[05] Finding Malia
Kelsey's POV
I'm starting to think strutting through the woods in the middle of the night has become our thing. We're like detectives; finding bodies and clues. I guess Stiles was the one who got us into all this in the first place. Not that it's a bad thing or anything, because I can't really imagine my life without solving mysteries and committing crimes. "You know, if my dad's right, that means there's another werewolf in town that we haven't met yet."
I hope for our sakes that there isn't another werewolf in town. Because what if they're evil, as in more evil than Peter was when he was an alpha?
What if they turn into a bigger scarier monster that doesn't stop killing, no matter what's in its path? I don't know if we can handle that on our plates right now, we already have enough to deal with. And I don't know what I'm doing half the time. We just deal with the problem as it comes, and there usually always is a problem.
Damn supernatural beacon, forever attracting unwanted enemies. Huh, now thinking about it, what if this new monster isn't a werewolf, but something else? It could be a completely different species that we haven't discovered yet. "I know." Scott said distantly while looking at the GPS on his phone. "It might not even be a werewolf, there could be other supernatural creatures out there just lurking in the shadows, who knows what it could be."
I brought up, my thoughts drifting to the bestiary, as well as Deaton mentioning the Nemeton tree being a beacon for the supernatural. "Great, well if it turns out to be something like triplets that form into like a three-headed hound of hell, I'm seriously not up for that." Three-headed hound of hell, yeah, well let's pray that doesn't exist.
Werewolves, Kanimas, Darachs and Banshees are plenty supernatural for me to handle, let alone anything else that might be wandering about town up to no good. I wonder if vampires or wendigos exist too? I mean there could be a chance. Who knows, maybe the Salavtore brothers and the Mikaelson family are out there somewhere, causing mayhem. I wouldn't mind if they came to visit Beacon Hills, I wouldn't mind one bit.
"Yeah, me either. Especially if I can't even control my own transformation anymore." Scott said before a coyote howling in the distance startled Stiles, causing him to clutch onto Scott and I as he lost his balance. Unfortunately for me, I got pushed down the slope along with Scotts phone.
"Oh my god, Kelsey I am so sorry. I hate coyotes so much. They always sound like they're mauling some tiny, helpless little animal." He explained as Scott jumped down to help me up. "My bum's all wet now, and my joggers are probably ruined." I frowned as I brushed my bum in disgust.
Damn, I really liked these joggers as well. I hope mom can get the mud out. "I'm pretty sure they're my joggers anyway." Stiles told me as his attempt to gracefully jump down the slope failed miserably.
"You okay there?" I sniggered. Ha, karma.
Stiles stuck out his tongue. "It still works." Scott announced thankfully as he held his wet phone. Well thank god for that, we'd have to go on a scavenger hunt without that map otherwise.
"Let me see the flashlight." Stiles spoke, taking the flashlight out of my brothers grasp as he began to walk forwards. "I think we found it." Huh, that was quick. "Uh, why wouldn't they move it? Isn't it evidence?" I asked as we trekked closer to the scene of the car crash. "Probably too much of a pain in the ass to tow out." Stiles answered.
Well I guess I can understand that, the car is upside down and it's not like there's any point of it being moved now. As Stiles shined the flashlight on the car, I noticed there were what looked like to be claw marks? "Guys look at this. See those?" I asked, both Stiles and Scott noticing the claw marks too.
"Animal claws would be closer together, right? A lot closer." Stiles added as Scott placed his hand where the claw marks were. "Then it was a werewolf." Scott and I said almost simultaneously. Great, so now there's probably another psychotic monstrous werewolf lurking in town, and probably watching us right now, oh god, I hope not.
"So, my dad was right." But why would they kill Malia and her family? It just doesn't make any sense. What would they have done to piss off some maniac werewolf? The werewolf wouldn't have just killed an innocent family for no reason, would it?
Unless it just doesn't care about anyone or anything in its path. Stiles bent down to get a closer look inside the recked car. "What is that?" Scott asked, pointing at a tiny leg that is slightly sticking out. What the hell? Because that's not weird.
Stiles pulled out the small leg, only to reveal a creepy doll. "I hate dolls." I spoke as Stiles held the flashlight to the baby's freaky face, it's dead eyes staring into my soul. I was just about to to grab the doll from Stiles and throw it as far away as possible before the eerie electronic voice from the doll spoke.
"I'm hungry." At that moment, all three of us screamed from the top of our lungs, stumbling back with shock as Stiles dropped the evil baby on the floor. "I think I just had a minor heart attack." Stiles said, his heart beating so fast, much like myself and Scotts. Jesus Christ, this is exactly why I hate dolls, especially ones that talk. I mean who thought it was a good idea to give a doll a voice? They should know better.
"Maybe it was that doll came to life and caused the car crash." I mentioned as I finally caught my breath. "Chucky isn't real Kelsey, dolls are just plastic babies, they aren't capable of killing." Stiles reassured me while patting my shoulder. I was about to speak again, but I was interrupted by a loud growl coming from behind the car.
"Hey, guys, please tell me you see that?" My brother asked as he stared ahead into the distance. I offered my hand to Stiles as I helped him up before taking a look at Scott's view. A pair of eyes hiding behind a bush, taunting us.
Okay, so those eyes may or may not belong to the murderer who killed this family. And now he's watching us...awesome. He better not come any closer. "Yeah, we see it." I answered before Scott decided to run off after the growling murderer. "Wait, hey, Scott! Scott, wait!" Stiles shouted after him, but Scott was already too far gone to hear him.
"Great. What do we do now?" Stiles asked me. There's no way I'm chasing after Scott, besides he could be anywhere in the woods by now. "Well I don't know about you, but I'd rather wait for Scott to return, I'm too tired to run after him." I replied.
Stiles took a breath of relief. "Oh thank god for that, I'd never be able to catch up if you ran off too, my legs are only short." He whined. "Stiles you're like 5ft 10, and your legs aren't even short." I told him. "Okay but I can't ran as fast as you and Scott, you can't argue that. Anyway enough about me, why are you so tired?"
I let out a deep sigh before opening my mouth to explain. "There's been a lot happening around us lately, well, ever since Scott got bit. I mean if you think about it, it always comes down to us saving the town, and no one even knows what the hell is going on half the time. It's crazy."
"I thought you liked solving crimes and what-not?" He asked confused.
"I do, but it just hasn't stopped. Like it would be nice to have a break from it all once in a while." Maybe I will take Jackson's offer and go to the cabin with him and Danny, it might do me some good, but how am I going to leave with everything going on? I can't just up and leave, can I?
"Yeah I guess, but what can you do?"
"Life's a bitch."
"Yeah, got that right. Hey, I don't mean to pry, but what's up with you and Isaac? I barely see you two around each other anymore, is everything okay?" I guess he's noticed then, not that it was hard to, Isaac and I haven't been making much of an effort. "To be honest Stiles, I really don't know anymore. Everything was fine, it was amazing actually, but now? Well, it just doesn't seem real, you know?"
Now that I've said it out loud, it just makes me wonder why I even got back with Isaac? I know I love him still, that will never go away, but what if this relationship is doomed? We were great together until Allison ruined things, then all hell broke loose and now nothing's the same.
"So you don't love him anymore?" Stiles hesitated.
I paused awhile before answering.
"No, I do, that's what's making it harder."
"Making what harder? Are you going to break up with him?" He asked. Am I going to break up with him? Would it be for the best? I mean maybe it's what I need...what we both need. It's my fault for rushing into things, and I can't change that now, but I can try to make things better.
Oh I don't know, I feel like I could do with some space, time apart from Isaac and everything else, but I don't want to crush him. "I don't know, all I know is we need to sort some problems out, and then...well, I guess we'll see what happens from there." It's true though, we do need a good sit down and talk. I need to tell him what's on my mind and everything I feel, as well as the kiss with Jake.
"By problems, you mean Allison?" Stiles questioned.
"And Jake, yes." Stiles furrowed his brows, bewildered.
"Wait, what about Jake? I don't understand, what's he got to do with any of this, I thought he was out of the picture?" Oh I really wish that's the case sometimes. "Nope, he's still around, and unfortunately that happens to always be near me. He's like a bad cough that just won't go away."
"Aren't you two friends though?" Friends? I really don't know. I mean I still barely know the guy, he really doesn't say much about himself. But other than that, we seem to get along, well, when he isn't telling me to break up with Isaac or when he's kissing me. "I guess we were, but not so much anymore, everything's a mess." A big mess of confusion that I myself will probably never wrap my head around.
"Everything's always a mess, but since Jake just seems to be a mind fuck, and Isaac's a giant tool, it's probably an even bigger mess for you. Anyway, what happened, did Isaac beat him up again?"
"Yeah, well, it wasn't as violent, although more words were thrown at each other, it wasn't pretty. Jake just doesn't know when to give up, he keeps telling me that Isaac isn't good enough for me, or that I deserve better. And then he goes and kisses me like he's asking for trouble. Stiles, he's driving me insane, they both are."
"Wait, when did he kiss you? And why haven't heard about this?" Oh right, I forgot I hadn't told him yet. Well, I was meaning to at some point anyway, I guess now is the right time. I just hope he won't tell Scott or anyone else. Scott has his own problems to deal with, and now I've told Stiles, who probably already has a lot on his mind let alone my business.
"That's because no one knows, well, aside from Danny and Jackson, and now you. Please don't say a word to anyone, I don't want Isaac to find out from anyone but me, okay?" I said sternly. "Okay, you have my word, my lips are sealed. I can't believe you told Jackson before me, seriously Jackson?" He whined, while I rolled my eyes.
"Oh come on Stiles, he's not that bad, besides, you haven't said much about the whole Isaac being distant and Jake kissed me thing, what are you thinking?" I asked curiously, and slightly nervous about what might come out of his mouth.
"Are you happy?" He asked out of the blue.
"What?" Am I happy? What kind of question is that? He needs to be a little more specific. Does he mean right now at this moment, or for the last six months? "When you're with Isaac, do you feel happy? As in are you in a happy and healthy relationship?"
"Yeah, I guess." I replied.
"That's not a very convincing answer." What does he mean it's not very convincing? Of course Isaac makes me happy, he's my boyfriend. Okay now I'm just lying to myself, but it's not just because of Isaac, it's everything. You can't expect someone who's just lost their best friend to just be fine, because I'm not. Yeah, I might hold back tears and stop myself from being weak and pathetic, but that's how I cope.
"Well what do you want me to say?"
"The truth. Kelsey be honest, you can tell me. How do you feel when you're around him?" Great, so is Stiles a counselor now? "I don't know Stiles, maybe a little guilty? Angry, sad, and paranoid at times as well, but that's normal when you've been through a lot of things." I explained.
"Kelsey it's not normal, you're suppose to be happy and madly in love with Isaac, not anything like what you described. Look, I don't know what you'll do or say when you see him, but you could probably do with a good few days apart from each other, and I don't think living in the same house does much help either. You know what, you can stay with me and dad for awhile, he won't mind, you're practically family anyway."
"Maybe you're right, some space will do us some good. But first I really should tell Isaac what's going on." As much as it will pain me, I have to tell him, it's the right thing to do. If I hold it in any longer then my mind will explode, and I don't want anyone else to get to Isaac before I have a chance to explain it to him myself. I just hope he won't hate me or get angry and take his anger out on Jake again, or anyone for that matter.
"Okay, well whatever happens, I'm always here for you." Stiles smiled, as he gave me a soft pat on my shoulder. "Thanks Stiles." I smiled back as I began to walk ahead, not really know where I was going.
I suppose walking around is better than just standing here like a lemon, besides, we'll have a better chance finding Scott. I hope he's okay and knows his way around. This just brings back memories when we went looking for Laura Hale's body. Scott ran off as usual, Stiles well he got in trouble but that was bound to happen since his dad was also looking for the body.
Then I hid, though once sheriff Stilinski and Stiles left, I had to find Scott. It could've easily been me that got bit by Peter, sometimes I wonder why he didn't go for the both of us since I saw him in his monstrous form, circling the both of us. Maybe his target was Scott, or he just went for the weakest. Not that it really matters now since I'm a werewolf myself.
"It's no pro-"
"Huh?" I turned round to face Stiles since he didn't finish what he was saying, though he was nowhere to be seen. Then, just as I was about to call out for him, just in case he lost me, his familiar voice spoke from the ground.
"A little help please?" I looked down at him with confusion.
"Stiles, what are you doing on the floor?" I asked, giggling. "Oh you know, just chilling. What do you think, I tripped over!" He huffed as I grabbed ahold of his cold hands, pulling up from the ground. Someone's clumsy today.
Once Stiles was on both feet, I noticed something smudged on his t-shirt. "Yeah, and it looks like you fell in something too." Oh god, it smells nasty, and it's so bloody strong. "Jesus Christ." Stiles said as he looked down at his t-shirt to see a brown stain. "No, it's poo." I corrected, snorting with laughter.
Stiles gave me the look. Okay, he is not a happy bunny tonight. "Can you stop enjoying this." Stiles groaned. "Sorry, but it is funny." I laughed again while watching Stiles' nose scrunch up as he tried to wipe it off with a tissue. He's only going to make it worse.
"I hate you." Stiles whispered under his breath.
"Yeah, I am kind of a shit friend, aren't I?" I grinned. Oh this is so amusing, I should tease Stiles more often, he loves it. Stiles rolled his eyes. "Really Kelsey?" I looked at him, pretending to be sympathetic. This ones gonna be a good one. "You're right, it's not funny, that was crap joke."
"Oh my god, can you not."
I'm on a roll. I literally can't stop myself. "Sorry, I'm dung now." I chuckled, more to myself than Stiles. "You are so-" Stiles cut himself off. "I'm so, what? I didn't quite catch that." I spoke, though Stiles' attention was elsewhere. Huh, maybe he's ignoring my amazing puns.
"What's that over there?" Stiles pointed.
My eyes drifted to the direction of Stiles'. Hmm, I think we might've found something. "I don't know, a cave or something." I said as the both of us walked closer to get a better look. "Let's check it out." This might help us.
"It smells in here." I brought up, though the smell might also be Stiles, well, either way, it stinks. "I think this is a coyote den." Huh, maybe coyote is the other scent I can smell. "You're probably right. We should go and find Scott now, he should see this."
"Okay, but don't run off without me."
"I won't, come on."
As soon as I said that, Stiles and I went off looking for Scott. Though I don't think either one of us even know where Scott ran off to, which isn't exactly a good start. Stiles still has that torch on while he's running, probably so he can see where he's walking this time. "I think he went this way." I yelled to Stiles who was beside me.
It feels like we've been running for ages. I swear we even went around in circles a few times, and we're probably still running in circles now, which would explain the dizziness. Ugh I need a nice hot chocolate and bubble bath when I get home. Just as I was about to turn round to Stiles, I bumped into something hard. "Oh my god!" It screamed a few times, although I'm pretty sure Stiles screamed too. "Oh, it's just you." Scott said when he came to realize it was just Stiles and I.
"We think we found something." Stiles said panting.
"So did I." Scotty announced as we began to trek back to where Stiles and I had literally just come from. I'm surprised Stiles even remembers where it is, because I don't, at least I don't think I do? Wow what is wrong with me lately? Once we finally reached it, the three of us crawled inside the den.
"It's a coyote den." I told Scotty.
"Werecoyote." Scott corrected.
Stiles and Scott crouched down to look at what appears to be a small blue coat, which I and Stiles believe to be Malia's coat. "You see this? This is Malia's. Remember, it's the same one she was wearing in the photo." Stiles explained to our brother.
Scott didn't answer straight away, he picked up a ratty old teddy bear before speaking up. "We shouldn't be in here." He told us, which I soon understood what he meant by that. This den is Malia's home, and we just barged in, and now that our scents are going to be everywhere, it's likely she'd come back.
"What do you mean?" Stiles asked.
"She's not going to come back now. We just invaded her home. Our scent's going to be everywhere." Scott said while I crouched down closer to the boys. He's right, we shouldn't be here, but where else would she go if she won't come back here? Malia must be really scared, I can't imagine what's going through her mind. "If she's not going to come back here, where's she going to go?" I asked the boys.
"I don't know." Scott answered vaguely.
"Can you guys track her now? Do you think you've got her scent?"
"Maybe. But I'm better at this when I'm a full wolf. And I'm still worried that if I do it, I won't be able to turn back." That sucks for Scott, he must feel so helpless without his power. I hope this whole thing happening to my brothers, and I guess Allison, will stop. "The door's still open." Stiles sighed.
"I can give it a try, but I don't think I'll be much help on my own." Scott told us. "Well, I don't know if I'll be any good at tracking her scent, but I can give it a try too." I know I haven't had much experience with tracking scents, but both Derek and Peter taught me a little, so maybe I won't be totally useless.
"Okay but if we can't get to Derek, we're gonna have to find someone else to help." He's right. With my brother not able to transform, and myself, we're gonna need all the help we can get. "This is basically a crime scene, right? I think it might be a little out of my boss's league." Scott continued.
"And more in my dad's." Stiles added.
About twenty minutes after Stiles called his dad, Sheriff Stilinski and a few of his men came to the scene and inspected the area. I just hope they can find something useful. Finding Malia may help Stiles's dad with his job, although it's going to be hard since she's in coyote form.
"You're sure it was her?" Stiles's dad asked Scotty once he'd finished inspecting Malia's den. "I looked her right in the eyes. And they glowed just like mine." He said surely. "It makes sense dad." Stiles added.
"But it wasn't a girl. It was a four-legged coyote, right?"
"Well, okay. But yeah, see, that's the point that we don't exactly have figured out yet." Oh Stiles, he doesn't exactly help with the situation does he. "But if it was a full moon and she did change while her mom was driving, then anything could've happened." I spoke up. "Horrible things could've happened. Ripping, shredding, tearing things."
"Which is probably what caused the accident."
"Think about it dad, alright. They're driving, Malia starts to change, she goes out of control, the mom crashes and everybody dies." It does make sense that it could've happened.
You're never in your right mind during a full moon, not completely. It must've been traumatizing waking up after the full moon to see what she'd done to her family. "Except for Malia." I said. "She blames herself, alright, goes off running into the woods and eventually becomes trapped inside the body of a coyote."
The poor girl must be angry at herself everyday. If i were her and I killed my family, I wouldn't be able to live with myself. "That makes sense." Sheriff Stilinski pondered. Oh thank god, that's a relief, I was beginning to think he wouldn't catch on to what we've concluded. Sheriff Stilinski opened his mouth to continue. "In a Chinese folktale." Okay, well I guess I was wrong, he doesn't believe it.
"This is- this is insane. I need this kept quiet. The three of you, not a word. I don't want anyone hearing about this. I especially don't want Mr. Tate hearing about this." He continued. "Scott? Scott!"
"Sorry. What did you say?" Scott said once he snapped out of it.
"Oh, hell." Sheriff Stilinski said distantly as car doors closed behind, revealing Mr Tate approaching, and unfortunately my dad following behind. "Mr Tate." Sheriff acknowledged.
As Malia's dad came closer, he looked down, noticing the neatly rolled blanket Sheriff Stilinski had held in his grip, before carefully taking it from him, his eyes never leaving the blanket. "Mr Tate?" Rafael repeated as the sad man didn't respond.
"It's hers." Mr Tate said, referring to Malia.
"Alright, wait here." Rafael said to Mr Tate, probably about to take over the case, nothing new there. "Dad." Scott began, though dad interrupted before Scott could say anything else. "I'll talk to you two in a minute. I wouldn't mind hearing how your mom's okay with you both running around in the woods this late." Dad told Scott and I. "Asshole." I muttered, watching dad walk off, Sheriff Stilinski following behind.
