New Mission
Kaelie's heart beat steadily in her chest, never faltering, as upset about that as she was. Her mind walked her through the events that had just taken place: the crazy woman entering the room and shooting two people in the leg, her standing up-
She'd stood in the middle of the room and challenged a psychopath to shoot her in the heart. And it was the safest she'd ever felt, wrapped in the arms of death, ready to hug back with triple the strength as the bullet pierced the muscle of her heart.
Except that had never happened, because she'd stupidly enough admitted it was what she wanted. And that had, ironically, pained her.
And then Juliet had appeared, hugging her and using her as a shield. And twenty minutes later, Kaelie was agreeing to a death pact.
Well, whatever happened next, Kaelie knew she couldn't die. And that was a fact. So what she needed to do, was find a purpose. A reason to live. She'd told Juliet that she still had books left to read. That wasn't as much a lie as just not so important.
No. Kaelie wanted to live because she had a new mission.
Now, her own living arms wrapped around her knees, her brown and green hair in knots around her head, heart beating calmly and confidently, she made her decision.
Her mission wasn't to read every book that existed, as much as she would continue to make progress on that. It also wasn't to get herself killed, as it had become recently. It wasn't even to save lives, though when opportunities came to do so, she would take them.
Her new mission, was to teach Annie to read.
She may have lost her books in the woods, but she found a stone on the floor. And on the walls, she started to scratch, creating white marks wherever she dragged the small piece of rock.
She wrote her own story, a short one. Made of many small sentences, getting longer as she went, as Annie would improve. She wrote words down on their own next, simple ones yet common ones. Words she would need to know.
And then she paused, smiled, and whispered to herself:
'Mission ANNIE is a go.'
