Chapter 25: CLUES

The room was empty. Yes, the bed, the dresser, and all the normal furniture that one would see in a woman's bedroom were there, but as Sylis opened the dresser drawers and the closers doors he found no clothes inside.

Instead, he found a piece of paper.

Sylis grabbed the paper and examined it. It was not neatly folded, but slightly crumpled with a single fold to the side. The sides of the power were soft and on had clear markings of being ripped from a bigger sheet. He didn't think the original whole piece was important because on the small piece of paper was the following:

Li +49 30 1234567

It was an international phone number. The +49 was Germany's country code and the 30 meant it was for Berlin. The rest was like a normal German phone number.

"Who is Li?" he asked himself, looking at the two letters that made up some sort of name or codename. When he said the name out loud it reminded him of a different name. "Lee? Lee Little?" How would they have any connection? Surely they did not. But when he said Lee's surname it made him rethink his idea.

"It could just be the first two letters of someone's name." He paused. "It could stand for Lilin and Lilin's little sister, Lilith." Wait, little sister, Lee Little. Sylis stroked his chin in thought.

Maybe there was a connection after all.

He pulled out his cell phone and punched in the phone number. It rang but was never picked up. Not even a voicemail popped up and so Sylis ended the call without saying anything. He dropped the ripped paper into his pocket for safekeeping.

Nothing else looked important in the room. It was cleared to renting perfection, unlike the living room. Finally, Sylis entered Piper's room.

The room was not cleared. It still had all of the child's things and decorations. The rug and there was even a mess on the table. It looked as if Piper was making a price of art before they had rushed out and left.

Sylis got on his knees and brushed away a few of the art supplies to look at the art. It was not any masterpiece that would be hanging in an art gallery, but it was Piper's and that was all that mattered.

The picture was of him and Lilin. They were inside a place with grey walls and a lot of windows, but the windows were empty, only the pureness of the paper showing through. A table was between them and they were both sitting down, looking at each other, a smile on each one of their faces. On the top were the following words written in all caps: THE DATE The title was followed by a snowflake sticker.

Sylis' eyes looked at his name and then at Lilin's, but he missed something from the first time through. His name was fully there but Lilin's was not. A piece of the paper was torn and only showed the last three letters of her name.

That's weird.

His hand rushed into his pocket feeling the paper and something else, a cylinder object. He took both of them out. It was the piece of paper from earlier and a 9mm bullet from way earlier. He started at the bullet casing. It was from Lilin's ex or whatever he was truly now.

Sylis placed the casing back into his pocket. His main priority was finding the Cozbis. He was pretty sure that they had left him clues. Their house was filled with so many weird things from the coldness of the 13 degrees to the still warm German flag-colored mug to the Berlin, Germany international phone number to Piper's drawing. He believed that this was all connected and that they were all pointing to a message for him.

Sylis slid the torn piece of paper into the missing part of the name. It was a perfect fit. Sylis field the piece of paper so that only the 'name' showed. He placed it right next to the latter half of her name and he completed it.

"Lilin."

The piece of paper was physically connected to the drawing. This was no coincidence. Was that phone number Lilin's or Lilith's? He did not know.

Sylis shifted his attention to the title. Why was it called 'The Date'? The handwriting was not Piper's. It was definitely Lilin's. She must have planted the clue and asked Piper to draw the picture. It is weird that she made Piper do this but yet sweet at the same time that she was thinking about me even after everything that happened.

"Why is it called 'The Date' and not something else? Why would Lilin want Piper to draw this?" Sylis zoned in into the snowflake. He had seen it somewhere. It wasn't a white snowflake, no, it was blue. He had never seen a blue snowflake in real life, no one had, so it must have been a picture of one. Sylis scanned his brain using retrospection. This brain stopped at a picture.

An air conditioner.

He saw a snowflake on the Cozbis air conditioner. It was because the air was 13 degrees and was so cold that the snowflake icon had lit up. The date; 13. Did it mean that they are leaving on the 13th? That's today! No wonder that everything is more or less packed up.

But where are they going? To Lilith? Sylis absentmindedly flipped over the piece of paper. How did he not notice this? On the back was written 'Ber' with another snowflake but this was written in blue ink. There was also a smiling face next to the snowflake as well.

Sliding the paper next to its whole made the word Berlin. "They are going to Berlin, Germany today."
But when and using what type of transportation?

He heard the front door unlock and open; Sylis stood up. Could it be? Sylis walled with sped with a touch of desperation in his steps. But it wasn't Lilin and Piper, but instead Das.

"The owner said that the Cozbis had moved out this morning," Das informed him, as he read from a piece of paper in his hand. The Indian gave the paper to Sylis. He didn't have to read it, he trusted Das. Plus, he didn't think that the paper would help him at all. "So...did you find anything?"

Sylis nodded his blond head as he walked to Piper's room. Das silently followed him. "I figured that Lilin and Piper are going to Berlin today. The only problem I have is that I don't know how they are getting there or when they will be there—if they are not already there in the first place. Plus what are they going after they get there?" His brain answered the question for him. "Probably to Lilith, that would be my best guess."

He picked up the small piece first then Piper's drawing. Carefully he folded it and placed it in his pocket. The same pocket that held the bullet casing from Lilin's mystery person. This time he felt the bullet and switch the papers for the small cylinder-like object. He inspected it and his stomach twisted.

"I think I am going to be sick." His voice was calm, but his hand covered his mouth as though the man was about to dispel some bodily fluids.

"I-I'll go check the medicine cabinet and see if they left anything there!" Das quickly ran the short distance to the bathroom and swung open the moored cabinet that showed his emotion-filled face. He paused when he opened it. "Sylis, sir, I think I found something important."
