Chapter 1
3 years ago Y/n had learnt what it meant to lose that which he held most precious to the grimm. After training Y/n one last time his parents were sent on a recon mission in southern vale after reports of a large number of grimm kept popping up. When they got there they were met with a slightly larger pack of beowolves than normal by a cave and decided that was the cause of the reports before moving in to clear them out. As they approached the beowolves one of them let out a deafening howl. In a matter of seconds Y/ns parents found themselves surrounded by hundreds of grimm pouring in from the cave and forest. They had never seen so many grimm in one place and they were stuck in the middle of it. They knew what the outcome would be but steeled themselves for the battle to come regardless. Both sides let out an almighty battle cry as the hunter's final battle begun. Locals that witnessed the battle sent for more hunter's to help but they arrived too late. Y/ns parents had fought a valiant battle and fell but not before taking over three-quarters of the grimm with them. Reports made about the incident suggested that there were likely around 400 grimm involved that day, varying from Beowolves to Ursai to King taijitu. Their sacrifice and contribution to wiping out that horde saved many lives and they were remembered as heroes by many. But Y/n, their 13 year old son was left to fend for himself and the news of his parent's death hit hard. For the next 3 years Y/n travelled throughout vale training and clearing out any grim he came across.

Y/n pov
I was rushing through forever fall on my way to beacon academy after receiving an invitation from Ozpin which I was more than happy to accept. But there was 1 problem, I had gotten it 2 months after the start of the first year meaning I was beyond late. So as much as I wanted to stop to admire the breath-taking scenery, I couldn't. To make matters worse I couldn't get a ride straight to vale so I had to go to a town north of forever fall and make my way to it from there. I was relying on the fact that Ozpin was a family friend otherwise there was nothing stopping him from turning me down and sending me away. I continued to dart through the trees as fast as I could until I saw an opening in the treeline, I burst out of the forest and brought myself to a grinding halt at the stunning view of my new home, Beacon academy, in the distance. I was excited about getting to attend such a prestigious academy but I had my doubts. For the past 3 years I had mostly been fighting alone so I wasn't sure how I would be in a team. But I knew that what I could do on my own was limited and I'd already had a few very close calls fighting on my own where having a team would have made it a breeze. I rid myself of my doubts before making the last dash to the academy. I burst through the school gates creating a strong gust of wind in my wake causing many of the students around me to scream and shout in surprise. They all turned to see me looking up at the academy in awe and began to talk about who I might be or what my problem is.
Rubys pov
"W-what was that?!" I shouted in panic from the sudden gust of wind. "What makes you think I know?" Weiss replied sharply, coughing from the dust cloud the wind kicked up. "I think he's the cause" Blake said pointing to a boy wearing a tattered black cloak encasing his body. "Where did he come from?" I asked confused. "I don't know but I think he's cute." Yang said checking him out. "Do you think he's here to join the academy?" I asked slightly excited by the idea of a new student. "I highly doubt it you dolt we're already 2 months into the year, hes probably just some tourist excited to see the academy." Weiss bluntly said. "I'm with Ruby on this one he doesn't seem like some random tourist to me. Besides when do we ever get tourists here?" Blake argued backing me up. "uuugh whatever let's just get to class or we're going to be late again" Weiss said storming off as the bell went off. We all caught up to her only for her to suddenly stop making us all bump into each other.
Y/n Pov
I was snapped out of my awe struck daze by the sound of the bell ringing and I quickly realised that I had no idea where Ozpins office was. That's when I noticed a group of girls making their way to the building so I quickly jumped in front of them hoping they will tell me where I need to go. "WHA- What do you think you're doing!?" the girl in white shouted at me startled. Her sudden stop made the other girls knock into her making her even more annoyed. "Sorry to scare you like that but I really need some help, can you tell me where Ozpins office is please?" I asked politely but the girl in white was more interested in trying to give me a lecture. "Do you not have any manners? What civilised person would just jump in front of someone like that?" she kept going on so I looked to the girl in red and she was happy to give me directions. "Sorry about Weiss, she gets like that sometimes." The girl in red said as the girl in yellow pulled the girl in white away. "If you want to find Ozpins office then just head through those doors and take a right, there's an elevator at the end that takes you straight to his office." She happily explained. "Thanks red, you're a life saver, I'll see you later!" "You're welcome!" I heard her shout as I made my way into the building and up to Ozpins office.

I heard the elevator ding as the doors opened revealing a big office, I saw Ozpin sat facing out of the window with his back to me. I was about to speak but he beat me to it, "It's good to see you again Y/n." Ozpin said with a small smile as he turned to face me. "You too Ozpin, It's been a while" "Indeed it has, So, Why are you so late?" He said in a more serious tone making me slightly nervous. "Im really sorry Ozpin the letter arrived late but I travelled here as fast as I could. I was travelling at the time so that's probably why it took so long to get to me" I tried to explain getting more nervous by the second. "Its fine Y/n, I had a feeling that was the case" he said chuckling at how much I was panicking. "Normally I would turn a student away in a situation like this but I made a promise to your parents to give you a place here and I plan to stick to it." He said with a warm smile. "Thanks Ozpin it means a lot..."I said slightly saddened by the mention of my parents. "Anyway with that being said you need to remember that while you attend my academy you will treat me as your headmaster and not a family friend. I can't be giving you any special treatment, I'm already breaking my own rules by letting you in, understood?" Ozpin said once again getting serious. "Yes Mr.Ozpin" I said making him smile again. "Good, now as you know new students usually go through initiation to show they are skilled enough to get in but I already know how capable you are so I won't make you do it if you don't want to." He said. "I'd rather just get settled in, if any students make a fuss about it just tell them I said they're free to challenge me to see for themselves." I said which Ozpin seemed more than happy with"Hm Alright but make sure any matches you have are supervised by a teacher ok? I don't want to hear about you getting into unauthorised fights with other students." Ozpin said. "Don't worry Ozpi- I mean MR.Ozpin, I'll be on my best behaviour." I said jokingly. "Now that's out of the way, let's get you to class shall we?" He said as he got out of the chair and guided me to my classes.
This is a new story I wanted to try, I'm not sure when I will update it next. For now I want to see what sort of response I get from this first chapter as I might still make some changes to it and I have another story I'm doing at the same time. So I tell me what you think of this first chapter. And sorry in advance if there is some bad spelling and grammar, sitting up until 6:15 in the morning can do that to you... Thanks for reading and see ya!
