Quest 3: Hunter 101

The Monster Hunters have completed their first successful hunt. Though when returning back to Beacon the students have seen their incredible skills and fighting prowess. Now the leader of the hunters Leonidas must teach a class of Hunstman and Huntresses on how to survive Monsters. Now with that said, let the quest begin.

-

Classroom

It was a new day in Beacon Academy and a lot of people were seen in the classroom ready to know more about the monsters and hunters after seeing a video of their exploits. While everyone was waiting a man with gray hair and a big gray mustache came to the classroom.

Everyone then looked at the man and some groaned at him.

Ruby: It's Professor Port, what is he doing here?

Blake: Hopefully, it is not teaching.

Weiss: I'm sure he's just here to explain the new schedule. Him and Pyrrha's brother are sharing a classroom after all.

Yang: Well that's good to know.

Yang then hears footsteps and turned to see Pyrrha and the rest of her team.

Pyrrha: Hello, Yang, are you excited about today's class?

Yang: I am sure am Pry, what about you guys? Ren, Nora, Jaune you excited about how to kill Monsters?

Nora: Yep! I want to learn how to break monster legs!

Ren: Nora calm yourself and I am very intrigued how a hunter is different than a Huntsman.

Jaune: Same here but I want to ask how they managed to survive that fight I saw some of their auras break but they still kept going.

Pyrrha: Trust me Jaune Hunters their training is really different than ours.

Everyone agreed and they then hear more footsteps coming and turned to see it was Velvet.

Velvet: Hello, do you mind if I sit here?

Weiss: Velvet? Of course, did your sister make you take this class?

Velvet nodded at Weiss.

Velvet: She said it would be a good idea if I ever encounter one of those monsters.

Velvet then takes a seat and everyone then becomes quiet and Professor Port started to speak.

Professor Port: Hello, students I am here to inform you that there will be a schedule change. For those asking why it is due to the new problem the kingdoms are facing and to explain that problem allow me to introduce your newest professor, Professor Nikos now please give a warm welcome to him.

As Professor Port said that Leonidas walked into the classroom. He wore a button up blue dress shirt with a red tie that had the Guild's Crest in black on the end of it. He wore black dress pants and matching black dress shoes. The strange thing however was on his back was his Switch Axe and around his waist were the pouches he had with him during the hunt. Leonidas walked up to the desk before setting his Switch Axe into a holder next to it before facing the students.

Leonidas: Good morning everyone! My name is Leonidas Nikos, do not call me Mr. Nikos, that is my father. Do not call me Professor Nikos because that makes me feel old. Professor Leonidas, Professor Leo, or just Professor L will do just fine.

All the other students nodded and let Leonidas continue speaking.

Leonidas: Now then, since I have you prisoner for the next 2 to 3 hours I would like to explain how this class will work. I could sit here and drone on about whatever topic I see fit, but that is boring. I wish to encourage discussion in my lectures so that all of you are engaged in the topics. So before I write on the board the topic I've selected for our first class, does anyone have any questions about the taste of the Hunter lifestyle you all received the other day? There are no stupid questions, so please don't be scared.

When Leonidas said that a random student then raised his hand which Leonidas pointed to him which the student then spoke.

Random Student: Professor Leo how were you able to stand the full might of that bear monster?

Leonidas: Ah yes, all of you are used to having your Aura shield you from damage. Well you see young man, Monsters cannot be blocked by Aura, for unknown reasons they are unaffected by it. Us Monster Hunters require an incredibly high pain tolerance to do our jobs. That includes being set on fire, poisoned, blown up, electrocuted, drenched in water, trampled, clawed, and chewed on just to name a few. The armor helps of course.

When Leonidas said that everyone was shocked and also pale as fighting monsters now made the students cower in fear. The student then sits back down and Leonidas continues his lecture.

Leonidas: Now before we move on, I'm sure some of you noticed that vial of green substance I consumed, yes? That is what we call a potion, it is made with Herbs and Blue Mushrooms from the Outer Reach. Our farming Palicoes are growing them as we speak so we have a steady supply.

The students then looked confused which Blake then raised her hand and Leonidas pointed to her and she asked a question.

Blake: What are Palicoes?

Leonidas: Palicoes are of the Felyne race talking cats that live alongside humans and Wyverians. They tend to refer to us as "Meowster" but it is less of a master and servant relationship and more of a loyal comrade relationship. If Hunters must tackle a Quest alone, their Palico companions will happily charge into battle alongside them, supporting their Hunter with healing, offensive, and defensive abilities and tools they developed.

The other students look at Leonidas if he was joking but he then whistles which they hear running sounds and saw a cat on two legs wearing armor and holding a shovel appear in the class.

Palico: You called Meowster?

Leonidas: Thank you for coming on such short notice. I was hoping you could explain to the class some of the techniques you and your brethren use to support us?

Palico: We Palicoes may not be as strong as our Hunter Meowsters, but we find our own ways of helping them in the field. We gather useful items, set down shock traps, distract the monster when our Hunter needs time to heal or simply a moment to regroup. We develop special gadgets like a healing horn, small tank, and an explosive rocket to catch monsters off guard. Hunters can have many Palicoes, we'll even be sent off in teams of 4 to locales to gather items and parts from large monsters while our Hunter is busy with other work.

The students looked at the Palico in shock but then suddenly all the girls started screaming in glee at the sight of the talking cat.

Ruby: It is so cute!

Nora: I want to hug it!

The girl students took out their scrolls and took pictures of the Palico who then smiled and did a play cat gesture that made the girls cheer more.

Leonidas: Yes as you can see there is a lot that goes into a successful Quest. Us Monster Hunters would be hopelessly lost without all those in the Guild who support us.

Ren then raised his hand and was called upon by Leonidas who then asked a question.

Ren: What is it like at the guild Professor Leonidas?

Leonidas: A fantastic question young man. The Guild is an organization that is the governing force within the Outer Reach. Branches of it extend to all corners and there's a guild official in even the smallest and humblest of villages. There are no Human guild masters of any of the branches, all are Wyverians. Their long lifespans of hundreds of years and their natural synchronization with nature makes them the perfect leaders to ensure the balance of nature. Every branch has a role to play, us Hunters are simply the ones that handle the dirty work.

Ren then sat back down and Nora wanted to ask a question and Leonidas pointed to her.

Nora: What is it like breaking monster legs?

Leonidas: While I cannot confirm that there has ever been a case of a monster's legs getting broken by a Hunter. We tend to target parts that can be broken or severed off. For instance my Switch Axe is incredibly effective at cleaving a Monster's tail off. Hammers are good at breaking horns and scales. Of course we have other tools at our disposal that lets us deal devastating blows to the creatures we hunt.

The other students became intrigued except for Ruby who was drooling with anticipation and then stood up and raised her hand and Leonidas pointed to her to ask a question.

Ruby: How many different kinds of weapons are there?

Leonidas: This actually let's me Segway into a piece of information for today's topic, wonderful question Miss Rose. Us Monster Hunters have a total of 14 Weapon types, 11 being Blademaster, 3 being Gunner. While I promise to have a dedicated class or two on them I will list them off. Greatsword, Sword & Shield, Dual Blades, Longsword, Hunting Horn, Hammer, Lance, Gunlance, Insect Glaive, Switch Axe, Charge Blade, Bow, Light Bowgun, and Heavy Bowgun. You probably saw that energy explosion my Switch Axe created. It was not Dust, but a power phial. Weapons forged from certain monsters will be imbued with one of the 5 elements Monsters are known to wield.

Weiss then decided to raise her hand and Leonidas pointed to her to ask a question.

Weiss: What are the 5 elements, Professor Leonidas?

Leonidas: Wonderful Question Miss Schnee, allow me to write something on the board while I answer you.

Leonidas walked over to the whiteboard as he began writing a list of what looked to be names.

Leonidas: The 5 elements are Fire, Water, Thunder, Ice, and the most mysterious of all Dragon. All of them are powerful in their own right, and all can give a Hunter's weapon an additional bite. Or inflict a Hunter with terrible blights.

Jaune then raised his hand and Leonidas pointed to him to ask a question.

Jaune: What is blight Professor Leonidas?

Leonidas: Blights are afflictions that monsters can leave on Hunters. Fire Blight is as simple as being set on fire, WaterBlight drenched our armor making our stamina decrease faster as we run given the additional weight. Thunder Blight leaves are body statically charged increasing the likelihood that physical blows will have us seeing stars. Ice Blight similar to Water Blight will cause a severe decrease in stamina due to the frostbite all over. Finally DragonBlight is the worst: it strips our weapons of their elemental properties until it wears off, and makes dealing critical blows impossible.

Jaune then paled and sat back down as the thought of getting one of the worst blights imaginable scared him.

Leonidas: Now then, I would like for all of you to take a look at the list I have written on the board. What are these you might ask? These are the Monster Classes the Guild has created that all monsters fall under. Now I want you all to read over them and when you find one that interests you, please ask about it!

The students looked at the board as they read over the list, which was surprisingly large. The list read: Neopteron, Temnoceran, Bird Wyvern, Flying Wyvern, Piscine Wyvern, Carapaceon, Amphibian, Fanged Beast, Leviathan, Snake Wyvern, Brute Wyvern, Fanged Wyvern, and Elder Dragon.

A random student then raised their hand and Leonidas pointed to them to ask a question.

Random Student: What is Elder Dragon Professor Leonidas?

Leonidas's upbeat nature was replaced by a deadly serious one as he looked at the class with a look that could be compared to staring into the abyss.

Leonidas: Do you really want to know?

The random student felt scared but nodded which Leonidas

Leonidas: Elder Dragon is a rather unique and mysterious classification. Unlike other monster categories, they share no physical or biological traits amongst them.

Random student: Why...is that Professor Leonidas?

Leonidas: Elder Dragons defy typical monster classification, are incredibly mysterious, and reside outside of the standard ecosystem. To quote one of the Wyverian Researchers that study Elder Dragons that I asked a similar question to. We've taken to using the term Elder Dragon for any creature that defies ordinary classification, but I suppose you could call them a type of phenomenon: disasters, cataclysms, living, breathing forces of nature.

All of the students paled and then Velvet then raised her hand and Leonidas pointed to her which then asked a question.

Velvet: What would happen if an Elder Dragon were to come here to Vale or any part of the 4 kingdoms?

Leonidas: For each Monster Class you ask about I shall give an example of one creature from that class. In this case allow me to introduce Amatsu, full name Amatsumagatsuchi. The Elder Dragon that is given the title by the Guild of Storm Dragon.

Leonidas then uses a projector to produce an image on the whiteboard that appears to be a drawing of a dragon.

Leonidas: Known in the folklore of Yukumo Village as an avatar of storms, Amatsu has a body closer to that of a Leviathan. It never touches the ground, but flies using the winds it conjures to float. Wherever Amatsu appears, it is accompanied by furious cyclones and horrific storms. Its power is said to outscale that of natural disasters. While peaceful in nature, Amatsu will destroy anything that dares enter its airspace. It's very presence will even cause apex predators to flee in terror. Amatsu's most fearsome attack is a powerful beam of wind and water that when impacting the ground will cut into it before releasing a torrent of water on anything in the point of impact. When Amatsu is slain, the storm that rages around it will dissipate from the area.

Everyone then cowered in fear as a dragon-like that coming to any of the kingdoms spelled out disaster.

Velvet: I think we are good on Elder Dragons Professor. So Professor, what are Snake Wyverns?

Leonidas: Snake Wyverns are Wyverns of the serpentine variety, most are small monsters, but there is one large monster in their classification along with its subspecies.

Leonidas switched out the image for one of a drawing of a snake monster, it appeared to have a row of large scales running along its body.

Leonidas: Najarala, a large predator that uses its ability to burrow through the ground to ambush prey. It has the unique ability to fire off the scales on its body as projectiles. When it rattles the large scales near its head, these vibrations cause the fired scales to explode like a sonic bomb, incapacitating prey and hunters alike. If it coils around you, a quick escape or kill is your only hope for survival.

Ren then shivers a bit as he remembers encountering a King Taijitu so fighting a Snake Wyverns was a similar experience.

Pyrrha then raised her hand and Leonidas picked her to ask a question.

Pyrrha: What is a Neopteron Professor Leonidas?

Leonidas: Ah yes one of the two insect monster classes, truly home to some of the more unique individuals.

When Leonidas said insect some of the students laugh as to how insects could be monsters until Leonidas puts up the image of a golden mantis.

Leonidas: Ahtal-Ka, given the title of Pavilion Mantis by the guild. The Male Ahtal-Ka are smaller and have the gold coloration. However a female can turn gold if she consumes enough males. Ahtal-Ka is known to be a notorious hoarder, in fact it was only recently discovered a few years ago by the Wycademy. However legends of a walking treasure were stated to attack human fortresses and raid it for the treasures within. Ahtal-Ka will use its golden threads to swing around steel girders and even throw a giant siege weapon us Hunters use against particularly large monsters at attackers known as the Dragonator. However, do you want to know the most impressive feat of this creature?

The students looked at Leonidas and they all nodded.

Leonidas: You see Ahtal-Ka is not just a hoarder for the fun of it, no she is an intelligent creature, a creature capable of building complex machinery. Using her golden threads she weaves all of the treasures she stole from human fortresses and weaves it together into a behemoth of stone and steel, a puppet that Ahtal-Ka can pilot. This Walking Treasure or the Empress's Throne as the Guild calls it leaves mass destruction in its wake and could defeat entire armies in mere minutes. The only way to defeat this puppet? Hunters must cut the threads and climb on top and disable the thread cocoons that give her control over its limbs, then attack the main control Cocoon, that's what the reports of a successful hunt said at least.

The students were all shocked but also surprised that an insect could cause that much damage and also now made them a bit more scared of insects. Yang then raised her hand and Leonidas pointed to her and she asked a question.

Yang: Professor Leonidas when you fought that bear monster what category did it fall under?

Leonidas: Arzuros, a Fanged Beast. Though Arzuros is a rather low-tier monster in most cases. It's low intelligence and predictable movement patterns make it a good hunt for rookie hunters.

Yang: Is there any more dangerous Fanged Beast besides that bear?

Leonidas started laughing at the question before he calmed down and smiled.

Leonidas: There is a monster within the classification that is in a very exclusive group of Monsters. Non-Elder Dragon Monsters that can not only fight Elder Dragons, but even defeat them.

Yang and the rest of the classroom were shocked as to what could fight and defeat an Elder Dragon. Weiss then raised her hand being very curious to know what could be an Elder Dragon.

Weiss: Professor Leonidas, what sort of Monster could even stand against these forces of nature?

Leonidas then swapped the image with one of a picture that displayed a monkey-like creature with intense red eyes and large horns on its head.

Leonidas: Rajang, a nomadic monster that is rarely spotted and survived even less so. Rajang actually hunts down Kirin, an Elder Dragon that looks like a unicorn. The Kirin can call down bolts of lightning from the sky and move as fast as lightning. Rajang does not eat the Kirin however, no it snaps the Kirin's horn off and devours it. This horn acts as a steroid, increasing Rajang's power and allowing it to fire a powerful beam of pure electricity from its mouth. Rajang, while not the most durable creature, is incredibly fast and powerful. It can plunge its fist into the ground and through sheer grip strength alone, pull out a boulder-sized piece of earth that could knock a bullhead out of the sky.

Yang: Okay, well may I ask theoretically to say a semblance that allowed you to take the force of the attack of the beast and give back be able to put that beast down?

Leonidas just looked at Yang and started laughing.

Leonidas: We'll with no armor you probably would be barely clinging to life. My father mentioned he felt all his ribs shatter when taking a blow from Rajang. Good thing potions speed up the body's recovery process. Now if say this worked, well you might piss him off, which is practically a death sentence. When enraged, Rajang's brown fur stands up and turns golden, his strength doubles and he becomes faster. If angered even further at this point, well Rajang has the ability to increase the strength in their arms and legs, this also hardens their muscles causing blades to harmlessly bounce off their arms and legs.

Yang then pales and sits back down and now might have a slight fear of Monkeys.

Leonidas: Now then we have covered a lot and we're surprisingly only halfway through our time. Now I must stress that despite their powers, the monsters we hunt are not malicious creatures bent on our destruction. They are animals that are simply trying to survive like the rest of us. Now we'll go in depth about each of these classes as time goes on. So why don't we switch gears and talk about the life of Monster Hunters shall we?

A random student raised their hand and Leonidas pointed to them and listened to their question.

Random student: What is the normal life of a Monster Hunter?

Leonidas: Well it mostly depends on what their current Hunter Rank or HR is. I am of the lowest rank which is Hunter Rank 1. Quests available to me would be mostly gathering, item delivery, small monster-slaying, and low-tier large monster hunting quests. Aside from our work as Hunters, we spend our free time as most other people do. I personally spend it crafting potions and other useful items I need for my hunts. That or I read monster encyclopedias to stay up to date on information.

Weiss then raised her hand again and was picked by Leonidas who asked another question.

Weiss: What is the highest rank of a Monster Hunter?

Leonidas: The ranking system is broken up like this. Ranks 1 to 3 are Low Rank, this is sort of easing new Hunters into their jobs. You'll always be dropped off at base camp, a box of useful supplies and maps will be in a box waiting for you. Generally, Low-Rank Quests are pretty safe to not overwhelm new hunters. Ranks 4 to 7 are High Rank, with these quests being more dangerous, it's not always safe to drop Hunters off at the camp so you and your teammates could all end up at random points in the map. Supplies won't always be readily available and will possibly be delivered later into the hunt. G-Rank however is where the best of the best end up, Quests for the most dangerous monsters can be found here. It's also where the Elder Dragon Hunts most frequently end up.

Ruby then raised her hand again and Leonidas pointed to her and she asked another question.

Ruby: What is different between the 4 kingdoms and the outer reach? Are there other kingdoms out there as well?

Leonidas: Not really, there are major cities that all have a guildhall. For instance, there is Val Harbar, a city surrounded by what could be called an ocean of sand. There are a few locations like that throughout the Outer Reach. We traverse them via Sand Ship, boats designed to sail across sand like it were water. Another notable Guild Hall is Port Tanzia near the fishing village of Moga. Then there is the Wycademy where the Guild's top researchers gather and work together. They even have three airships that have a quest board, blacksmith, eatery, and even a G-Rank Guild Hall all on board those three ships. For something more secluded, there is the village of Kamura. The steel they mine makes the best blades, although like all places they all have their own issues with monsters. Of course, there's where my team and I came from Dundorma, the home to the Hunter's Guild Headquarters.

Pyhrra then raised her hand and Leonidas pointed to her and she asked a question.

Pyrrha: What are the people like over there, Professor Leonidas?

Leonidas: I'm glad you asked, all of the major cities and small villages have their own cultures, folklore, legends, specialties, and of course ways of hunting monsters.

Ren then raised his hand and Leonidas pointed to him and listen to his question.

Ren: How many styles of hunting are there Professor Leonidas?

Leonidas: Well let's see, at Port Tanzia and Moga since they're surrounded by so much water and a lot of monsters tend to be aquatic hunters are expected to combat them underwater. Hunters train to hold their breath for around 5 to 8 minutes. They also carry oxygen bottles to get a breath. Where I'm from they invented mounting. Basically, if we knock a monster over with an aerial attack, we cling to its back while stabbing it with our carving knife until it toppled over from flailing around, this was adopted universally. In the New World, they use arm-mounted launchers called slingers to fire items at monsters. Now Kamura is pretty crazy in their hunting, they use creatures called Wire Bugs that are incredibly strong to use their silk as a sort of midair grappling hook. These can be combined with their weapons for what they call Silkbind Attacks. They also created their own form of mounting called Wyvern Riding, using the Wire Bug's silk to puppeteer a monster and temporarily use its strength to combat other monsters. Then there's the Wycademy Hunters who have Hunting Styles that give unique attack patterns and combos to weapons along with powerful Hunter Arts.

All the other students looked at each other and were very intrigued by the hunters' lifestyle but Weiss then raised her hand yet again and Leonidas picked her and she asked another question.

Weiss: I have to ask how come the Outer Reach Technology is less advanced than ours? I mean surely you would have reached the same technological advances as us.

Leonidas winced at that comment, but nodded his head in understanding.

Leonidas: It wasn't always like that, the Ancient Civilization from thousands of years ago was the most advanced civilization in existence, until the incident that humbled humanity and shook it to its core. The Switch Axe, Charge Blade, and Dragonator are some of the remains of that civilization's technology we were able to recreate from ones found at ruins.

Weiss and the rest of the class were shocked at this information and Jaune raised his hand who then asked a question which Leonidas listened to.

Jaune: What could cause your civilization to be rocked to its core? Did you go through a war like us?

Leonidas just looks at Jaune and starts laughing at that comment for a moment before turning serious.

Leonidas: War? I suppose that's what it was called in historical accounts, in reality it was a slaughter. Humanity thought it was above nature, treated even the most powerful monsters as simple playthings. If there is one lesson I wish to teach all of you, it is never believe your above nature because nature will hit you back 20 times harder. The Great Dragon War, Elder Dragons descended upon the Ancient Civilization, laying waste to it, and nearly killing off all of humanity. One Elder Dragon wiped out one of the strongest kingdoms on its own. Now Castle Schrade stands as a grim reminder to us what happens when you anger nature. The skies over that accursed place are permanently stained blood red with eerie dark clouds casting a permanent shadow over the once-proud kingdom.

The students were all shocked and then scared again and Pyrrha then asked another question and Leonidas listened.

Pyrrha: What would happen if one of the kingdoms were to upset the balance of nature would we all face the wrath of the Elder Dragons?

Leonidas: Most likely, all you could do is hope that none of the 3 Black Dragons show up. That would spell certain doom unless a hunting team that was incredibly skilled, lucky, and stupid enough are able to take it down. You see that is why the Guild dedicates itself to keeping the balance of nature, it's because we lived through the horror that is brought upon when you anger it.

Leonidas then noticed a camera at the top of the seats and turned to Professor Port.

Leonidas: Professor Port, what is that camera for?

Professor Port: Ozpin instructed me to live stream this conference to the councils of all kingdoms.

Leonidas then turned to the camera and made a clear announcement to the council with a serious tone.

Leonidas: People of Remnant I beg of you to listen, whatever issues you are currently facing, you must put it aside for now. All Humans and Faunus must respect the balance of nature, if one oversteps the boundaries, you could spell doom for us all. I know you are all probably scared, but I assure you that the Guild will handle it. We have lived alongside these creatures and have been hunting them for hundreds of years. I beg of you, please allow us to help you. We came here to help you adjust to the changing ecosystem, the 4 Kingdoms are a part of the community we have built over countless years and we will defend you. My team and I are still rookies, but that doesn't mean we'll run at the sight of danger! My father is a living legend amongst Monster Hunters and Silver Rose is a legend in her own right, us Hunters we don't give up. I look forward to meeting all of you, don't hesitate to ask for help. Human or Faunus, we will come in a heartbeat, that's our way of life working together and propping each other up through the darkest of times.

Leonidas then finished talking and everyone in the room was silent before starting clapping and then applauding Leonidas for his speech. Leonidas then smiled and then decided to end the class.

Leonidas: That ends our first class, now I want to assign a special task to all of you. Since my team's hunts will be recorded for the foreseeable future, I would like you to study them and make any observations about the monster's behavior or just questions about the hunt itself. I look forward to teaching you for the next few years! Now class is dismissed.

Leonidas then takes his leave out of the classroom.

Pyrrha: Brother you sure have changed since I last saw you. I am glad you are back.

END

KLigers98: Quest completed have to say that was a lot of information and that barely was all the information as there is so much more. So buddy, anything you want to say about this quest?

Tojamaru: Broadcasting Leonidas's classes to the councils is smart so they can all take safety measures against the monsters as Leonidas teaches the students more and more about the creatures they live with. Of course the team will most likely be busy with another quest soon and will need to hopefully make their way to the other major locations. Of course there is the matter of Pyrrha and Leonidas's mother most likely making her way to Beacon Academy.

KLigers98: That is another quest for another time but with that said thanks for completing the quest for RWBY: Dawn Of The Hunter. Like, comment, and follow for more quest on the quest board. Ligers signing off.

Tojamaru: Until our paths cross again everyone!
