Chapter 11
The vast Rebel Fleet stretched as far as the eye could see throughout the depths of space. Anakin and Luke moved out of hyperspace and towards the dozens of small Corellian battleships flying in formation. Fighters and battle cruisers surrounded the largest of the Rebel Star Cruisers, the Headquarters Frigate.
"We're here." Luke said monotonously, steering the ship toward the nearest docking bay. Anakin nodded so Luke knew he heard, and sighed, staring out the viewport of their fighter. He took in several of the ships with an impressed air. This Rebellion was much more hardcore than he first thought. They were very serious about destroying the Empire and restoring the Republic.
Anakin took a deep breath, knowing he would have to face Han and Leia again, this time with completely different opinions about the both of them.
Not only that, but a dark presence seemed to be continuously gnawing at the back of his mind, threatening him silently. Anakin tried to push it away, but it didn't budge, only pressing further. He shivered and focused again on his son, smiling at how smooth his pilot skills were.
Speaking of that...would anyone in this Rebellion recognize him? He hadn't exactly been subtle about who he was back during the Clone Wars. The Negotiator and the Hero With No Fear, the dynamic Jedi duo to save the Republic.
There was bound to be plenty of people here who had lived during the Clone Wars time period and knew his face well. With that knowledge, Anakin drew his hood over his head. Luke looked back at him with a confused look, but Anakin reassured him with a nod and a faint mental message.
'Trust me.' He sent.
Luke groaned in frustration, feeling left out of something obvious once again. Anakin sighed...when would he tell Luke who he was? He had to tell him soon...but when? He still felt wary to tell him, worrying it would put him and his sister in danger.
When they pulled into the docking bay, Luke clambered out first, waving at a few pilot friends he saw throughout the room. Anakin swept the room with the Force and climbed out as well. A tech moved forward to tend to the Y-Wing and Luke started moving through the bay, where he was going, Anakin was unsure.
He followed him, still not saying a word as they strolled through the hall. Luke quickened his pace when they reached a door and suddenly stopped, turning to Anakin.
"They're not going to know who you are, so they'll be wary. So...it's Alliance custom for unknown visitors to scan in, to make sure you aren't Imperial." Luke said, looking kind of sheepish that he had forgotten that certain protocol before he had gotten here.
"But I'm not--" Luke held up a hand.
"I know. But they won't let you stay if they don't trust you." Luke said.
Anakin grumbled. "Fine. What do I do?"
"A droid just takes a DNA sample and puts it in a database to find out--"
"No." Anakin said firmly, his eyes narrowing.
Luke blinked at the sudden anger in Anakin's voice. "Why? What's the matter?"
Anakin looked around as if someone was watching him, looking cautious. "Luke, you know by this point that I'm a Jedi. Having my information in a database is rather dangerous for me. The Empire hasn't found me yet, right?"
Luke looked uncertain, knowing Anakin was right. "You didn't seem to know much about the Empire when I first met you on Tatooine."
Anakin shrugged, trying his best to act nonchalant. "A cover."
Luke scoffed. "That was a cover? You seemed genuinely confused to me."
"Please Luke...they'll trust me. And if they don't...then we'll deal with that when we get to that."
Luke took a deep breath and looked at the war room's closed doors. "Alright. But I better not get in trouble for this."
Anakin smirked. "Wouldn't dream of it."
***
Hundreds of Rebel commanders of all races and forms were assembled in the war room. In the center of the room was a holographic model depicting the half-completed Imperial Death Star, the nearby Moon of Endor, and the protecting deflector shield.
Mon Mothma, the leader of the Alliance, entered the room. Conferring with her were several military leaders, including General Madine and Admiral Ackbar, a salmon-colored Mon Calamari.
Lando moved through the crowd until he found Han and Chewie, standing next to Leia and the two droids. Han peered at Lando's new insignia on his chest, and tried not to laugh.
"Well, look at you, a general, huh?" Han asked.
Lando smiled proudly. "Oh, well, someone must have told them about my little maneuver at the battle of Taanab."
Sarcasm overtook the Corellian and he smirked at his friend. "Well, don't look at me, pal. I just said you were a fair pilot. I didn't know they were lookin' for somebody to lead this crazy attack."
Lando chuckled. "I'm surprised they didn't ask you to do it."
"Well, who says they didn't? But I ain't crazy. You're the respectable one, remember?" Han teased, still fighting back the grin that was breaking out on his face.
Mon Mothma suddenly signaled for attention, and the room fell silent. The former Republican senator cleared her throat and studied the men and women present in the room, all eager to take down the Empire. "The Emperor has made a critical error and the time for our attack has come."
The sentence alone caused a stir. Mon Mothma ignored it and turned to the holographic model of the Death Star, the Endor moon, and the protecting deflector shield in the center of the room.
"The data brought to us by the Bothan spies pinpoints the exact location of the Emperor's new battle station. We also know that the weapon systems of this Death Star are not yet operational. With the Imperial Fleet spread throughout the galaxy in a vain effort to engage us, it is relatively unprotected. But most important of all, we've learned that the Emperor himself is personally overseeing the final stages of the construction of this Death Star."
A volley of spirited chatter erupted from the crowd. Han turned to Leia as Chewie barked his amazement.
"Many Bothans died to bring us this information." Mon Mothma said grimly, quickly silencing the cheers. She sighed and turned to the Mon Calamari. "Admiral Ackbar, please."
Admiral Ackbar stepped forward with a nod and pointed to the Death Star's force field and the Moon of Endor. "You can see here the Death Star orbiting the forest Moon of Endor. Although the weapon systems on this Death Star are not yet operational, the Death Star does have a strong defense mechanism. It is protected by an energy shield, which is generated from the nearby forest Moon of Endor. The shield must be deactivated if any attack is to be attempted. Once the shield is down, our cruisers will create a perimeter, while the fighters fly into the superstructure and attempt to knock out the main reactor."
A concerned murmur throughout the crowd.
"General Calrissian has volunteered to lead the fighter attack." Ackbar said, gesturing at Lando, who stood and bowed respectfully. Han smiled again.
"Good luck." He interrupted, wincing at how loud it had come out.
Lando nodded his thanks only to hear Han mutter, "You're gonna need it." Lando scowled and slowly looked at his friend with an expression that read, 'Why thanks for the encouragement.'
"General Madine." Ackbar said, gesturing for Lando to sit and for General Crix Madine to speak. Madine moved forward, clearing his throat.
"We have stolen a small Imperial shuttle. Disguised as a cargo ship, and using a secret Imperial code, a strike team will land on the moon and deactivate the shield generator."
"Sounds dangerous." Threepio muttered worriedly.
"I wonder who they found to pull that off." Leia mumbled to Han, who winced in preparation.
"General Solo, is your strike team assembled?" Madine said suddenly, looking at Han. Leia blinked, looking at Han in surprise.
"Uh, my team's ready." Han said awkwardly. "I don't have a command crew for the shuttle though."
Chewbacca immediately raised his hairy paw and volunteered. Han looked up at him. "Well, it's gonna be rough, pal. I didn't want to speak for you." Chewie waved the statement off with a low growl.
Han smiled. "That's one."
"Uh, General... count me in." Leia said, looking at Han with a light smile.
"And us." A voice said from the door. The entire room turned to see two figures. One was obviously Luke, still clad in the same thing he had been wearing on Tatooine and standing by the door with his face morphed in that of embarrassment.
The figure standing before him was hooded, unrecognizable, but Leia caught a flash of metal on his belt and bit her lip. It was Anakin.
"And who are you?" General Madine asked, looking from Commander Skywalker to the stranger.
"A friend." Anakin said under his hood, smiling. He noticed a few familiar faces in the room. Mon Mothma, a Senator in the Galactic Republic...and Captain Ackbar! He had fought by the Mon Calamari's side during a mission involving a civil war between the Mon Calamari and the Quarren sometime during the Clone Wars.
With that, he kept himself concealed, making sure to lower his voice a bit as well. Could never be too cautious.
As Anakin spoke, Luke noticed he was lowering his voice and suddenly shivered. For a second he had sounded like...
'I am your father.'
Luke shook his head violently. 'Get it together Skywalker.'
"That doesn't help us very much." Madine said with a scowl, preparing to comm for security.
"Well...I didn't really want to reveal much today. But oh well." Anakin slipped his hand to his belt and ignited his saber, brandishing it high for everyone to see.
Everyone's eyes widened. "A Jedi." Mon Mothma breathed. Excited and worried chattering started up amongst the Rebels.
"Anyone can take a lightsaber from a Jedi." Madine said, not looking very impressed.
Anakin rolled his eyes and thrust his hand out. Suddenly, several blasters flew out of holsters and into the air. Several Rebels cried out in surprise, scrambling for their weapons hovering over their heads.
Even Luke was awed. He was still learning a bit, but Anakin had full-fledged power and everything.
Madine gaped and then scowled. "Then why are you concealing yourself, Jedi?"
"A personal preference." Anakin said, his voice darkening a bit. The blasters slid slowly back into their holsters and many Rebels looked up at him in awe.
Many of them were too young to remember the Jedi, unknown to the mystic powers they truly possessed.
"Well then, can we get a name?" Mon Mothma asked.
"Anakin Naberrie." Anakin said. Mon Mothma blinked in suspicion. 'Naberrie...Padmé's maiden name...and Skywalker's father's name...'
A face under the hood was briefly visible to the woman and a blue eye winked at her. Her hand flew to her heart and she gasped. 'Anakin...'
He put a finger to his mouth in a shushing gesture and he followed Luke to sit down.
"Well...now that that's over. Can we get back to business? General Solo, will that be all of your command crew?" Madine asked.
Han nodded. "That should be enough."
Luke sat beside Leia, smiling weakly. Anakin sat beside Han, and Han could've sworn the man was glaring at him. What for though, he wasn't sure.
The meeting went on, no more eventful scenes or outbursts occurring. When they finally finished and everyone filed out, Leia stopped Luke, looking into his eyes with a serious expression. "What's wrong?"
Anakin watched the both of them, wondering if Luke would tell her or not. Anakin had decided he would let Luke tell her in his own time.
"I--I'll tell you later. Promise." Luke said, giving her a smile and pressing an affectionate kiss to her hair.
Leia watched him go with a concerned glance and sighed. Anakin walked up to her then, studying her worried expression. "You okay, Your Majesty?"
Leia turned to him in surprise, noticing that he had finally taken his hood down. She also noticed that everyone was gone from the room. She narrowed her eyes. "Why do you conceal yourself from everyone but us?"
Anakin sighed. "That is a story for another time."
Leia raised an eyebrow. "You are a very interesting man."
"Why thank you. I'll take that as a compliment." Anakin said with a smirk.
Leia chuckled. "Thank you by the way. For saving Han and helping us. I never really got to properly show my gratitude."
Anakin waved it off, trying not to notice how much the woman looked like Padmé. "It was my pleasure milady."
Leia smiled then sighed. "Why exactly are you helping us? We barely know you."
Anakin bit his lip, thinking the question through. What did he plan to accomplish? Help his son kill his future self and do what exactly? Go back to the past to change a future, only to have a 50/50 chance of him succeeding?
He looked Leia in her warm brown eyes, gently putting his hands on her shoulders. Leia felt the bulk of a prosthetic, recognizing it from feeling Luke's before. She looked at him closer... Did she know him from somewhere? She could've sworn...almost as if it was a memory...
And why did he look so much like Luke?
"I just want to make things right." Anakin said truthfully, fighting tears.
Leia was the name he had decided on for a baby girl. How had he never noticed before?
"So do I." Leia said, looking curious. Something in the back of her mind was trying to tell her something, but she wasn't sure what.
Anakin cleared his throat, removing his hands. "Come on. We have a mission to get to, don't we?" Anakin smiled and threw his hood back over his head, moving out of the room.
'I may not be your father Leia, but I can tell you that yours loved you very much. Just as much as I love you, understand?'
Her adopted father's voice echoed through her head, a memory shooting back. Leia choked back a sob, missing Bail Organa so much.
So why did Anakin remind her of him? A father figure...
She shook her head and took a deep breath, leaving the war room and going to look for Han.
She'd had enough crying for a while.
