Chapter 7: NUT
After Lilin gave the directions to The Peanut Shoppe, Sylis parked the car on the curb and they got out. The store itself was small and fit the description of Shoppe, it looked old and vintage.
Piper didn't need any help opening the door as she ran right out of the car and into the store. Lilin and Sylis followed after her at a walking pace. They stood side by side. "I'm sorry for your loss," Sylis whispered as he opened the door.
"It's okay," Lilin said back, giving him a smile at the gentlemanly gesture. "I'm also sorry for your loss, however, they went."
The Peanut Shoppe reminded Sylis of a candy store. The peanuts were displayed in clear containers with small metal scopes attached to each fish bowl-like container. In the container were chocolate-covered peanuts in all different types, colors, and the like.
Piper was at the cashier who was behind the counter. She was on her tip toes and he leaned down to talk to her. "Old papa, what I want is a bag of grandparent peanuts." The man was an elderly man and had a kind smile. "A Gentex nut?" he said after hearing what she had to say and thinking about what she truly wanted. He had his head resting on his hand so he stood up straight and began to think about the particular peanut. "Let me go find some for you, meanwhile you and your mama..." He paused when he saw Mr. Youngblood. Sylis saw the pause and grabbed Lilin's hand. It wasn't because he was scared of the man, but the gentleman gave him a bad vibration. Lilin didn't seem to mind as she just smiled. "...you all can go make a mixed nut bag."
Piper grabbed a bag from a table near the storage containers, while Sylis dropped Lilin's hand since the elderly man was out of sight. Lilin shook her head at her child. "Not that one, Piper. I think Sylis would like to get some nuts as well. Put that one back and get the bigger one."
Piper did as she was told and the adults walked closer to her so that they could choose their own favorite type of nut. "What should we choose first?" Sylis asked first because he had never done this type of thing before nonetheless been to a peanut shoppe before.
Lilin and Piper smiled as they both exclaimed, "Peanuts!" With the medium-sized bag that Piper had in her hands, they went to a clear container. Inside were peanuts that still had their shells on. She took the reflective scoop and took three scoops for the elongated, shelled peanuts.
After placing the metallic scooper on the container Piper reached into the bag and pulled out one of the shells. "I love peanuts." She was about to break open the shell when Lilin swiftly pluck it from her tiny finger.
"Not now," she said. "We have to pay for them first." Piper glared at the woman as if mentally cursing her for stealing her favorite thing in the whole world. "Now, let's add some pine nuts into the mix. You know they are my favorite. Meanwhile, Sylis can think of what kind of nut he wants."
"What kind of nut is my favorite?" Sylis thought to himself.
As they went to the pine nuts which were small light-colored nuts that looked like rice or Rice Krispies (and the nuts that came out of pine trees Sylis would later find out). Piper explained why her mother liked that particular type of nut. "Mama likes these because she travels the world and loves warm climate and me." Lilin held the bag open as Piper spooned in the nuts. They added a difference to the insides of the bag, making it more interesting to gaze at. "You can tell a lot about a person based on what kind of nut they like. For example, I think that you would like almonds because they are hard as your heart." She then turned to her mother and asked innocently with a smile on her lips, "Mama, what nut would he like?"
This confused Sylis because why would she ask that if she just said her suggestion out loud? Was she just asking to get her mother's input or something else?
Lilin thought for a bit, closing the mixed nuts bag in her hand. "Humm... I don't know." She looked down at Piper. "What do you think?"
Sylis just gave them both a confusing look. They could understand each other with no words, but in this comment, they couldn't understand each other when she was talking right next to her. This made no sense and Lilin could see the confusion on his face.
"Is there something wrong?" Lilin asked. She looked around. "Is there a threat nearby?"
Sylis shook his head. "No, no. There isn't really anything wrong, but I'm just concerned about that cashier. He seems...off...to me."
Lilin laughed it off. "Oliver isn't a threat. He's just weird like us. We have known him well ever since we found out about The Peanut Shoppe which was when Piper was a toddler and barely able to eat any nuts."
"Oh, okay," was all Sylis said, regarding the information he got.
"Piper, how about you get your nuts next," Lilin suggested.
"I thought Piper liked peanuts," Sylis queried the lady.
"Well, we all like peanuts, but our favorite type of but is different," Lilin said as if that was an explanation enough.
"My favorite nut is the cashew because I like my normal life," said Piper as she poured in a scoop full of the nut.
"Well, I think that was enough time for you to think of what kind of nut you want to add to our mixed nut bag. So—" Lilin paused, eyeing him. "What will it be?"
"I guess I'll choose the almond." Before Sylis finished his sentence Piper already dashed to a particular compartment. Inside held the hard nuts with the darkish skin.
Lilin joined her daughter who already had the scooper in her hand. "Wow, it's like you already knew what he was going to say before he said it. You must be getting better." She smiled and Sylis just waited at the counter since the almonds would be the last one.
That's when the elderly man returned with a small bag of peanuts. The three of them walked to the counter and Piper placed their bag on the counter with a little help from Sylis. They grinned at each other and Sylis' chest felt a little warmer.
He rang them up with the cash register after weighing the bag of mixed nuts. "Your total is 25 dollars and 40 cents." Lilin was getting some cash from somewhere but Sylis came in and paid for the snacks with his own money. Lilin gave him a thankful smile.
Piper took the bags and they exited the shop. Sylis opened their doors for them like a doorman with a smile on his face.
When they were all in, Piper complained, "These are too heavy for me" and gave the heavy bag to Sylis.
"Thanks." They drove away back to the Cozbi house.
