Chapter 1: DAS

Sylis Penn Youngblood was in his office at the firm when a knock came on his door. "Come in," he said. He recognized the knock. It was from the firm's intern. The guy's name was Das and was the servant of all the detectives in the building.

He was wearing an aqua suit that matched Sylis' suit. Aqua was Mr. Youngblood's favorite color, it matched his eyes. Das stood near the door while saying this: "Boss wants to see you." And as quickly as he came, the intern left hearing his name being called by another employee or the likes of one.

Sylis stood up and walked to the door, passing his still-closed laptop and piece of paper. Mr. Youngblood was calm as he took the short walk to his boss' office. The man was short and also short-tempered. He was the stereotypical boss man who smoked cigars and never wore his suit jacket, letting his clip-on suspenders be visible for all to see. Sylis knocked on the ajar door and stepped inside. "You wanted to see me." It wasn't a question, but a statement explaining why he was there.

"Yes, Sylis, please take a seat," Richard Uzair Meyers said motioning to a sofa similar to the sofas in Sylis' office, but these were not as comfortable. Mr. Youngblood took a seat, he wasn't worried and his face was like it always was, impassive. Mr. Meyers took a drag from his lit cigar and blew it towards the open window; he then folded his hand on his desk. "Sylis, do you know why you're here?" he asked as if he were a principal asking a student why they are in trouble.

"I do," responded Mr. Youngblood. He gave the minimum amount of information. Not because he was scared—no, Sylis was not scared, he looked into Richard Meyers' green eyes asserting his dominance in the room—he did it because he never gives out more than he has to.

"Then you understand why this is unacceptable," Richard said. The boss man's hypothetical superior wall crashed down as he became just another detective and a bad one for that. "You are one of the best detectives in our firm and you haven't solved one case in two months—no, you haven't even gotten one in two months." Richard took a draw from his fat cigar and was so rushed that he blew half of the smoke towards the window and the other half inside the room. He threw his arms into the air. "What do you want me to do? I like you; you're good at your job, but if you don't finalize a case soon, I'll have to fire you and I don't want to do that."

Mr. Youngblood stood up never once letting go of Mr. Meyers' gaze. "I know," he said, but the vibrations he was giving off added, "I didn't need to come here to hear it from you. You are a waste of my time and the air I breathe."

Sylis walked back to his office and sat down. He picked up the piece of paper on his desk and then picked up the phone. After entering the phone number to call Miss Lilin Cozbi. He didn't give time for the receiver to respond before he said, "I have accepted your case. Meet me at my office after hours today."

There was silence on the other end. Sylis waited and listened. He could hear someone breathing come from the other end. Then the phone was handed to someone else. "Hello?" It was Miss Cozbi. 'I must have been talking to Miss Cozbi's daughter, Piper. She doesn't seem to talk at all,' Sylis noted in his head. He repeated what he said to her daughter adding or subtracting anything. He didn't even clarify who she was talking to.

"Thank you, Mr. Youngblood, thank you so much." Sylis then ended the call.
