2: Weekend In Argus
When they land in Argus, they get...looks...from the soldiers on the military base.
"Why is everyone looking at us like that?" Clover asked.
"Well...we did steal an airship to get from here to Atlas." Ruby replied.
"Oh, right. I forgot that you guys were here before you went to Atlas." said Clover.
"So, what kind of family do you have in Argus?" Qrow asked.
"My parents. My mom was a huntress and my dad was a pilot for the Atlas Military." Clover answered.
Clover leads the group to the house his mother and father live in. He rings the doorbell and it was his father who answered. Clover's father looked a lot like Clover, they could almost be twins; but he was shorter, grayer, and had hazel-brown eyes with glasses. At first, Clover's father looks shocked to see him, but then he smiles and hugs his son.
"Oh, thank the gods! We heard some really bad stuff was happening in Atlas. Your mother and I were so worried about you." Clover's father said, relieved.
"I kinda figured you were, so that's why I decided to...pop in." Clover replied, hugging his father back.
"I gotta tell you, your mother was very close to hijacking an airship and flying to Atlas herself." Clover's father said pulling out of the hug.
"Don't worry, Dad, everything's okay now." Clover assured his father.
"Guys, this is my father, Trevor Ebi." he said to the group.
"Woah...I, uhhh, don't mean to be rude; but why did you bring so many people here?" Trevor asked.
"I think it would be better if I explained it to you and Mom inside." Clover replied.
Once inside, Clover tells his parents about everything that's happened in Atlas since team RWBY and company's arrival...everything. He didn't leave out a single detail, not even his near-death experience at the hands of Tyrian Callows; that specific detail nearly made his mother cry.
"And then we came here, cause...I really wanted to see you two. I wanted some normalcy after everything that's happened." Clover said.
"It just...doesn't make any sense. How could the military be so...*sigh*. This wouldn't have happened in my day. When I was in the military we were taught to be soldiers who protected the people, not mindless drones who blindly follow orders, especially the orders of a madman. We were taught that when everything was on the line, that it was better to follow our gut than to follow orders, cause that could be the difference between life and death." Trevor ranted.
His wife places her hand on her husband's shoulder and gives it a gentle squeeze. He puts his hand over hers and smiles slightly.
"I agree, things just have not been the same since the fall of Beacon and the embargo. I don't know whether to be angry at Ironwood or feel sorry for the poor b*stard." Mrs. Ebi said.
"Well, my sister is in charge now, so I'm sure things will start to get better." Weiss said.
"Yeah, hopefully." Trevor replied.
A short awkward silence filled the room.
"Soooo...is anyone gonna comment on the awesome fact that Clover's mom is Joanna the Wondrous Huntress!?! Like, one of the coolest huntresses ever!" Jaune said excitedly, stars in his eyes.
"Oh my, aren't you a sweetheart!" Joanna giggled.
The conversation turned more upbeat once the kids got Joanna to talk about her days as a huntress.
"Alright, enough about me. Who wants to see baby photos of Clover?" Joanna said grabbing a photo album.
"ME!!" replied all the kids.
"Mom...th-that's not really necessary. Right, Qrow?" Clover said blushing with embarrassment.
"Sorry, lucky charm, but I'm with the kids on this one. Bring on the baby pics, Mrs. Ebi!" Qrow replied grinning widely.
"Okay, here's Clover on the day he was born." Joanna said pointing to a photo of a baby wrapped in blue.
"AWWW!" cooed the kids.
"Hehe, cute." said Qrow.
Hearing Qrow say that made Clover smile and blush, he liked the idea that Qrow thinks he's...cute. After showing off a few pictures from Clover's childhood, Joanna goes into the kitchen and makes dinner. During dinner, Qrow and Clover sat next to each other. They were so close, their knees brushed against each other. There was many unspoken...things...between the two. Since day one, the huntsmen had something between them; they would exchange flirty banter, longing glances, and many rounds of card games. Clover and Qrow were highly aware of each other's feelings for the other, so was everyone else, but neither made a move to make things...official.
"Am I mistaken, or...are they...together?" Joanna whispered to Yang, who sat next to her.
"Eehhh...sorta...not officially." Yang whispered back.
"How come it's not official? They really seem to like each other a lot." Joanna asked her.
"I mean...they're probably still shaken up about the whole...Tyrian thing, I'm not gonna sugarcoat it, it was pretty bad. Also, my uncle...he has...issues. So, it might be a while before the two of them are ready." Yang explained.
Joanna glances sadly at her son, her heart breaking in sympathy for all the pain and misery Clover has been through recently. When everyone was done eating, Clover walks out onto the back porch and sits on the swinging bench.
"What are you doing out here, baby?" Joanna asked sitting next to him.
"I just wanted some fresh air." Clover answered his mother.
The retired huntress wraps an arm around her son's shoulders.
"How are you feeling?" Joanna asked.
"Mom, really, I'm fine. I'm fully recovered." Clover told her.
"Clover, I didn't mean physically." replied Joanna.
"I...I-I guess...I guess I just feel guilty about the decisions I made during the martial law. I feel like I really disappointed you and Dad." Clover said looking at his feet.
"Oh, baby, your father and I love you, we would never be disappointed in you." Joanna said cupping his cheek and turning his head to make him look at her.
"But...I betrayed the people of Mantle, the people I swore to protect. I betrayed the people who actually considered me their friend, something the other Ace Ops never did. And I betrayed the man I...might...I don't know. I was an idiot, I threw everything you ever taught me about being a good huntsman right out the window...how can you not be disappointed in me?!" Clover said getting upset.
The poor man was on the verge of tears. His mother hugs him to her chest and kisses his head.
"You made mistakes, yes, but you're trying to make up for those mistakes. How can I be disappointed in that? It's clearly obvious your new friends have forgiven you, so why can't you just forgive yourself?" Joanna said holding Clover.
"That's easier said than done, Mom." Clover mumbled.
Clover lets his mother hold him in her arms for a while, cause that's what had always made him feel better growing up.
"Thanks, Mom." Clover said pulling out of Joanna's embrace.
"It was no problem at all. Clover, your father and I will always love and support you unconditionally. And don't you ever forget that." Joanna replied.
"I won't, I promise." Clover said.
Joanna kisses her son's forehead then goes back inside. Clover goes inside, then he goes upstairs to the bathroom to shower. He was putting his shirt back on when his father accidentally walked in on him.
"Sorry, son, I..." Trevor said, then paused when he saw the large vertical scar in the center of Clover's chest.
Trevor walks over to his son, puts his hand on his shoulder, and turns him around looking at the matching scar on his back.
"Oh my gods, Clover, how....how in Remnant did you....an injury like this should've killed you, how are you not dead!?!" Trevor asked, freaking out a little.
"Dad, calm down, please. I'm okay. I don't know how or why, but I am okay. So, please calm down." Clover said trying to get his father to stop freaking out.
"I'm so glad you're alright. I don't know what me or your mother would've done if you had..." Trevor said suddenly hugging Clover.
"I'm sorry I'm burdening you and Mom with all this stuff." Clover apologized.
"It's alright, son, you're not burdening us at all. It's definitely better than sitting around not knowing whether or not you're alive." Trevor said letting go.
After his father leaves, Clover puts his shirt on and exits the bathroom. For the night; Jaune, Ren, Nora, Oscar, and Penny stay at Jaune's sister's house while the rest stay at Joanna and Trevor's. Team RWBY took over the living room, leaving Qrow and Clover to share the guest bedroom.
"You can have the bed, I'll take the floor." Clover suggested.
"You don't have to do that. The, umm...bed's, uh, big enough for two...we could just share." Qrow replied shyly.
"Are you okay with that?" Clover asked blushing and looking elsewhere.
"I-I am if you are." Qrow stammered rubbing the back of his neck.
"Then I guess we could share." Clover said.
"Yeah..." Qrow agreed.
The two settle into bed with a good six inches of space in between them. Sleep did not come easy to Qrow that night, nor has it ever, not since what happened out on the frozen tundra of Solitace. Sometimes when you awake abruptly from a terrible nightmare, pieces of the dream stick with you and you see things that aren't really there. So, when Qrow wakes up gasping from tonight's nightmare, the same thing happens to him. Looking at his weapon leaning against the wall, Qrow sees dark crimson blood completely covering half of it. Then he looks over at Clover and sees a gaping hole in his chest and blood everywhere. With a quiet, strangled cry, Qrow shuts his eyes tightly and grips his hair. The next time Qrow opens his eyes, everything is back to normal and there is no blood anywhere. But it was still too much for Qrow to handle, so he quietly rushes out of the room, careful not to wake up Clover. He sits at the kitchen table and takes deep breaths to compose himself.
"Is everything okay?" a voice whispered from behind.
Qrow jumps slightly with a startled gasp and turns around to see Clover's mother, Joanna.
"I'm sorry...did I wake you?" Qrow asked.
"Don't worry about it, sweetie, I'm a light sleeper." Joanna replied.
She grabs a chair and sits next to Qrow.
"Did you have a nightmare...about what happened with that psycho that almost took my son's life?" Joanna asked putting her hand on his forearm.
"Yes, ma'am." replied Qrow.
"I'm sorry you two had to go through something so...horrific." Joanna said.
"It's my fault...everyone near me always gets hurt or killed." Qrow said, his voice cracking.
"I'm sure that's not true. You're a good man, I can tell. Sure, you've had bad things happen to you, but that doesn't mean it's your fault. Look, my son cares about you a lot, and I know you care about him. So, don't keep your distance just because you're afraid of losing him, you'll only regret it." Joanna told him, scooting a bit closer.
"You're son is an amazing man, he's one of the only people who's ever made me feel good about myself, that I wasn't a worthless human being." Qrow replied giving Joanna a weak, but genuine, smile.
"You have a lot more people in your corner than you realize, Qrow." Joanna said looking out into the living room.
Qrow follows Joanna's gaze and sees team RWBY in the living room, peacefully sleeping. Ruby was curled up in a ball on the recliner, Weiss occupied the loveseat, and Blake and Yang slept cuddling on the couch.
"Ya know, out of the four of them, I thought the blonde would be the one that snores...but nope...it's the white-haired one." Joanna chuckled.
In response, Qrow snickers covering his mouth. Joanna stands up and moves to standing behind Qrow.
"Go back to sleep, you really need it." Joanna told him, placing both hands on his shoulders.
She bends down and kisses the top of Qrow's head, surprising him. He sat there for some time, trying to decipher how Joanna's affection made him feel. Is this what a mother's love feels like? Qrow wouldn't really know, never having a mother of his own and all. If this really was what a mother's love felt like, Qrow didn't mind at all...in fact, he kinda liked it. Now calm, Qrow returns to the guest bedroom and slips back into bed.
"Qrow...you okay?" Clover asked stirring awake.
"Yes, just couldn't sleep, that's all." Qrow answered.
"Nightmare?" Clover asked.
"Is it that obvious?" replied Qrow.
"A little." answered Clover.
"Oh...okay. Well, seriously I'm fine now. Your mom, she talked to me...made me feel better. You're truly blessed to have such good parents. I...didn't have that growing up." Qrow told him.
"Well, at least you have a family that loves you, now." Clover said.
"Yeah, I do have that...and more." Qrow said sliding closer to Clover.
The men were now nose to nose, staring into each other's eyes.
"Whatcha doin there, Qrow?" Clover giggled.
"Taking a chance." Qrow replied smiling.
Qrow puts his hand on the back of Clover's neck and pulls him into a gentle kiss. Clover kisses back placing his hand on the small of Qrow's back. After the kiss, Qrow snuggles into Clover's chest, and that is how they slept the rest of the night. The next morning, the both of them didn't exactly hide their new relationship.
"About d*mn time." Yang said to her sister looking at Qrow and Clover from across the room.
"Uh-huh." Ruby nodded.
"Last night, I gave your uncle a little advice. So, you're welcome." Joanna told the sisters.
"Awesome." Yang said high-fiveing her.
"Hmmm...Uncle Clover...has a nice ring to it." Ruby commented rubbing her chin in thought.
"I like the sound of that!" Yang replied.
"Me too." Joanna agreed.
"You lovely ladies can call me Auntie JoJo." she whispered to them.
The three of them then erupt into a fit of giggles.
"What are you girls giggling about?" Trevor asked.
"Oh, nothing!" answered the three...then more giggles.
The weekend in Argus was just what everyone needed to wind down after their stressful time in Atlas. On the day of departure, everyone says goodbye to each other. Trevor, Saphron, and Tera give team RWBY and company well wishes; and Joanna gives them all spine-cracking bear hugs, her specialty, with the addition of giving Clover a hundred kisses on his cheeks. When everyone had boarded, the airship takes off and begins it's trek to Vacuo.
