"Welcome to the team, rookie." The red head had grinned at you. She was the first to welcome you, a competitive glint in her green eyes. She had recently seen you on the training field, and you were a pretty good fighter.
But not as good as her.
You were only called rookie by Carolina, since everyone still thought Wash was the newbie. Here you were, Agent (s/n). Known as rookie, (y/n) and sometimes smartass. And that's all you stayed as.
One night, you were staying up late celebrating with the guys; you all had completed a mission successfully.
The only bad thing was you barely did anything.
It's not like you didn't want to, they just didn't include you much. The same thing happened with Wash, but neither of you spoke up to the Director about the issue due to the fear of getting hated by the more 'skilled' freelancers.
Carolina was watching from afar, peering from the edge of the wall. Usually curiosity never got the best of her, but there was something about you that interested her.
"What about you York?" North asked, chin resting on his hand, wobbling once in a while.
"I like your sisstttah?" The joker slurred, chuckling for no reason. North gasped over dramatically.
"I'll forgive yuuu," North glared playfully. "Just don't hart her."
Wash was knocked out cold, he was never a drinker. That left you. You were humming to the Dora theme song for some reason.
"Hey (y/n), who do you like??"
North questioned, leaning forward. You visibly gulped. Don't mess this up.
"Who do. Hehe, that rhymed..." York murmured. North elbowed his friend.
You glanced to the side, "Well, I think Carolina is pretty sweet."
The dark purple and green soldier looked like he was about to choke. "Sweet? She's literally the most competitive, vicious person on this team." North scoffed, leaning back his chair, shoulders tense.
"Dood, you need a massage." York said, snorting. You could've sworn you saw North's cheeks blush pink.
Meanwhile, Carolina was frowning. How could her team mates say that? She was only controlling because she was almost always the leader of the mission if they weren't split between two teams. But now with Agent Texas arriving, maybe she had taken it to a whole new level.
"She's nice to me." You defended, crossing your arms. It was true. Carolina had thought you were going to try and take her down from the leaderboard, but you ended up being 4th place anyway and you seemed completely fine with that. Ever since that, Carolina greeted you in the morning and sometimes would drink coffee with you while chatting quietly.
The red head smiled at those four words. It meant a lot, because most people in the project never wanted to befriend her. Not that she minded, she could do just fine solo. Atleast she thought so. But, Carolina could never deny some comforting company.
"Whatever you say, (s/n)." North mumbled, finishing the last of his drink. You stood up shakily, heading toward the hallway where Carolina was hiding.
"Dora Dora Dora the explorer!" You sang in a quiet voice, hoping the other sleeping freelancers wouldn't hear you. It's not like it mattered, you were drunk and you probably wouldn't remember the next day.
You heard a small giggle from behind you. You turned around quickly, alarmed.
"Oh. Hi there Carolina." You smiled warmly.
"Hey." Was all she said, before she stepped towards you and grabbed your hands. She pulled your hands up to your cheeks.
You didn't even know that your face was burning, "You're drunk." Carolina smirked.
You grinned cheekily, "No, I'm (y/n)." You got an eye roll and a chuckle, feeling satisfied.
"Let's get you to bed, (y/n)." She muttered. Your name rolled off her tongue smoothly, and you could feel your cheeks burn a little more.
Carolina set you down on the bed, pushing a loose strand of her ponytail behind her ear.
"Thank you. For what you said." She said, gripping her other arm loosely as if she was anxious.
"I- uh, no prob." You replied quickly. Her emerald eyes seemed to drown in your eyes. She looked to the left to hide the flustered feeling rising from her chest.
"Do you ever miss the stars?" You blurted out randomly. She looked at you, eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
"But... we practically live in space."
You sighed, "I meant... I miss being far away from the stars. Where you could just watch from afar, naming each little spec in the sky. But now, we're so close to stars that it's no longer enjoyable."
Carolina looked conflicted for a second before saying, "Yeah. I get what you're talking about."
"Okay. Goodnight." You whispered, kissing her hand with drowsy movements. She blushed, not pulling her hand away but enjoying the unfamiliar sensation.
"Goodnight."
