[12] My Hero
Kelsey's POV
After economics class was over, Stiles bumped into his dad who told him that The William Barrow, The Shrapnel Bomber was wandering about the school. The police couldn't find him anywhere and then apparently someone spotted him by a train station. However, Lydia had a feeling he was still inside, and knowing Lydia's supernatural banshee senses , she's probably right. William Barrow went after kids with glowing eyes, and to me that sounds like my kind, werewolves.
I don't know if he knows werewolves exist and he thinks he's going crazy, but that's no excuse for murdering innocent kids. Also, apparently Barrow woke up from anaesthesia. And when they opened him up, they found a tumour full of live flies, which is grossly disgusting and unsettling. Then Lydia brought up that she'd been hearing flies buzzing all day, that's got to be annoying. I would hate to be a banshee, hearing all kinds of disturbing voices and sounds, I feel for her.
Stiles and Lydia went to search for Barrow around upstairs, and Allison went back to her house to do some research on anything about flies coming out of people's bodies. So that left myself, Scott, Isaac, and the twins to search the basement. "Okay, my mom brought these in from the hospital, they're the last thing Barrow was wearing. Kelsey and Isaac with me down that way, Ethan and Aiden the other way." Scott instructed.
I glanced at Isaac for a second again, it's all we've been doing all day. I felt really bad about kissing Jake in front of him, I still do. At the time I thought it seemed like a good idea, but it was the complete oppose. I wanted him to feel what I felt, but I only made things worse. I think Isaac and I need some more space before we become civil with each other, if that'll even happen. Of course, I don't want to have all this hate for him, I still love him despite all he's done, but I don't think I'm in love with him anymore.
And I can't look at him without seeing Allison by his side, which is why I haven't been round my house, and it kills me because I miss seeing mom and Scott every morning. The boys all turned to face the direction they were going to search, but I didn't want to go with Scott and Isaac, I just couldn't. "Actually, I think I'll go this way with the twins." I spoke up, my brother looked at me. I think he understood why I chose not to follow him.
Isaac didn't look back, but I could tell he didn't want me to go with the twins, after all, he didn't like or trust them one bit. "Are you sure?" Scott asked. "I'll be fine, Scott. Besides, I'll keep an eye on them." I reassured my brother before walking alongside the twins. Probably not the best idea I've had lately, but right now I'd rather be with the twins than having to be face to face with Isaac and feeling the flooding guilt inside me. I keep replaying that whole night over in my head when Jake took me to that party, I wish I could just change what happened or rather not have been there at all.
Allison may have said some pretty hurtful things to me, but what I did to Isaac was way worse – I did to him what he had done to me, and I've felt that pain. I'm not sure if we can come back from this. We've both messed up with each other and I can't help but blame myself. "I thought you were considering trusting us?" Aiden brought up as his brother walked a head.
I looked at him. "No, I said I needed time to think about a truce." Aiden needs to learn that trust doesn't come easy. And I haven't seen them try to make an effort after everything they've done or contributed to. "And have you thought about that?" He asked as we followed Ethan down the corridor. "I've been a little preoccupied with other stuff, and just remember I'm not the only one you need to gain trust with." I reminded him.
Aiden sighed, he knows it's going to take a while before it happens, but he'll have to be patient with us all. He didn't say much after that, I suppose he didn't know what else to say. But I didn't care really, I'd just rather go back to bed. As we turned a corner, Ethan came to a halt.
"Got something?" Aiden asked his brother before they both and jumped out to inspect. We didn't find Barrow, however we found Danny kissing his ex-boyfriend. Oh Danny, he could do way much better. Why is he down here and being so secretive about it? Danny was lost for words when he caught our eyes watching him with surprise.
"Oh really?" Ethan said, clearly unimpressed, which Aiden just had to giggle at whilst trying his best to hold it in. Shortly after that, the three of us walked down another way before we heard the fire alarm go off, which is when we ran back upstairs.
Scott and Isaac regrouped with us once we spotted Stiles and Lydia across the courtyard. "We didn't find anything." Aiden brought up as I stood beside him and Ethan. "Not even a scent." My brother added. Where else could Barrow be? He's got to be around here somewhere, surely.
"It's 3:00, so school's over. If there was a bomb, wouldn't he have set it off by now?" Stiles mentioned. "Does that mean everybody's safe?" Aiden asked, looking in Lydia's direction, everyone else doing the same as she opened her mouth to answer. "I don't know. I just, I don't know." It must be really hard for Lydia, hearing things and not always knowing what could happen next, I'd be so stressed out if I were in her position. But if she says Barrow was still in the school, then I believe her.
***
It had been a few hours since school finished and I was laying on Stiles bed, watching him pin pictures up all over his wall and playing with the string left next to me. "What do the different coloured strings mean?" I asked as he connected some more red string to the pictures. "Oh, just different stages of the investigation. So green is solved, yellow is to be determined, blue's just pretty." Stiles answered as he turned around to explain, though he didn't mention what the red string was for.
"What does red mean?"
"Uh, unsolved." Right, well he only seems to have red string, surely that's not good. "You only have red on the board." I pointed out, causing Stiles to turn around again. "Yes, I'm aware. Thank you." It must be frustrating for him, his dad too. I really hope my asshole of a dad doesn't make Sheriff Stilinski lose his job. What if Stiles can't bear to be around Scott and I anymore because of my dad?
I don't want my dad to come between our friendship. I let out a sigh. Why does everything have to be so complicated? Everything is just stressing me out. The whole situation with Isaac and Allison, Jake popping up almost everywhere and us kissing each other, the twins, dad coming back into our lives, mom having to work double shifts, Derek and Peter being god knows where, and on top of that our pack is constantly running around catching bad guys and saving everyone. It's just too much to handle, and it never stops, not really. "Stiles, do you ever think about the future?"
"Yeah, all the time, why?"
"Do you think it'll ever go back to normal?"
"Well, I don't think our lives will ever be exactly normal, considering that the majority of the town are probably supernatural creatures, and that includes yourself and Scott." Yup, nothing will ever be the same again, not that I regret my decision, I just we had time to ourselves sometimes rather than always being the ones to save everyone. "What about getting married, having children and living until we're old."
"Of course, why'd you ask?" Stiles turned his attention from the investigation on the wall to me. I sighed again, feeling down. "I don't know, I guess with everything that's gone on lately, it's just made me question things... Erica and Boyd dying so young as well, I don't want that to happen to me." Stiles walked over to the edge of the bed where I was laying, bending down to my height. His eyes watching mine worriedly as he grabbed my hand, holding it in his.
"Hey listen, you're not going to die young, okay? Kelsey you are so brave and strong, you're not going to die, not on my watch. I'm your hero remember, and don't you forget that." He smiled. I smiled back. "You're my hero." And he really is my hero, there's no me without Stiles in my life, I'd be so lost without him. What did I do to deserve a friend like Stiles? He's going to make such a perfect boyfriend to a lucky girl one day.
"Exactly, and I'm always here for you. Now, back to the investigation; Lydia knew Barrow was still in the school, she felt it, and even if we couldn't find him, I believe her. In fact, I'd go back to that school right now and search all night just to prove it." Stiles told me whilst playing with his yellow felt-tip pen. He would go back to the school now? Well nothing ever good comes from that, especially at night. And how would he prove it?
No one could smell Barrow in the basement or anywhere else in the school, not that I'm saying Lydia was wrong, Barrow probably just hid himself well. Stiles' eyes widened as he sniffed his pen, but before I could question him, he opened his mouth and said. "Get up. Get up now. We're going to the school." And with that, we left his room.
Stiles didn't let me know why he wanted to go to the school right now at this time of night, and in the middle of chilling, but I have a feeling it has something to do with Barrow. "So, what are we looking for?" I asked Stiles as I followed him into our chemistry classroom. "That was supposed to be locked." I mentioned as Stiles pushed open the storage cupboard and stepped inside. "Yeah. I know. Notice anything else?" He asked me. "It smells like chemicals." Then it hit me, that's why Stiles brought me here – he figured it out when he sniffed his pen. We couldn't smell Barrow because the chemicals in here were concealing us from doing so.
"We wouldn't have been able to catch his scent." I told Stiles, who was kneeling down looking at small broken shards of glass that were covered in blood. That has to be Barrow's blood. "He was here, performing very minor surgery on himself. Lydia was right." But why would Barrow come here though? What does he want? And why our school? Something just doesn't seem right, but I'm not sure what.
"Why don't I feel good about this?"
"Probably because he was here to kill somebody." Stiles answered. "But who?" Who would Barrow want to kill? Well, I mean besides 'all the kids with glowing eyes' which basically means myself, Scott, Isaac and the twins. Though he didn't come after us so we're all good, but there has to be someone else. Someone Barrow feels the need to come all this way to kill. "That's what we got to figure out. We could spread out, start looking for anything." Stiles instructed as we both looked around the room for clues. And that's when I noticed the board.
The board at the front on the classroom had numbers written on it; 19, 53, and 88. Those have to be atomic numbers, right? Makes sense since we're in a chemistry room. But who wrote them? Did Barrow do this? "Kelsey, what are those?" Stiles asked from behind. "Atomic numbers."
Stiles came and stood beside me as he also looked at the three two-digit numbers written on board. "Is it a formula?" I looked at the numbers carefully as I let my brain do the working out. "Not really. Nineteen is potassium, fifty-three's iodide, eighty-eight's radium. The first two make potassium iodide." I told him as I wrote the letter 'K' next to number nineteen. "Potassium is K?" He questioned.
"From kalium, the scientific neo-Latin name." I explained to a confused Stiles, writing the letter 'I' across from fifty-three. I suppose all that late-night studying paid off, Lydia's notes helped a ton as well. "What's radium?" Stiles queried. And for the last number on the board, it wrote the letters that stood for radium. "R-A." I said aloud as I took a look at the whole board. Oh no. "Kira." Stiles read. This is not good, this is not good at all. Why would Barrow want to go after Kira?
She hasn't done anything, at least nothing that we know of, but she sure as hell doesn't seem like a bad person, or someone worth killing for that matter. "We have to tell Scott." Stiles announced as we rushed out the school. That's when it hit me – Scott was over Kira's house for dinner tonight since her father invited him, something to do with saving Kira from the coyote that happened to be Malia.
But if Scott is there then maybe she's alright, either way, we need to let Scott know so he can protect her an be alert. On the way to Kira's house, we picked Lydia up on the way as she wanted to help. As we got closer, I noticed that there was someone laying on the ground, but then I came to realize that it was actually my brother.
"Oh god, Scott's on the floor. Stiles stop the car." I said anxiously as I jumped out the Jeep before Stiles could stop driving. Barrow must have got here before us. I rushed to my brothers' side, desperately hoping Barrow hadn't hurt him in any way. "Scott! Scott, can you hear me?" I shouted as I kneeled down. "Scott!" Stiles shouted from behind, rushing towards us, and Lydia following. "Scott!" I shouted again.
My brother moved his head slightly and looked at the three of us before shooting up. "Barrow, he took Kira!" Scott informed us, still in shock. "We know. He was after her the whole time." Stiles told my brother, whose eyes widened. After helping my brother up, Scott rang up Isaac who seemed to be at Allison's house, helping her with research, which they couldn't find anything on other than flies and the dead. If you ask me, I bet they were doing anything but research, not that I care anymore, they can do what they damn well like. I'm over it.
"We have to think of something. He's going to kill her." I could tell Scott really cared for this girl, and so he should, she seems really sweet, I even like the girl. I would hate to see her go. But how are we going to help her when we don't even know where Barrow has her captive? "I knew he was there. How did I know that?" Lydia questioned.
"Because you heard the flies, right?"
"What do you hear now?" Scott asked Lydia, who looked down, probably trying to listening out for something. "Nothing. I feel like I can do this. But I don't know what to do. It's like it's on the tip of my tongue, and I don't know how to trigger it. I just I swear to God, it literally makes me want to scream." Lydia said frustratingly as she took a few steps away from us.
Okay, I think she's onto something.
If she lets it all out, if she screams... then maybe she'll hear something that could help us and we'll get to find out the location of Kira and save her from Barrow. "Okay, then scream. Lydia, scream." I commanded my friend, and she did just that. Stiles and I managed to hold our ears from Lydia's piercing scream before it did any damaged, though it was still loud enough to hear, but Scott could tolerate it, better than us anyway.
It probably would have done more damaged to Stiles since he's human, but I wasn't taking any chances. Lydia stopped screaming, and for a while she was quiet, before swiftly turning around to face the three of us. "It's not flies. It's electricity." She stated. "Wait a second, Barrow was an electrical engineer. He worked at a power substation." Stiles mentioned.
"What substation?"
***
The four of us rushed to the substation that Barrow formally worked at, hurrying to save Kira's life. "Okay. Wait here, alright? Just wait for the cops to come." Stiles had told Lydia as we jumped out of the Jeep. The building kind of looked like it could be haunted since it was old and abandoned, wouldn't surprise me if it were. "Me? Wait, why?" She asked, Scott running into the building first.
"I only got one bat." He replied, following behind me. What is he exactly planning on doing with that bat? Oh Stiles. You know, maybe he should consider upgrading his choice of weaponry, maybe to a gun or something – ah no, on second thoughts, a bat seems more suitable. Wouldn't want him to accidently shoot someone, or himself, seeing as he can be quite clumsy.
"Do you know where you're going?" Stiles asked as I came to a halt. "Yeah, follow me." I told him once I caught onto my brothers scent as well as Barrows – and let me tell you this, he reeked. God, this building gives me the heebie jeebies. "Scott! No! Look out!" I heard Kira shout from around the corner. Stiles and I briefly looked at each other before sprinting towards Kira's concerned warning towards my brother.
Scott begged Barrow to stop multiple times, but he didn't. Just as I came in, Barrow was seconds away from electrocuting Kira and my brother was on the floor. Then, before I could make a move, Barrow stuck. Sparks flew everywhere – they were so bright I had to cover my eyes, and then, out of nowhere, the sparks were being pulled to Kira like a magnet.
She wasn't dead or injured in any way. How can that be? And how the bloody hell is she absorbing all that electricity? If she was human, it would have killed her, hell, if she was like Scott and I, she'd even be dead – clearly, she's nothing like us. And if she isn't human nor werewolf, then what is she? Once all the electricity was taken in through Kira, her face was just as confused as the rest of us. Does she not know her own strength or what she is for that matter? Not long after, the cops came to our call and took all of us to the station where Sheriff Stilinski and my dad were waiting, here goes.
Lydia walked in first, sitting on a stray chair, Kira next who planted herself on the couch, Scott next to her, Stiles beside him, which left me to sit on the arm of the couch, though I think I was half sitting on Stiles. Once we were settled, Agent McCall opened his mouth. I blocked out most of what he said until I zoned back in again.
"So, when did you get there?" He asked.
"At the same time." Stiles answered with a straight face. "At the same time as who?" Dad interrogated. Can this be other already, I just want to go back home to Stiles' house and relax in a nice hot bubble bath. At this rate, we'll be here for hours, not that it bothers my dad, he doesn't have a life outside his stupid job. "At the same time as Kelsey and I." Scott replied.
"By coincidence?"
"What do you mean coincidence?" I could tell Stiles was trying to annoy my dad, although he tends to do that without trying anyway. "That's what I'm asking you. The three of you arrived at the same time. Was that coincidence?" Oh god, we're literally going to be here all night.
"Are you asking me?" My brother asked confused.
"I think he's asking me." Stiles spoke.
"Or me." I mentioned, joining in on the torment. Might as well have fun annoying my dad. "I think he's asking all of you." Lydia chimed in. Woo, it's wind up dad day – and it was working, you could tell with how impatient he was getting. "Okay, let me answer the questions. Let me ask the questions. Just so I have this absolutely clear. Barrow was hiding in the chemistry closet at the school. Someone left him a coded message on the blackboard telling him to kill Kira. Then Barrow took Kira to a power substation and tied her up with the intent of electrocuting her, which blacked out the entire town."
Agent McCall's eyes mainly looked in Stiles' direction at the end of his little recap of the interrogation. "Sounds about right." Stiles confirmed. Dad wasn't buying it, he never does. "How did you know he'd take her to a power station?" Dad went on. "Well, because he was an electrical engineer. So where else would he take her?" My best friend told my dad.
"That's one hell of a deduction there, Stiles." Dad pointed out, still not believing a single word coming out of Stiles' mouth. "Yeah, well what can I say? I take after my pops. He's in law enforcement." Stiles retorted, sending a wink to his dad who was sat behind Agent McCall, snorting.
My dad looked back, giving Sheriff Stilinski the eye pretending to cough to cover up the snorting. "Stiles, just, uh...Just answer the man." The Sheriff instructed his son. "We made a good guess." Dad then turned to me. "What were you doing, Kelsey?" He asked. "I was with Stiles the whole time." I said truthfully while mentally eye rolling.
"And what about you two, what were you doing?" Dad turned to his son and Kira. Huh, I'm wondering myself what they got up to. What did they eat? Did they kiss? Or was Scott a gentleman? And does it really count as a date if Kira's dad invited him to have dinner at their how...hmm, maybe not so much but at least he got to spend time with her outside of school.
"Eating Pizza." Scott answered the same time Kira said; "Eating sushi." They looked at each other briefly before opening their mouths again, only this time they had said what the other did last time, making matters worse and dad was starting to pull his confused and frustrated look, frowning as he did so. "Eating sushi and pizza." The lovebirds said simultaneously. "You believe this?" Agent McCall turned to ask Stiles' dad, whom responded with; "To be honest, I haven't believed a word Stiles has said since he learned how to speak. But I think these kids found themselves in the right place at the right time and that girl sitting there is very lucky for it."
"Kira, is that how you remember it?" Dad asked yet another question. Myself, Stiles, Scott and Lydia leaned forward on our seats to look at Kira, hoping she'd go along with the story we planned with.
"Yes. Could I get my phone back now?"
Dad shook his head. "Sorry, but no." And a few seconds after, the door was opened and all five of us were free to leave the station. "Kira, a deputy is going to take you home. But we'll need you to fill out some paperwork first." He told Kira before she walked away, looking back at Scott and I. But before we could leave ourselves, Dad called our names.
Oh great, here we go.
"Scott, Kelsey. I don't know why you guys are lying. Or why Stilinski is content to listen to this crap. But try and remember something. If half this story about Barrow is true, then not only did someone help set him loose, but he was a pawn in their little game. A mass murderer is bad enough. A mass murderer being controlled by someone? Far worse."
"Yeah, we get it." Scott answered on behalf of the both of us.
"Alright, go home. It's a school night." Dad spoke like a true parent, ugh.

Kelsey and Stiles are getting more and more scenes together...soon to be Void Stiles, how excited are you to see how it plays out?? I know I am. I wonder what Kelsey will do when she finds out Stiles is being possessed by nogitsune. Kelsey may have to go back home and face Isaac.
What are your thoughts on this chapter??
