Chapter 7

As Jaxon dragged me through the crowds of people looking at art, but I mean who looks at art now days? I had to hold back a retort about how I couldn't see anything, but he was so persistent, he kept dragging me away. Soon I realized we had left the art room.

"Hey Jaxon, why does this feel like a kidnapping?" I asked, but he ignored my question. I heard footsteps behind me, so I guess my friends would be able to tell what happens if bad went to worse.

Soon we went through the heavy doors and I was struck by a cold gust of wind. We were outside. We walked silently across the dew covered grass, and I couldn't help but feel a shimmer of joy that I was in the fresh air. Even though I didn't know Jaxon that well, I knew enough that if he told me to get in a car, I'd fight.

After a few minutes of walking he swung open a gate, and lead me to a hard paved road. It took me a moment before I realized we were on the track. The track? I thought, Why would he want to show me something here?

"Okay now take my hand," He commanded, his voice so strong and smooth I couldn't help but obey. I could feel his smile, as if he'd been expecting me to put up more of a fight. "Now run."

"I can't." I snapped. Had he dragged me all the way out here just to hold my hand and tell me to do something I couldn't do. Or maybe he had forgotten I was blind.

"You can too. I saw you in the hallways." When I said nothing he sighed, then added, "I think I know what it is Raindrop. You're scared. You're scared to fail, but even worse you're scared to succeed. That would mean you lived a whole year of your life not doing what you loved."

"You're right."

"I am?"

"I'm scared... that you're going to slow me down!" I said, then took off. I could sense his smile and we took off running.

. . .

I could feel the wind in my hair. I felt the sweat forming on my upper brow. Dirt was plastered to my face, that had blown up as I'd ran by. It was just like old times. Only the whole world was so much clearer. I could smell the freshly cut grass, I could hear the sound of my opponent's feet, hitting the ground matching my pace.

I heard the sound of my friend's vigorous clapping. I could feel Jaxon's muscles straining to keep pace with me. I let a smile form on to my lips. I released his tight grip and into long strides I crossed over the place where my friends were cheering. Jaxon was panting for breath now, and I held up a finger to show I was number one.

"You..You sure... are... fast!" He said between gulps of air. We'd run two miles, I think, and we'd run them pretty quick. Or it would have been if I'd been warming up, from before the Accident. Now I was out of shape and I, too, was gasping for air.

"Come on Jax! You know it was fun!" I said, after I swallowed enough air.

"I said my friends call me Jax." He said, mimicking me from the other day, "And we're not friends."

I rolled my sightless eyes, a task I'd gotten quite good at recently. I felt Mercy grip my hand and start signing so fast that I couldn't even understand her. I was to tired to even try. I gave her a stern look and she slowed her hand movements.

That was so amazing! I didn't know you could run like that. Or I guess I did, but we weren't really friends back then... But anyways that was great! She signed and I smiled. I heard footsteps coming from behind me and I turned and heard Mr. Meyers.

"Ashley. The office just got some bad news. It's about your mom."
