Chapter Twenty One

I stared up at the moon shining down on me and the stars that twinkled in the dark blue sky. Tears still slowly leaked out of my eyes, but at least I wasn't full out sobbing anymore.

I can't believe Leo. I mean, how could he? I could never have imagined that he would hurt me like that. I thought he understood me. I thought he loved me.

More tears streamed down my face as I hung my head, staring down at my paws. I couldn't help but think once again that Leo had left me because I was a runt. I mean, Stacy hated runts. If he left me for her, does that mean he hates runts, too?

I looked back up at the sky. I thought about all of the fun times me and Leo have had together: swimming and hanging out at the Hot Springs, laying on the grass and watching the clouds drift by, howling at the full moon, playing together, hunting and patrolling the borders of the territory. And finally, his deep blue eyes that I lost myself in every time I stared into them. They were like a sea of blue that I would search forever.

I watched the stars sparkling in the sky. The little white spots covered the blue sky. I stared up as I saw the stars align into two wolves. A lean but muscular wolf and...a runt.

It was me. And Leo. Our two shapes danced across the sky, howling and playing like me and Leo used to always do. A single tear slid down my face as I watched the two wolves in the stars nuzzle together.

I closed my eyes, silently crying. Then I heard it. A soothing, low pitched howl sounded behind me. I didn't howl a response. I just sat there and listened, my eyes still closed. The howl sounded again but closer. After a third time, I heard the wolf sigh. I couldn't take it anymore. I howled my majestic howl, keeping my eyes closed and focusing on the notes. The wolf howled after me, this time a little happier. I bit back a smile as I howled another time.

The wolf came to sit next to me, his fur brushing delicately against mine. "Kate," he whispered.

I opened my eyes slowly and turned to look at Leo. His deep blue eyes showed sadness and concern.

I couldn't speak. Tears suddenly burst from my eyes. I sobbed my heart out as Leo came closer to comfort me. I tried to speak through my sobbing, but Leo told me not to.

After a couple of minutes, I lifted my head from where it rested on Leo's chest. I looked up into his eyes and whispered, "How could you?"

Leo stared down at me sadly. "I'm sorry. It wasn't what you think..."

I cut him off. "Don't you dare tell me that!" I screamed in his face as I jumped up onto my feet. "You left me, your pre-mate, for Stacy, the wolf that despises me and the wolf I despise! You left me for a rotten brat! Am I really that bad, Leo?! Is me being a runt really that bad?!" Leo slowly backed away, fear radiating off of his fur, as I ranted at him, my fangs bared. I calmed down as I started to whisper. "You hurt me. I-I thought you didn't love me be-because... I'm a runt." I hung my head, tears falling from my cheeks.

Leo took a few steps forward. "Hey, I would never leave you, even if you are a runt. I don't care whether you're a runt or not. I love you for who you are. I didn't love Stacy. I was trying to help her. She tricked me. She..." I shook my head at him.

I sighed. "Leo," I looked back up at him, "I don't know about that." I hung my head again. "I just can't say that I believe you. I don't know if I can... trust you." I glanced up to see hurt in Leo's eyes.

"Kate, please," Leo took a step forward, his voice desperate, "you have to believe when I say I love you. I don't love Stacy. I was just trying to help her." This is ridiculous.

I chuckled. "I can't believe that you think that I would believe that. What, now you think I'm dumb?! That you can just lie to me and get away with it?!"

"Kate, stop!" Leo yelled at me, but not in an angry tone.

"No, Leo! You stop! I can't believe you right now!" I stared at him in disbelief and anger.

"But I'm not lying! Just listen to me, Kate!" Leo yelled, but once again, he didn't yell in an angry tone. "Stacy tricked me! She needed help, so I tried to help her. But it was all a trick!" Leo yelled desperately.

I shook my head again as I started to cry. "I'm sorry, Leo. But I just can't believe you." Suddenly, frustration built up inside me, forcing its way out. "I just wish I could know the truth!"

An image flashed in front of my eyes. I gasped. More images showed before my eyes, but they were blurry. Then they started to become more clear. I saw a dark gray wolf smirking in the forest. Stacy. She cried out for help, dashing off through the forest. She made her way into the clearing from earlier and continued to call for help. A few moments later, Leo appeared. My eyes cleared for a second, so I could look at Leo. "She was calling for help." Leo cocked his head but nodded. Then an image of Leo and Stacy in the clearing came back up. Stacy was sobbing in the ground.

"My little sister! She's hurt! She's hurt! Oh, my little sister!" Stacy cried. Leo stepped forward cautiously asking Stacy questions about what had happened to Dart. Stacy continued to sob and cry out. Leo finally came over and nuzzled against her, trying to get her to talk to him.

"You were just trying to help her, trying to find out what had happened to Dart," I said. It was more of a statement than a question. Leo nodded again. Hope flashed in his blue eyes.

Another image flashed in front of my eyes. I stood at the edge of the clearing watching. Stacy licked the side of Leo's face, and I yelled at him. I ran off through the woods as Leo jumped up. He leaped around at Stacy and growled. "How dare you?!" He snarled in her face.

Stacy didn't so much as flinch. Just smiled wickedly. "Awww, is the little runt hurt? Now, she'll never trust you. She will live a lonely life as an outcast like she should!" Leo growled at Stacy before he crouched down to leap at her. "Not so fast! If you attack me, you won't be an Alpha anymore. Heck, you might even get exiled. Now we don't want that, do we?" Stacy said in a baby voice.

Leo froze for a moment before he dashed off into the forest after me. Stacy's laugh rang through the forest as Leo ran to find me. "It can't happen. I have to get to her. She has to believe me. I love her," Leo was whispering to myself. The images disappeared to be replaced with a concerned Leo in front of me.

I hung my head. "You didn't know that she was tricking you. You truly thought she needed help. You were just doing your duty as an Alpha." Leo nodded his head again. "Yo-you said you loved me?"

Leo smiled and took a few steps forward. He licked the side of my face and looked into my eyes before whispering, "I have always loved you. And I always will."

I smiled and licked him back. "I love you, too." I curled up into Leo's soft fur as the two of us laid there on the rocks and watched the moon and the stars dance at the reunion of the wolf and the runt.

I woke up as the sun started to rise from over the horizon. I lifted and blinked the sleep out of my eyes. I looked around to see Leo curled up next me, his breathing still steady and even with sleep. I nudged Leo with my nose to wake him up. "Leo, it's time to get up," I whispered gently.

Leo groaned and shuffled, trying to go back to sleep. I sighed, shaking my head. I nipped Leo's side hard but not enough to draw blood. Leo yelped as he jerked up in panic. "What was that for?" He looked at me before he started to lick his side.

I walked over and licked the place where I nipped him. "It's time to get up," I said calmly as I looked at him. Leo sighed. "Come on; we have jobs to do."

I trotted off with Leo following me. We made our way to the village and then to the Alpha Cave. Once we were there, Alpha would give us our jobs for the day. I walked into the Alpha Cave.

The Alpha Cave is a huge hollowed out cave specifically for all Alphas. And when I say huge, I mean, huge. The Alpha Cave can fit all of the Alphas in the pack, which is one hundred Alphas, and about one hundred to two hundred omegas. Also, in a corner in the back of the room, there is a hole in the ground that leads to a slightly bigger cave where the omegas of the pack would go if we were attacked.

So in the morning, we would come here to see what we had to do for the day and then report to Alpha in his den since he didn't want to wait all day in here.

I walked to the front of the room where Alpha and Captain Mace were yelling out orders for the day. I pushed through the crowd of wolves, getting closer to the the front.

"Nile, patrol the south border along the edge of the hunting cliffs. Maya, patrol the village with Nathan and Blossom. Hawk, lead a hunting patrol through the hunting cliffs. Kate," Alpha spun around to look at me, "lead a hunting patrol through the Golden Forest, and then patrol the Deep Woods with Leo."

I nodded as Alpha went straight back to barking out orders and called several Alphas to me. "Dana, Snow, Dawn, Dusk, let's go!" I called. I raced out of the Alpha Cave with Leo by my side and the other Alphas following me.

I smiled at the thought of the day ahead of me and the strong wolf running next to me. I love being an Alpha and I love Leo.

Hey, guys! How are you? I worked as quickly as I could to get this chapter out the day after the last chapter. I know you must have been made at me for splitting Kate and Leo, but there back together! Yay! Well, in a few chapters you're going to hate me again, I can tell you that so don't say I didn't warn you. The picture at the top is of the wolves in the stars that Kate saw, and I found the wolf animation video on YouTube, and I thought it was perfect for this chapter and how Kate was feeling. The wolf was also white like Kate! Yet, the other wolf was brown instead of black for Leo but oh well. The song is Impossible by Shontelle. Anyway, have a great day and have fun! Ask questions and comment! Thanks! :)
