Chapter 3
Han and Minho sit together on their couch, legs almost intertwined as they finally feel the noise in their house turn to silence. The tranquility stills, an almost tangible feeling in the air trying to stop either of the mates from saying anything. It's Han who makes the first move, standing up to get two cups of water before going back to where Minho is. He's got his head down, hands lazily hanging in between his legs. His hair only thinly hides the look of contemplation on his face. Han understands, he truly does, but no words from his own mouth would help his mate.
Taking the look on his mates' face as a need for space, Han sets the waters down and goes to check on their new additions. Chanhyuk and Suhyun are both in bed sleeping. The two pups, brother and sister, are blissfully unaware of the distress their new adoptive parent is feeling downstairs, which Han intends to talk to Minho about later. Both pups are a few years old, yet their still not old enough to truly grasp the drastic change all four of their lives are about to take in becoming a family. Han brushes his sons' hair aside when it lands near his mouth. Chanhyuk is the older pup, his sister Suhyun only 2 years behind.
They're beautiful pups and in any other situation, Han and Minho wouldn't have had the chance to adopt them. They were always so happy, always taken care of by their mother. It was only after getting the emergency call from the hospital that things were put into motion.
A few years earlier they had met a beta girl named Somi, quickly becoming a trusted friend to the two mates. She had had a son named Chanhyuk and was pregnant with a baby girl she had planned to name Suhyun. Her mate had passed due to circumstances so very quickly they had offered her support, helping her with a job, babysitting, and more. They had even been present during the labor and birth of Suhyun. They had always enjoyed seeing the pups with their mother always trailing along with a wistful smile.
Months after the birth, Somi had gotten her life put together once more. Getting into the routine of juggling two pups, Somi had approached the two mates. It wasn't a secret the two had been looking for a surrogate to bear them a child. Somi happily volunteered, and despite their initial hesitation to get their friend involved, they agreed. They had consultations from specialists, therapy, and long talks between the three. Months later they had an appointment ready to start the first treatment. That was until they got a dreadful call.
Somi, always a careful driver, had gotten into an accident. She couldn't be saved, and it was a miracle that the pups had been with Minho and Han at the time. If they had been in the car, neither would have survived. Grieving for the two had to be paused in priority of holding a funeral for their close friend as well as getting parental rights to the pups. Neither of the mates would allow the two to be put in the system and after long talks, the two agreed on adopting the two kids.
They've gotten into a routine the last few months. Its been hard but they've managed as a new family. They make sure to remind the pups of Somi as often as they can, letting them remember their mom as the caring and kind woman she was. She was a strong person, and they both promised they'd try to be just as strong for her two kids. They have ups and downs, but as Han reminisces about the times with his friend, he knows they'll manage just fine.
Han hums a song to himself as he walks downstairs. Minho isn't on the couch anymore, but he can see his mates' shadow dancing around in the kitchen. Joining him in the kitchen, Han sees why. His mate is heating up some leftovers, going from the fridge to the air frier and microwave. Han joins his mate in dancing around the kitchen and eventually they both end up at the table with full plates, glasses of water, and another of wine. Both mates are giggling, beaming at each other. The silence doesn't seem so scary anymore, so Han breaks it. "Honey, how would you feel about a party for the kids?" He asks, munching on leftovers. Minho, cheered up by his mate, laughs and nods his heads. "Let's officially welcome the pups into the family," Minho says. Han agrees, softly leaning over to kiss Minho. "For all of us," Han says. Minho's smile doesn't waver as he nods, waiting for Han to continue. "For all of us," Han repeats. They both know Somi, their fiery best friend, would definitely agree to a party.
