her eyes narrowed, gunned the engine and closed the gap, the two scouts recklessly veering through a narrow gap in the trees. One of the scouts scraped a tree, slowing his bike.
"Get alongside that one!" Luke shouted next. Leia pulled her speeder bike up so close to the scout's bike that their steering vanes scraped noisily. Luke suddenly leaped from his bike to the back of the scout's, grabbing the Imperial warrior around the neck, and flipping him off the bike and into a thick tree trunk. Anakin smiled, impressed.
Luke gained control of the bike quickly, following Anakin and Leia, who had both pulled ahead. The three of them instantly teared off after the remaining scout.
"Get him!" Anakin called.
The speeding chase passed two more imperial scouts keeping watch. They both immediately swung into the pursuit, chasing Luke, Anakin, and Leia, and firing away with their laser cannon. The three Rebels looked behind them just as Luke's bike took a glancing hit.
A violent curse left the boy's lips. "Keep on that one! Anakin and I will take these two!" Luke shouted to Leia, who nodded.
Anakin didn't like the idea of his daughter going off on her own, but based off what he had seen from her since he had time-traveled, he knew that she could take care of herself.
So, with Leia shooting ahead, Luke gestured to Anakin, and they both suddenly slammed their steering vanes into the braking mode. Luke and Anakin's bikes were a blur to the two pursuing scouts as they zipped by them on either side. Father and son then slammed their bikes into forward at the same time, firing away and switching places with their pursuers in a manner of seconds. Luke's aim hit one scout's bike first, and it was blasted out of control only to explode against a tree trunk.
The scout's cohort took one glance back at the flash and shifted into turbo drive, going even faster. Luke and Anakin steadily kept on his tail.
Far ahead, Leia and the first scout were doing a high speed slalom through the death-dealing trunks. Leia, smirking, quickly aimed her bike skyward and rose out of sight.
The scout turned in confusion, unable to see his pursuer. Suddenly, Leia dove down upon him from above, cannon blasting. The scout's bike took a glancing hit and he yelled in surprise.
Leia moved in alongside him. The scout eyed her beside him, reached down, and pulled out a handgun. Before Leia could react, the scout had blasted her bike, sending it spiraling out of control. Leia quickly dove off as her bike exploded against a tree, hitting her head and watching the world go dark. The smirking scout looked back at the explosion.
But when he turned forward again, he noticed he was on a collision course with a giant fallen tree. He hit his brakes to no avail and disappeared in a bright conflagration.
Meanwhile, unaware to Leia's trouble, Luke, Anakin, and the last remaining scout, continued their weaving chase through the trees. Anakin moved up close, his hands tight on the steering vane. The scout responded by slamming his bike into Anakin's. A fallen tree formed a bridge across their path and the scout zipped under. Luke went past Anakin and over the top of the tree, crashing his bike down onto the scout's. Both riders looked ahead where a wide trunk loomed directly in Luke's path. However, the scout's bike beside him made it almost impossible for him to avoid it.
"Luke!" Anakin's shout was almost drowned out by the engines from the speeders, but Luke somehow heard it echo in his mind, radiating panic. Luke desperately banked with all his might, leaning almost horizontal over the scout's bike. He was just able to make it by, only lightly clipping the tree. When he straightened with a sigh of relief, he and the scout discovered that their two bikes had locked front vanes and were moving as one.
Another big tree loomed in Luke's path and he fought a scowl. He reacted instinctively and dove off his bike. The two bikes came apart a second before Luke's exploded against a tree. The scout sweeped out and circled back to find Luke.
Luke rose from the undergrowth as the scout beared down on him and opened fire with his laser cannon. More blaster bolts came from behind, Anakin shooting angrily at the scout. Luke ignited his lightsaber and began to deflect the bolts aimed at himself. The scout's bike kept coming, holding every intention to cut Luke in half. At the last instant, Luke stepped aside and chopped off the bike's control vanes with one mighty slash. The scout's bike soon begun to shudder, then, pitching and rolling, it rose up to slam first into Anakin's bike, and then directly into a large tree in a giant ball of fire.
Anakin, noticing his bike was shuddering as well, jumped off it and covered Luke down as it exploded not too far from them. Both Luke and Anakin looked up, the forest now eerily quiet.
Luke released a tired breath, double-checking to make sure he hadn't dropped his saber in the excitement.
"Well that was fun." Anakin said, gasping at the sudden loss of adrenaline.
Luke smiled. "Come on. We have to head back. Leia should have a head start with her bike, but we're stuck walking. No need to worry Han and Chewie."
"Good idea. Even though that Corellian was the one who got us into this mess." Anakin said with a mirthful scoff.
Luke chuckled. "Hey, it happens to the best of us."
Anakin raised an eyebrow. "He's a good man, isn't he?"
Luke blinked at the question. "Well...yeah. I mean, we're friends if that's what you mean." Luke paused. "Is this because of Leia?"
Anakin scowled at his son. "How do you know?"
Luke raised his hands up in mock surrender. "No offense, but it's kind of obvious the way you always scowl at them whenever they're two feet from each other. Ever since we left Dagobah actually. Do you...do you like her? Cause I'm cool with you dating my sister and stuff, I just-"
Anakin lost all his color and suddenly whirled, grasping Luke hard by the shoulders. "Luke, don't start making assumptions with something you don't understand."
A slow smirk came across the youth's face. "You do like her!"
Anakin tried not to strangle his son. If only he knew how bad the claim he had against him was. "Luke..." He began miserably, knowing there was no use.
"It's alright, I won't tell Han. No wonder you've seemed so protective lately." Luke said, walking ahead of Anakin with a chuckle.
Anakin sighed, just deciding to go with his son's ridiculous story until he knew the truth. However...he smirked. "Whatever you say Luke. But before you say anything more, I'm married."
Luke froze, his back going rigid. "Y-you are?"
Anakin chuckled at how pale Luke had gone.
"I...I didn't know, honest! I didn't mean any offense. It's just...well you seem so worried about Leia a lot recently. Han gets like that and I know he likes her." Luke stuttered, looking guilty.
Anakin just shook his head. "Come on. Like you said, no need to worry the others. We have a bit of a walk ahead of us."
"Great. More talking then." Luke said perkily.
"Alright, fire away." Anakin said.
"What's her name?" Luke asked, his eyes expectant.
Anakin sighed, picturing his beloved wife in his mind. "She's an angel...the most beautiful creature in the galaxy. Her name is Padmé."
Luke smiled at Anakin's wistful look. Then he frowned, feeling a sudden sadness come over him. "You miss her, don't you?"
Anakin looked at his feet. "With all my being. Hopefully, when this whole Empire thing is over, I can go back to her...and the children she's expecting."
Luke startled at that. "Children!? Congratulations, Anakin!"
Anakin smiled. "I last saw her about a few hours before I randomly appeared on Tatooine with you. Again, not sure how I got there. My best guess is the Force. But I will be a father soon, twins as I recently found out."
"Twins...like me and Leia." Luke said, a crease coming on his forehead as he thought on the coincidence.
"Yep. Which you have yet to tell her." Anakin said, knowing he was a complete hypocrite. He could tell Luke his true identity here and now...but he still didn't feel ready.
Luke blushed. "I know...I will eventually."
Anakin was about to respond when he saw familiar ground ahead of them. Then, a long trenchcoat and fluffy, light brown hair.
"Looks like we're back." Anakin pointed forward so Luke could see. The boy slumped in relief.
"About time. Let's go." Luke said, moving his walk into a jog. Anakin followed behind, feeling suddenly nervous...as if someone was missing. He thought nothing of it until he overheard Han and Luke's conversation.
"What!? She didn't come back?" Luke exclaimed after Han had said something with a relieved face that instantly turned to worry.
"I thought she was with you!" Han shouted, looking suddenly panicked.
"We...we got separated." Luke said shamefully, looking at his feet.
Han looked at his young friend unbelievingly and put his head in his hands.
Anakin moved forward quickly, giving a confused look to the both of them. Luke cast guilty blue eyes up at him through his long bangs, looking miserable. "Leia's missing."
