Chapter 23: OLIVER

Sylis rushed to get back to the crime scene. It all made sense now, the phone call with Oliver. He was giving him a secret code of sorts. Lilin and Piper were packing and they were going to leave!

Sylis drove like a madman through the streets. The birds just started to wake up and sing their songs—so were the vehicles. They honked their honks at the crazy driver who barely stayed in his own lane, but what he was doing was more important than street safety, he was keeping up with his side of a contract.

Another thing that added to this conclusion was that their balcony was empty. Sylis had only gone there one time, but he remembered all the house plants, making the small, dingy balcony look more like a tiny jungle. But when he went to Oliver's the balcony was clear of any signs of life, plant or human.

And how could he forget about Piper? The girl who could talk to him at any time she wished, yet had not? At first, he thought it was just her giving him space—he did disrespectfully ask her to after all —but now he was beginning to think that the little peanut had left and could not talk to him.

Sylis arrived at the scene of the crime, making a dramatic entrance (he literally parked perpendicular to the road, blocking the entire street) but he did not care. He ran towards the group who were shocked and surprised to witness such a flashy entrance. He gently pushed through the small crowd to the front. That's when the officers regained their ability to react and stopped him.

"I'm sorry sir, but civilians cannot get too close to the crime scene. I need you to step away." The officer put her hands inform if Sylis, slowly pushing him back. She looked old and had an angry face on as if she was already tired of having to push people back.

"Let him through!" A voice yelled. "He is one of us."

Sylis turned to see Das, running while waving an arm in the sky. Sylis looked back at the lady and she pulled something under her breath before letting him through.

"I need to see the body," was his only command. A different police officer looked at him then when down to the body bag and opened a side. Sylis squatted down and looked at the person inside.

He sighed with relief.

The victim was a man.

Sylis stood up and took in a deep breath, his arm over his head and playback sort of way. The Cozbi's we're still alive.

But wait,

Who died?

Das reached Sylis and showed the cops his detective I.D. He was the person who was going to give him the answer. "His name is Oscar Cozbi and he lived on the first floor. Apparently, he was the owner of a nearby peanut shoppe or something."

This posed a lot of questions, but first, he needed to check. The policeman had already zipped up the bag, but he didn't care. Sylis zipped open the bag just enough to see him, Oliver.

He was taken hold of by the female officer and pulled from the scene of the crime. She was yelling at him for 'contaminating the body' but he didn't touch the elder nor did he listen to her. Das followed suit if not embarrassed for the both of them.

When he was out of the crowd, Sylis walked in circles thinking and thinking.

Three things: First name, last name, and why him? First, the name of Oscar or Oliver. Why did Lilin call him Oliver if his real name was Oscar? Was his memory failing him or was it some sort of nickname?

Sylis turned around.

No, not a link name. Why would that be a nickname? We are thinking about Lilin here. She is the one who called him Oliver. If I ever called him Oliver he was simply continuing the façade. Façade.

Sylis turned around again.

Wait, Lilin and Oliver we're in cahoots right? Oliver was the one who hinted at the Cozbi's leaving and he has the surname Cozbi...that brings me to my second point of querying. The surname of Cozbi.

Sylis turned around again.

Is he married to Lilin? Sylis took up the ring he had in his pocket and stared at the three little diamonds, focusing mostly on the left gemstone. Past. Marriage is a possibility, but I don't want to rule it as the only one. Oliver was using a fake name for Lilin, Piper, and I. Is it because Lilin is an assassin? How did the two meet?

Stop getting distracted!

He tried around again.

Oliver is his fake name or at least one of his fake names. Lilin is probably a fake name as well and so could the surname of Cozbi. I can understand why she would want a fake name—so she wouldn't get killed.

He turned around again.

Oliver and Lilin were obviously close so he might have let her use his real last name and her fake surname. Is this enough to prove that Oliver and Lilin are married?

Please say no.

Sylis had his doubts about him being incorrect because he remembered that Piper had called the man 'Old Papa'. Papa is father and old could be for his good age.

—But would this connection to an assassin cause Oliver's death? Was he an assassin too? That brings me to my third point of questioning, why did he die, and more specifically, why did Shadow kill him?

He turned around.

Assassins kill people all the time. Maybe she killed someone and now she is being hunted down as revenge. A life for a life. But why did Oliver die? Did he get in the way?

Sylis turned but was stopped by a pair of hands on his shoulders. He blinked and looked down at the person holding him from drilling a line into the street. "SYLIS, what's wrong!?" Das yelled, shaking the tall man a bit. "You are acting crazy and I'm a little scared, myself." The Indian's voice decrescendo quickly as gazes flew toward him like darts.

Sylis used the distraction to slip the wedding ring onto his left, ring finger. "Das, I need you to listen to me carefully." Now Sylis had his hands on Das' shoulders. The German had a sharp and heavy tone like an obsidian boulder.

"My wife is going to die."
