Chapter 10 - Loss
Sam hummed as he walked through the kitchen with his glass of water. It was getting late so nearly time for his nightly call with Jason but... He had something to take care of first.
He and Anya agreed they wanted to take things slow, but they had been together for a few months now and did the normal couple things... Go on dates, have the occasional makeout session, but nothing too serious. Although they wanted to change that.
Sam approached her door and knocked, he was nervous but excited. He'd never... With a girl? No.
After a minute the door opened and there she was, "Hi Sammy." Anya hummed.
"Hi Anya." He smiled at her,"I was wondering something. How would like to... God, how do you ask this-"
"Say it how you want to." Anya took his hand.
"Would you like to sleep with me?" He asked bluntly.
Anya blinked,"I did say say it how you want to." She bit her cheek.
"You did." Sam nodded, feeling his face heat up.
Anya noticed this and tilted her head,"Sam, have you ever done this with anyone?"
"Not a girl."
"Oh Sammy." Anya cupped his face and gently pulled him in, closing the door,"Of course I do."
Sam smirked at her,"Well then, let's get started."
Anya laughed and locked her door before she kissed him.
*********************************
Sam smiled as he looked up the the ceiling. Wow...
"Are you sure you haven't done anything with a girl before?" Anya turned to him, moving her hair out her face.
"Only ever guys." Sam shook his head, turning to her as well.
"So I'm your first girl?" Anya gasped.
"You're my first girl." Sam nodded.
"I feel very honored to be the Sam Grayson's first girl." Anya pulled the cover over her.
"You get some sleep, I've got to finish something before bed." Sam sat up.
Anya looked at him,"You'll come back... Right?"
"Of course." Sam assured her, leaning over and kissing her cheek.
Anya smiled softly,"Love you, Kitty."
"Love you too, darling." Sam smiled, pulled on some clothes and walked out with his phone.
Anya wiggled her feet happily and laid back down.
Sam stood oustude of Anya's room and closed the door as he dialed Jason's number. After a few rings, Jason answered.
"Hey Sam."
"Jason! I did it." He told him excitedly,"Me and Anya."
"You and Anya what?" Jason raised a brow.
"Had sex." Sam spoke quieter, just in case someone was listening.
Jason stayed quiet for a minute before he clapped,"Well done, man!"
Sam smiled softly, leaning against the wall,"I miss you, Jaybird."
"I miss you too, Catboy." Jason chuckled.
"I'm gonna ask Dick to see if I can come visit soon." Sam told him.
"I'd like that. But I'm super busy right now- Like, I'm so close to catching Joker."
"Be careful, Jay." Sam sighed.
"I will be. I always am." Jason assured him.
"No you're not, you're reckless and impulsive."
"Oh, you know me best." Jason chuckled,"I'll be okay, you spend time with the girlfriend. Get another round in. Good for the body."
"Jason, promise ne." Sam sighed.
"I promise, Sam."
"I'll see you when I come over." Sam nodded.
"Love you, man." Jason sighed.
"Love you too, Jason."
The phone was then hung up. Sam sighed and put his phone in his pocket before waking back into Anya's room.
"Hey, is Jason okay?" Anya yawned.
"I think so." Sam nodded as he took off his hoodie,"He said he's close to catching the Joker."
Anya looked at him,"I mean that's good but- It's the Joker."
"I've told him to be careful, I don't want him running into these situations alone." Sam laid down next to her.
"Hopefully he doesn't do anything rash." Anya held his arm.
"If he does, ill kill him." Sam pulled up the covers,"I've told him I'm visiting soon."
"Yeah? That would be good." Anya nodded and kissed his shoulder.
"I'm excited, I miss him." Sam smiled softly.
Anya chuckled,"Should we try get some sleep?"
"We should.' Sam nodded.
"Good. Because I'm exhausted after our antics." She hummed.
"I'm just that good." Sam kissed her cheek.
"Don't boast." Anya rolled her eyes playfully and tapped his chest.
"Fine, fine." Sam hummed, wrapping an arm around her.
"I love you." Anya leaned closer to him.
"I love you too." Sam held her.
Anya leaned onto his chest and closed her eyes. Sam smiled and rested his arm over her as he closed his eyes too.
*********************************
"God I'm starving." Gar went to the kitchen.
"And my shoulder hurts." Sam sighed.
"Do you want something for it?" Kory went to the pill drawer.
"I'm sure it'll be fine." Sam shook his head.
"As long as it's not broken."
"It doesn't hurt that much." Sam assured her.
Kory pointed as a warning,"I'm heading to change."
"Alrighty."
"So, did ya do it?" Gar whispered to Sam as Anya sat in the living room.
"Did I do it?" Sam blinked.
"Sex." Gar said with a cough.
Sam looked around before he nodded.
"Sammy!" Gar clapped.
"Shh." Gar covered his mouth.
"How did it go?" Gar smirked.
"I'd say it was enjoyable."
"Oh you're a big boy now."
"I've had sex before Gar, just not with a girl." Sam nudged him
"Well you're a big big boy." Gar pointed.
"Am I now? Sam chuckled.
"The biggest boy." Gar laughed.
"Now you just sound silly."
"What do ya want to do?"
"Hm." Sam checked his watch,"Well, it's nearly time for me to call Jason."
"Have fun babe." Gar hummed.
"I will, hun." Sam kissed his cheek.
Gar waved as he went into the fridge. Sam hummed as he took out his phone, tapping in Jason's number. Although... It rang out. Weird. Jason usually answered when it was him... So he rang again. And... Nothing.
Maybe he's busy... Yeah, maybe he's just out with Bruce. Sam tried to convince himself bit something felt….. Off.
"Everything okay?" Gar handed him a water.
Sam took the glass,"He didn't pick up."
"Maybe he's busy. He's Jason."
"I know, but he knows I call him around this time." Sam sighed and put his phone away,"I'm probably overthinking it."
"Probably."
"I'll try later." Sam shook his head.
"That's a good idea." Gar hummed.
Sam smiled and patted his shoulder.
"Sam? Gar? You wanna come watch a movie?" Anya asked.
"Sure." Sam grinned.
"Good." Anya grabbed a blanket.
"What movie are we watching?" Gar asked as they walked over.
"Maybe something horror." Anya shrugged
"That sounds nice." Sam sat down in between them.
Anya yawned and leaned against Sam.
*********************************
"I loved that movie." Sam told Anya as they walked into the kitchen.
"I didn't, Gar nearly shit himself." Anya chuckled.
"Hey!" Gar crossed his arms,"It was scary."
"It was not." Anya pointed.
"Was too." Gar huffed.
"Guys, hush." Sam sighed.
"You love us really." Anya kissed his cheek.
"You know I do." Sam hummed,"Now, I'm going to try and call Jason again."
"Let us know if you get through." Gar looked at him.
"I will." Sam nodded as he took out his phone.
"I'm gonna go make some food." Anya hummed.
"I'll come with." Gar nodded to her.
"Good."
Sam put in Jason's number and dialed it... Only to get no answer.
"Come on, asshole. Answer your phone." Sam muttered as he tried once more.
And... Nothing. Maybe... He should just leave a voicemail. That might be best. Jason will get it eventually.
Sam sighed,"Jason, i don't know where you are right now but I'm getting worried. Can you please get back to me when you have the time? Even just a minute to say you're okay? That would make me feel better... I'll talk to you later, Jaybird."
"Any answer?" Anya spoke from behind him.
"No answer, I've left him a voicemail." Sam turned to her.
"Hopefully he's-" Anya began but Kory walked in.
"Guys?" She was hesitant.
"Kory? Whats up?" Sam raised a brow.
"Can we all- Can we sit down? And Gar, can you get Connor?" Kory sighed.
"Uh- Sure." Gar ran off.
It took a minute or so but soon, all the teens were sat down.
"What's this about Kory?" Anya held Sam's hand, everyone could tell something was wrong.
"It's Jason." She sighed.
"Jason- Is he okay?" Sam tensed.
Kory crossed her arms,"Jason died... Last night."
Sam froze,"... What?"
"You can't be serious." Connor sat up.
"He can't be.." Sam shook his head.
"As much as I hate to say it... Jason knew the consequences of defying Bruce and he still went out after Joker- It was selfish and stupid." Kory shrugged.
Sam shook his head, walking away from the group. Sure, Jason was reckless and he probably didn't think things through but he'd promised to stay safe...
Anya looked at the others before she quickly followed after Sam. Sam was outside of his room, leaning against the wall.
Anya sighed,"Oh Sam." She hugged him.
"It's not fair.."
"I know Sammy... I know." Anya let out a shaky breath.
"God... Why Jason?" Sam held his head.
"I don't know." Anya shook her head,"I'm so sorry."
Sam sighed and turned, pulling Anya closer to him.
"I got you." Anya kissed his head.
"You've... You've got me."
*********************************
"Bruce says you guys can pick a room." Dick sighed to the Titans as they arrived at the Manor.
"I can't believe we're actually here." Gar looked around.
"You really lived here?" Connor turned to Sam.
"I did." Sam sighed as he walked along the corridor, his hand resting on a door,"This was my room."
"Can we see?" Anya hummed.
"Uh, sure." Sam nodded, opening his door.
"It's... big." Gar chuckled.
"He hasn't changed a thing." Sam sat down on his bed, just the way he left it.
"Everything's the same?" Anya looked around.
"Its all the same.' Sam nodded.
Anya sighed and laid down beside him, putting her head on the pillows.
"Comfy?" He asked.
"I could sleep for days." Anya closed her eyes.
"Realistically... That's not possible unless you're in a coma." Connor spoke slowly.
"Its just hyperbole, bud." Gar patted his shoulder.
"Oh- Right." Connor smiled.
Sam sighed,"Its weird... Being back, y'know?"
"I know, it will feel weird." Gar sat on the chair.
"Maybe I'll try and look around, see if everything's the same everywhere else."
"Are you sure?" Gar looked at him.
"I'm sure." Sam nodded,"Dont break any of my stuff."
"I'll watch them." Anya hummed tiredly.
"I'm sure you will, hun." Sam walked out, gently closing the door.
There was one place Sam wanted to look... Jason's room. Maybe there'd be clues, an explanation for why he did that... Or at least something to remember him by.
Sam finally walked to Jason's room and took a deep breath, opening the door. It was just as he pictured it.. Messy... The covers were still a mess, bed wasn't made. Chemistry books on the side-Which made no sense, Jason hated science.
Sam raised a brow and picked up a book, flicking to a page which was marked with a folded corner. It was some chemical stuff. Jason never liked Chemistry so why would he have these books?
"This makes no sense." Sam sat it down.
"What does?" Connor spoke from behind him.
"Weren't you- Nevermind. It's these books." Sam pointed,"Jason never liked chemistry, so why has he got these?"
"Maybe he had a sudden change in his life." Connor shrugged.
"Maybe." Sam shook his head.
"It's a shame." Connor sighed.
"Yeah, a shame." Sam walked past him, he knew there had to be secrets elsewhere.
The BatCave. That he entered by typing the passcode onto a secret compartment in the grandfather clock.
When he entered he saw Bruce scrubbing the floor.
"What are you doing?" Sam questioned as he walked down.
"The blood... It's hard to get out." Bruce sighed, standing up before turning to his youngest son,"Sorry."
Sam looked down at the stained floor, everything still felt so... Fresh. He shook his head and sat down on one of the wheeled chair, by one of the many computer screens
Bruce put the cloth in the bucket and looked at Sam,"Joker back at Arkham?"
"He belongs somewhere worse for what he did." Sam shook his head as he began scrolling through the computer.
"I agree." He sighed.
"Why didn't he get a proper funeral, Bruce?" Sam questioned,"He was your son, wasn't he?"
"He did. He's laid next to Alfred in the family cemetery." Bruce looked at him.
"Jason would've wanted people there, me there. I couldn't say goodbye to him.." Sam looked up at Bruce.
"He didn't have much family."
"He had us." Sam shook his head,"He had friends who cared for him, who wanted to be there for him."
Bruce sighed and turned away, turning to a board that had clues towards something.
"What's that for?" Sam glanced at the board.
"There's a new player in Gotham. He's killed seven already."
"What's his name?"
"I don't know yet." Bruce put his hand on his chin.
Sam rolled his eyes and turned back to the screen. He accidentally clicked a button and what popped up was... Pictures of children? Some looked younger than him.
"You're not meant to see that." Bruce quickly turned it off.
"Who the hell were they Bruce?"
"Nothing to worry about." Bruce sighed.
"Bruce, who are they?" Sam stood up,"New fucking kids to pull into the hero life?"
"I'm not- I'm just looking."
"Just looking? What are they, toys to you? Is this a gane?"
"Gotham- Gotham needs a Robin."
"Bruce those are children, they shouldn't have to protect the city." Sam shook his head.
"Samuel-"
"No Bruce! You can't keep doing this." Sam stood up sharply.
"Don't shout at me, I'm still your father." Bruce pointed
"You're using these kids, Bruce." Sam pointed back,"In my eyes you've already broken that rule you have. Jason is dead because of you!"
"Jason went after Joker by his own choice, I told him not to!" He spoke.
"You know Jason, you can't just tell him not to do something. Did you even pay attention at all?" Sam questioned,"What about the chemistry books in his room? Did you know about those?"
"Jason never liked science, he wouldn't have them in his room."
"Well, he does Bruce. I checked."
"Why would he have those books?" Bruce shook his head
"That's why I'm asking you, he's been staying here."
"I haven't... We haven't been together much." He shrugged.
"I should've known better, I should've kept him back at the tower."
"Jason wanted this."
"Jason is dead."
"I know! I know, Samuel."
"You killed your son, I hope you're proud of yourself." Sam walked past him.
Bruce sighed and leaned against the drawer, shaking his head.
Sam turned to him,"If this is too hard for you, to do it alone... Bruce, don't do it anymore."
"I can do it fine." Bruce nodded.
"I'm sure you can." Sam shook his head as he left.
