Chapter 18
I remember there was one fall, when it snowed in October. I was five years old then. In Maryland, it was common for snow to fall, but that was the only year that it snowed so early. I remember the weatherman said it was one of the first times in nearly twenty years.
I remember that day. It was the first Tuesday in October. It was dark outside when I awoke, not that it mattered to me. I got dressed as I always did, in a tank top and sweatpants, due to the fact it was getting colder by the day. Fall was finally losing it's grip on the world as winter's icy breath approached.
I waited in the living room, until a knock sounded on my door. Jaxon. I smiled to myself as I walked to the door, and swung it open. Almost as soon as I did a blast of cold air hit me, causing me to stumble back a bit.
"Good morning Raindrop." Jaxon said, standing at the door.
"Good morning to you too. Happy Thursday." I greeted.
"Well you seem to be in a good mood today." He commented.
"I just enjoy running with the cross country team." I stated, and I mentally debated on whether or not to put on a hoodie.
"With me as your guild." Jaxon teased.
"Sure." I said. "You ready to go?"
"Ready whenever you are Raindrop." He said and I sighed. Then I took his hand and we were off.
We walked to the high school, a short, pleasant time where we just got to enjoy the cool air. Especially today. Today the wind was howling, and blind or otherwise, I think I would've been blown away if it weren't for Jaxon keeping a steady grip on my hand.
At least I knew he had a strong grip. For the past few days I had fantasized what all my friends looked like. Each one had different facial features, hair colors and styles, and most of all, eyes. I found it difficult to decide what color eyes they would have. I think it might have been because, before I lost my vision, I read people's eyes. They were the window into the soul, after all.
Now my mind often times wandered to Jaxon. A boy new to the school this year. There was no chance to have ever have seen him before, and he claimed not to be a 'pretty boy'. Or at least when I met him, he didn't.
In some ways that seemed like a lifetime ago. I suppose Jaxon had changed my life, for the better. He never judged me because I couldn't see, or wasn't popular anymore. He gave me a second chance at doing the thing I loved most in the world. And, most of all, taught me how to love again.
There was something about him, that I couldn't help loving. From how he called me Raindrop, to his teasing. I remember how at first I'd thought he was annoying and a slight stalker. But that day in the rain, after I'd found out about my Mom, he'd sat with me.
The boy walking next to me had let me cry in his shoulder as the rain poured down. Let me speak my fears as lightning flashed across that darkened sky. Had held me close as thunder shook the world. I suppose, that was when I realized I loved him.
Although, I wasn't going to say it aloud. I was too afraid. Too afraid to open up my mouth and speak three simple words. I didn't want to be hurt like I was before. I never wanted to be hurt like that again. It felt like I was burning from the inside, out.
Actually something was burning my skin. Brushing it off, I felt a wet tingle on my fingers. Looking up, another fell on my forehead. It was so cold it burned, but there was no mistaking the feeling of the first snowflake of winter.
"It's snowing Raindrop." Jaxon whispered into my ear. I smiled, softly, joyful I was awake while the rest of the world slept, getting to be in the first snow of the season.
For that moment, it was just Jaxon and I. Silent, silhouettes of the people we are, before the sun rose. And for once in my life, the moment didn't end, but stayed frozen in my mind, as the snowflakes fell to the cold ground.
