How to Get Out of Jail
And helllooo people. Just a reminder, italics is dragonese.
"So what are we going to do?" Astrid whispered, trying not to gain attention of the guard on night shift.
"We have to figure something out now. And I dont think trying to escape is going to work." He replied, counting the number of guards that had increased since the shift change.
"And we can't surrender either. We won't. We have to do this the proper way."
"I know. We can't risk anything that will harm you or the dragons."
"Or you babe." She squeezed his hand and he smiled under his mask.
"Do you think-uh maybe not."
"What?"
"It's nothing."
"Hiccup." He could sense her persistence.
"Okay. Uh. Okay. You've heard the stories about berk and how the chief has been looking for us right?" Astrid nodded, "Well um, maybe just maybe have a chance of getting out of here."
"How?"
Astrid listened as he explained his theory of how they could get out of jail with their dragons' limbs and organs intact.
The next day.
Hiccup and Astrid had not slept at all once they had set their plan. Though they were sure it would work, they still could not stop the nagging feeling that something might go wrong.
Astrid and Hiccup were just sitting, her head on his shoulder, as they watched the sun rise and the hoards of hooligans gather round the arena, awaiting the trail of the two strangers who had been brave enough to consort with dragons.
The prison door opened and Hiccup and Astrid were handcuffed by the guards, before being pushed out, into the middle of the arena.
Insults and threats were coming from all directions and Hiccup winced when someone called them 'useless devils'. Astrid sensed his slight distress and nudged him.
As he was looking at her, Stoick raised his hand, silencing his people. Hiccup looked back.
"A meeting with the council had taken place last night to decide what to do with you scoundrels. Gothi, our village elder suggested we question you before we reach our final verdict."
"I'm the reason we are here. So I'll answer your questions. Just, leave her out of this."
"No," he said, voice as stubborn as the day they left, "You will both answer to your crimes against the rules and regulations all vikings have abided by in these 300 years. And if I do not like what you have to say, I will slaughter you and your beasts without hesitation."
"Fine. But I am warning you. We are not people you want to mess with." The vikings laughed.
"You're laughing now but remember. We may have a night fury and a deadly nadder with us, but that doesn't take cowardice to happen. It takes perseverance, acceptance and bravery. Something vikings wouldn't be able to do." Hiccup nodded in agreement and Stoick frowned.
"Why are you on my Island?" His voice echoed across the arena, making it seem louder than it already was.
"Well uh let's see. It was a nice day. We had decided to take a long flight and nice days never really last when we want it to be, sooo thunderstorm! We were crashing and then some idiots decided to throw a stupid net at us and we ended up with a minor concussion. So, thanks for that," he ended with his hands flaring in the air around his face. The vikings clearly recognised the sarcasm in his voice. But the sarcasm seemed familiar. Like they'd heard it before.
"You're welcome" A voice- Bucket- called out. Many vikings shook their head as Mulch gave a fish to his best friend to keep him distracted.
"You are lying. You came to attack us and you failed. So much for a night fury."
"Can I bite his head off?" Simultaneously, both riders, as well as Stormfly, rolled their eyes. Astrid stepped forward.
"Do you seriously think he's lying? We never planned to come here. Heck. We never wanted to be here, in a place we detest. Not when nothing we have said in the past has gone theough your thick skulls. But no. Your people decided that they could shoot at us. You're the one who decided to imprison us. Did we ask for this? Did we tell you to confine us to a prison cell?"
"Ok. And breathe," Hiccup informed, trying to hold her back as much as he could. But a mad Astrid was a bad Astrid. And he didn't really want to get in the way of that.
"You ruined what was probably going to be one of the most important days of my life!" She almost screeched. (You know. Like in the flash in a deleted scene where Ralph accidentally presses the emergency button during iris and Barry's honeymoon and iris becomes really mad.)
Astrid breathed heavily as a few angry tears ran down her face. She hadn't meant to say it like that but she couldn't help it. She could of been on dragon island with Hiccup swimming in the lake they had discovered when they found the entrance to what they thought was a cave. It was a spot only they knew about and it was magical. She could of been dancing with Hiccup as the sun set and as he sang to her. They could of been laughing and having fun without all the care in the world. Though there was nothing wrong with the proposal happening, it annoyed her to no end that they had to be on Berk when it happened. And she knew that Hiccup felt the same.
"Why do you defy the gods and us with it? Why do you hate this place? What have we done to you apart from being proper vikings? You should hate yourselves for the treachery that you have caused and the sins you have brought upon your lives. You should be ashamed that you dont act like a viking should." Astrid began to move forward again, but Hiccup grabbed her arm with both arms and shook his head.
"Ashamed? I think that you should be ashamed. Weren't you the reason your son left in the first place? Weren't you what made him run away? He tried to show you a better way but you abandoned him and left him to be treated like he was useless, a runt. He tried to prove himself to you, to be the heir you wanted him to be, but you drove him away. If that is what a proper viking is than I don't want any part of it."
"And neither do I," Astrid continued, clasping his hand in hers,"If you can't be free from a society that judges people based on their victories, than what's the point of being a viking at all?" Gobber gasped, remembering the letter he had rehearsed so many times. So much so that he could recite it out loud perfectly.
"It looks like you haven't changed at all. Hmm. I guess I had too much hope for clearly, a lost cause." Gobber could hear the hurt in this man's- who he was beginning to think was Hiccup- voice.
Stoick was baffled. This man's words. They were impossible.
"How do you know about my son?" He demanded, "How?"Gobber had a feeling why.
Hiccup would of been flustered if he hadn't been prepared for this. Apart from Astrid's outburst- which he was quite proud of- it seemed that one of the three plans they had discussed had come into play. And although this was a plan they were less keen on, it was the best way to get out of a mess they didn't even make.
Astrid squeezed his hand and tapped his palm twice before passing something to him. Hiccup let go and subtly nodded.
"There's only one way I could know so much about your son Stoick. But can you guess what?" Its because is your son Stoick.
"I DEMAND THAT YOU TELL ME NOW!"
"Stoick." Gobber said.
"YOU DARE TALK ABOUT MY SON LIKE YOU KNOW HIM."
"Oh but we do."
"Stoick." He was sure it was them.
"YOU CANNOT KNOW MY SON. MY SON IS DEAD." Yet he still held out hope that he wasn't.
"STOICK!"
"WHAT GOBBER?"
But he didn't have a chance to say anything because all of sudden the lady was running towards the cell where the beasts were kept and both humans were shackle free. No one could react as the door that trapped the dragons opened and a night fury and deadly nadder pounced all the way to where the man and women had been.
A thunder of war cries echoed around the stadium as vikings began to take their weapons out and bang them against the cage. The man held out a metal contraption in the air and the night fury roared. The contraption clicked and revealed a sword, engulfed in the flames of helheim itself.
"Before you do anything, I'll answer your question Stoick. The reason we know so much about your son." Astrid grabbed her axe, which was still with Stormfly.
That axe! Gobber thought. He looked at her parents and it seemed that Mr Hofferson had recognised it as well.
"The reason we never wanted to be here in the first place." She took her helmet off and Hiccup did so as well. Mrs Hofferson gasped and the arena went silent.
"This is wha' I were tryin to tell ya Stoick."
The woman had blonde hair and blue eyes and looked almost exactly like the lost shield maiden that had belonged to the Hofferson clan. The man was less recognisable to the vikings, but Stoick would recognise those forest green eyes anywhere.
Impossible. It-it cant be.
Standing on front of him were two people he never thought he'd see again.
"I am Astrid Hofferson."
"And I am Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III" He looked straight up to his father's bearded face,"I am your son."
Last night
"How?"
"We're going to give Berk what they want. Or more specifically the chief."
"You mean us don't you." He nodded.
"It's our best chance if we want to keep all four of us alive."
"I know. But we need to do this properly if we want to get out of jail."
"I have an idea."
And that my friends is How to get out of jail. Reveal your identity and let all hell loose.
Ok. That probably won't work in really life but if the shoe fits.
I actually loved writing this chapter. All the mini speeches and the build up to the reveal. As well as the cliffhanger. I can't wait for the next chapter.
Bug out sky riders. 👋
