33. Family is everything
Chapter Thirty three of Ruthless
Love reigns ❤️
"Hey big bro." Kate sat next to her brother, Nathan who was lieing flat on his sister's rug. His eyes were closed, trying to forget about what was on his mind and relax if possible. He really couldn't wait for tomorrow to come. He was tired. Work had always being stressful but what he had to do regardless. His mind was so full of different thoughts with Tacha in it as well. He didn't know what to do. He really missed her. He wanted to see her, but he couldn't. He had promised to let her go. It seemed as if he was the only one who was being hunted by this feeling. Gosh! His heart was going to burst at the thought of her. Her smiles, her laughter, her eyes... Nathan smiled. Her face appeared in his thoughts and he saw her rolling her eyes. Asking him...what's with the smile? He chuckled and slowly he stopped. He really didn't know what to do. What was it that made her so happy to get away from him? Damn! He really missed her. Every time he saw ladies with Tacha's body or that looked a little like her, he wouldn't help thinking about her. The truth was, he wanted to kiss her so badly and have her smiled and laughed at him regardless.
He wanted to really listen to Jamal. Forget about Tacha, and exert his energy on getting to know someone else who could later on be his girlfriend. At this point, he was going to have a conversation with his mum about breaking up with Lola. He was tired of going on with someone whom he cared less about when he wanted to get serious with his life. Somehow, Tacha made Nathan realise he had some attitude that no one ever complained to him about. He wanted to know them. Correct them, but how could he even do that when they had always being part of him. He sighed. Nathan thought what to do between the two options. He had really promised Tacha to let her be, but at this point he wouldn't deny the fact that he was madly into her. She was driving him insane. To see Tacha was the top of his priorities and he couldn't understand how he got to where he was. Why was Tacha making him act this way? Her thoughts filled his head. It was hard to act like they never met. They never knew each other. They never kissed, they never hugged, cuddled, fucked each other like the next day was never going to come. Oh, damn! Nathan cursed silently. The way she looked into his eyes the last time, it was everything. Would he really be able to move on?
Nathan expected to see Tacha tomorrow. He had intentionally invited her team, and of course he knew if Tacha said no, the rest wouldn't agree with her. She could have the privilege to know one of the Browns while the rest watched from afar and wouldn't throw away the opportunity to attend the Brown's party. This was the Brown's party. A party strictly by invitation which will be filled with men of high status. People go through hell, especially ladies and men trying to look for assistance and wealthy people who they could connect with.
Kate didn't get a response to her greeting. She kept quiet and watched her brother smiled, chuckled, grinned and sighed for as many times he could. He seem worried, extremely bothered to her and Nathan seemed to really crave for something so bad. Kate had known her brother so well. Just like the rest of her brothers, he was arrogant, cared less, always showing off, never take any lady serious, very picky, saucy and cocky. He seemed to take after their mum with showing off material things. Her brother had the most expensive neck chain. His car was the most expensive one in the family and more in numbers. He had more of designers in his closet, best house among her brothers. Never eats anything aside Chicken, which was an attitude he grew up with that made him get anything whatsoever he wanted. If he wanted a chicken he had to take it. If anyone else takes it, the person has to pay for the disrespect. Nathan had the best relationship with their mum, always laughing together, gossiping together anytime he was home, but this time, her brother walked up to her room and not even to his room. His facial expression expressing pain, worry, anger, and regret. Kate seem worried by someone who had everything in his palm.
"Big brother," Kate tapped him this time "What's really on your mind? Have never seen you so bothered because you always seem cheerful whenever you come home."
Nathan sighed, turning his attention to his sister, Kate. He smiled a little at her, grabbing her right cheek closer to him, getting Kate grinned at him. He dropped his hand. "That face is too pretty to worry about big bro. How much do you need?"
Kate rolled her eyes, and Nathan wondered if all ladies does that. He knew his sister had grown so much and there were things he couldn't ask her anymore. Kate moved closer to her brother. "If I wanted to ask you for money, I would have dropped you a Whatsapp message or call you. Right now, I'm worried about you. I'm concerned and I can tell you everyone downstairs saw this face too. How can I help you?"
Nathan smiled. "Okay. Can I ask you a question. Don't you dare laugh at me." He warned, his mouth spreading slightly into a small smile. He stopped smiling, looking away from his sister. "If I happen not to be your brother, and you are ready for a serious relationship, can you be in a relationship with someone like me?" Nathan turned his head back to her.
Kate grinned before shaking her head a bit slowly, trying not to hurt Nathan's pride. "I'm just trying to be honest bro. My answer is no."
"Whao!" Nathan raised his brows at Kate. His mouth gaped open after his declaration to the surprise he received from his own sister. His own blood. He knew her sister was in a relationship even though he didn't like it cause she was still nineteen, no matter how many weeks left for her to stop being a teenager and clock twenty. She was still young. "It's okay. You don't need to feel bad. I really want your honest answers."
Kate slowly relaxed. Having brothers around her didn't give her room to open up to anyone aside her mum. Her laughter filled the four walls of her room watching how bad Nathan was trying his best not to seem so hurt. She could tell her brother was hurt by her answer, but it was the truth.
"So," Nathan said. "Why? Why when I have enough money to take care any woman who dates me. She will definitely have everything."
"That's the more reason any lady will be in a relationship with you, and behind you, she has someone who she is... someone she is...uhmm..." Kate hesitated. She didn't know how to say that part. She never had a relationship discussion with her brother and it felt so awkward doing that with someone that scolded her a lot.
The two siblings shared a quick glance and Kate laughed. "I'm sorry. I don't know how to put it."
"Why are you stammering. You meant she could be in a relationship and cheat behind my back. Are you scared I will question your relationship with Tade. You are over eighteen anyways. So continue."
Kate nodded, thankful her brother didn't make a big deal about it like she expected. She continued. "That's because if she has a reason to keep you, she would rather do so, tolerate you because of the benefits that comes with you and still look for a man who would treat her better after you. But if she really cares about you. If she truly loves you and isn't moved by what you have and what she would gain, all she wants would be for you to be your best, show her the effort of being a better person than who she used to know. Which means, if she doesn't want to be with a man who talks to her anyhow, full of himself and have no respect for her or anyone, whether he has everything or not, she wouldn't."
Nathan's ears were very attentive to his sister. He was picking so much from what she was saying but marveled at her knowledge. "So, that means Tade is really better than me."
"No." Kate grinned. "Tade can be Bossy at times, but he's caring. He respects me. He allows me to be myself. I don't mind his silly attitude at times, but after everything, he makes me proud and spoils me a lot."
"He wouldn't dare anyways. Not when I'm here."
Nathan and Kate turned their heads to the door. Kate laughed covering her face from her brothers. "Please you people should not do anything silly to him okay. Gosh, I wish I have sisters. This would have been fun." She got up. "But I know nobody is gonna date you guys anyway so I'm stuck with you people for many more years to come."
Nathan couldn't help his laughter watching Anthony being silly for another two minutes. He wouldn't let Kate passed. "Where do you think you are going? You will have to tell me what you and Tade are doing in that relationship."
"You guys should stop now." Kate's voice was begging, wishing she didn't come up at all.
Nathan laughed. "Anthony please let her pass. Don't let her cry. We will keep watching her from afar. She's in good hands."
"Anyways." Anthony stepped aside. "You know Nathan has a girlfriend in case you need someone to talk to."
"God forbid!" Kate stopped on her track turning to her brothers. "That Stingy Lola. She will see me at parties and act like she doesn't know me. Since I begged her for a particular bag, she's been hiding from me."
Anthony chuckled. "We could have gotten it for you if it's that expensive. What type of bag let's order for it."
"Expense...what?" Kate's expression made Nathan burst into laughter after keeping quiet for a while. "I could have gotten it myself. I just wanted to use it to bond with her. I was going to buy her the dolce &Gabbana heels I saw on her Instagram status she wanted so badly. I was going to surprise her and build a relationship with her, but thank God now that I know she doesn't have a place in my brother's heart."
"Ehnnn! Come here." Anthony dragged Kate quickly before she could run away. "You this girl, what do you know? Oya, who is the someone else that has a place in your brother's heart?" He said, teasing his sister.
"Mummyyyyyyy!" Kate's voice circulated the whole house almost shaking the building from the root. She wanted to get away from her brothers and their Mum was the only one who could help her do that.
"Omo..." Anthony murmured, stepping aside for Kate. "Mummy is bringing her wahala upstairs."
Nathan quickly got up. "Please leave the way. I need to rest." He wanted to run away before their mum arrived truly. When he came out of the door, he hissed, turning back to Anthony who was already laughing. "You are mad. How come I believed you stupid." He looked around and saw one of Kate's sneakers lieing around. He picked it up and threw it at Anthony. He successfully dodged it and got up from where he was. "Sorry bro. I just wanted to cheer you up."
Anthony looked more serious now. He stood before Nathan, the two brothers facing each other. He placed his right hand on Nathan's left shoulder. "I know how worried you are, but Nathan, for a girl who grew up without a father, do you think she wouldn't look out for red flags. She has every reason to say no, take her time, use her brain rather than her heart. It's really tough for her to be with someone who isn't showing any hint of change. Whenever a man finds the right one, he doesn't have to change who he is, but he can become a better person. There is no limit to what a man can become. Don't let her just be your weak point, let her be your strong ally. She's good for you, but you need to be good for her too for her to bond with you." Anthony moved his hand away, dipping it into his pocket.
He walked slowly away from Nathan. "You should meet my girlfriend tomorrow at the party. Her name is also Tacha Williams." Anthony said before he ran downstairs for his brother not to catch up with him. He laughed when he got downstairs and turned around, seeing Nathan just stood there trying his best not to laugh. If everyone was serious in that family. Anthony was never. If not because he had always wanted to be a doctor, they all thought he would never have succeeded with his playful lifestyle. Anthony took after their mum with that, yet he seemed not to like it when she acted that way towards him.
"Darling." Mrs. Brown called when she spotted Nathan from upstairs. "Your brothers are not back yet."
"Anthony will handle that."
"Okay." Mrs Brown said.
Nathan yelled. "Happy Birthday in advance mum."
Mrs. Brown's smile came out nice, her lips spreading wide. Her worried face brightened for few seconds. "Thank you my love. I know you said Anthony will handle it, but you should try and call the twins too. They are not picking my calls."
Nathan nodded and turned towards his room. He knew the twins were going about to places they could visit after many years of leaving Nigeria. He dipped his hand into his pocket to reach for his phone.
