Sorrow
It was quiet on the ride back to Beacon. Snow had Nightmare's lifeless body in her arms, Luna was on one of the seats still crying, and Regret was about to answer his scroll as he was receiving a call from David.
"Jeez, took you long enough to answer."
"Sorry mate, I was in the forests this past week clearing out Grimm infestations. So what did you need to talk about that's so important that you needed to call me 10 times in a row within a spam of 5 minutes?"
"We... have an emergency, can you get to Beacon?"
"Well I'm at a noodle joint in the middle of the city. I can be there within 10 minutes. What's happened?" Regret couldn't say it. He knew he couldn't without his voice cracking from sobbing.
"I... think you need to see for yourself."
"Dude, you know I don't like being kept in the dark. What the bloody hell happened while I was gone?" David became more demanding to know what was going on. He figured something was bad.
"Look I can't explain right now, just please... get here when you can."
"Fine. I'll see you then." The call ends and Regret couldn't stop himself from crying again. Sorrow filled the air, nothing could replace it. Snow was still staring at his face. What she would give, just to hear her brothers voice again. The pilot went on the speaker.
"We've arrived." The side hatch opened and the first thing Regret saw was team RWBY running torwards them.
"I got this." Regret volunteered to tell them what happened.
"What happened?" Ruby was the first to ask with her friends following behind her. "Regret? What's wrong?"
He stood in silence, looking at the ground trying to fight back tears. He thought it'd be best if they saw. As soon they went to see the canopy of the ship, they were horrified. They saw Snow holding him... he didn't breathe. They knew he had died, they just didn't want to accept it. Ruby cried uncontrollably and climbed inside to get closer to look at the person she loved.
"Oh... Nightmare.... oh god... h-how did this happen?" She could barely be understood with her voice cracking.
"Trust me Ruby.... you don't want to know." Snow told her. Instead of pushing, she just let it go. She probably didn't want to know. She closed her eyes and touched foreheads with him. "Please... come back to us.... Nightmare please.... I don't know what I'm going to do without you...." Everyone watched, not doing anything until Weiss climbed up and hugged her from behind. Blake couldn't bare to watch, she wrapped her arms around Yang who had her face covered with tears. Suddenly Luna could hear music getting louder. "Does... does anyone else hear Breaking Benjamin?" Yang went to go check out where that's coming from and saw David drive up in a Warthog, turn it off and step out. The spartan stood tall in grey and blue Mjolnir Mark 5B armor, commonly worn by spartan 3's during the Fall of Reach.
"Hey guys, Regret said it was an emergency. What's happened?" The look on his face became worrisome. Yang prompted him to follow and when he looked inside he quickly got in the ship to see if it was true.
"No no no.... Sean?" Tears took over his eyes and started to cry at the sight of his fallen teammate. They had been through so much together, only to see it come to an end. In the process he reached by his collar to retrieve something that was on his neck. He pulled his dog tags off his body and looked at them for a second before putting them around his neck. Sadness turned into anger as he said something. "Who... did... this?"
"A couple of rebels back when they encountered you during the war. And before you ask where they are, they're dead... I killed them." If it weren't for Regret executing them, there would be blood on David's knife and Ruby's scythe, Cresent Rose. They would've went out to kill them in cold blood for killing Nightmare. Ozpin came out when he saw that two teams were gathered at the dropship. He saw the body of one of his students. He was always good at containing himself. He's no stranger to loss.
"I'm... so sorry for your loss... all of you. What a talented young man, he was taken from us far too early. It's getting late we should get inside." Everyone went back to their dorms. They never came out for a couple days and missed their classes. The teachers understood what they were going through. Team JNPR would often visit them to try and comfort them as they were going through a tremendous loss. Qrow came by the teachers break room where Ozpin was at and they engaged in a conversation.
"It's terrible it had to be this way... I just didn't think it would happen so soon, Oz."
"Have you been to speak with your nieces yet?"
"Yeah... I did. Ruby is torn up about this more than everyone else, well except for NLSR. After all, they were a thing." Qrow went through the mini fridge to look for the whiskey he used to fill his flask. "Have you seen my liquor anywhere?"
"No I haven't. Why is it gone?"
"Yeah... I can't think of anyone who would take it...." His voice began to trail off realizing who might've taken it.
"Is... everything alright Qrow?"
Qrow let out a sigh before speaking again. "God damnit David..."
"Mr. Anderson?"
"Yeah, I'll go look for him."
Qrow found David by himself in the cafeteria with the whiskey that Qrow had. He went inside without trying to startle him but David heard him come in.
"Hey Qrow.... I'm assuming this was yours?" He said as he waved the bottle around.
"Yeah... but I understand what you're going through. So drink as much as you want. I can always buy more. Before you down it completely, can I fill up my flask?"
"Sure... go ahead." David drank from the glass with a big ice cube in the middle.
"You're not the only one who's lost people close to you. I have my fair share of losses."
"How so?"
"Well... my sister went AWOL, Taiyang went depressed and Summer is dead. And somehow, I, the raging alcoholic, am the only fully functional adult on the team." Qrow had tried his best to cheer him up but wasn't working.
"Thanks for the effort Qrow, but it's not working."
"I know.... the funeral is coming up in a couple days, might wanna stay sober until then. Catch you later soldier." Qrow left him to himself. That only made David think to himself when he called him soldier.
"Right... soldier... more like a killing machine more than anything." He poured another shot of whisky in his glass and quickly gulped it down.
