Chapter 10: Started With A Game
I felt butterflies on my stomach when Zack grabbed my hand and started walking us away from the guy he keeps on giving cold stares.
I glanced back at the man standing before the LCD screen, he gave me a grin before waving goodbye as he watch us walk away.
I turned to glance at Zack who's still holding my hand, his eyes were a lot softer this time.
He stopped and turned to me and I stared at him blankly not knowing what to do next.
I felt so uncomfortable holding his hand.
"Don't ever smile in front of anyone you don't know, " he spoke in a soft convincing voice, and at the same time, he spoke like he didn't know what he was talking about.
"Huh?" I hummed in confusion before I muttered looking away, "Uhmm...can you... let go of my hand?"
He abruptly let go of my hand in realization and also glance away placing his hand on his packet.
That was awkward.
I clutch my hand at the side of my jean not knowing how to get rid of the awkwardness between us.
"Do you have the tickets?" I asked but he spoke at the same time,
"I have the tickets,"
We chuckled at our sudden unison.
"Let's go, " he smiled at me.
We moved our way towards the escalator station 4, and before we went pass through a ticket verification machine, Zack hand me a blue ticket card.
Like what everyone did, I placed the ticket card to the scanner, and the orange small barriers automatically slide open.
We walked our way to the waiting area where we met a crowd of passengers waiting for boarding.
Some people are waiting patiently, drinking their cup of coffee, reading a newspaper, scrolling to their phones and there are these people who seemed to be always in a rush, they kept on glancing up and down to their watch like they are always running after something.
When the train arrived, people start moving their way inside, but others are so inpatient and start pushing their way through.
We were waiting in line for boarding when I rushed to help the old man beside me that almost fell to the ground when a woman suddenly walked pass him bumping his shoulder.
"Are you okay, Sir?" I asked in concern looking straight to his flecked eyes.
Zack grabbed the old man's bag on the ground and gives it back to him.
"I'm fine, thank you, " the old man smiled at the both of us.
He has a very friendly smile, his eyes were a sparkling charcoal black in color and he seemed to see everything.
"Are you alone, Sir?" Zack asked.
"Call me Mr. Cooper, and yes I am alone, I'm heading to Delca to meet my daughter," Mr. Cooper replied in his natural trembling voice.
"We're dropping at the same place, you might want to come sit with us, Mr. Cooper, " I suggested giving him a friendly smile.
Mr. Cooper glanced at me and Zack, "Oh, I don't want to bother both of you, " he grinned.
"No, its okay, right Zack?" I grinned turning to Zack for a response.
He turned to Zack still with the his friendly smile.
"It's fine with me, " Zack replied.
"It's glad to know that there are still few youngsters with a good soul, " Mr. Cooper grinned before gesturing his freckled hand to the train's entrance, "Shall we?"
"Let me help you with your bag, Mr. Cooper," I suggest gesturing to take the bag on his hand.
He chuckled when Zack takes the bag before I did and stepped inside the train. I gave Mr. Cooper a smile before we followed after Zack.
The train I took before has normal long blue seats like what I always saw on television, but this one is different, the seats are grouped by four with a table and also have overhead bins like planes.
The crowd inside the train is really busy, some were finding a seat, some were arranging their baggage and some were already asleep.
Me and Mr. Cooper head to the direction where Zack was settling his and Mr. Cooper's bag to the overhead bin.
I assisted Mr. Cooper through our way by grabbing his curved shoulders. His body is slightly bent because of his age and he is also walking unsteady, but I can say that he is strong and wise.
When we found our seats, I was about to take my backpack to place it over the overhead bin when Zack grabbed it from my hand without any words.
I silently took a seat before the window and Mr. Copper was still grinning at the both of us as he takes the seat before the hallway.
I glance at Zack but he just gave me a straight deadpan stare before taking the seat in front of me.
"What's wrong?" Mr. Cooper asked.
I turned to Zack in front of me who's scrolling down on his phone before I glanced at Mr. Cooper, "Nothing, " I smiled.
"Are you sure?" he asks but this time he was asking Zack.
"Huh?" Zack hummed looking up, "Yeah, everything's fine, " he glances back on his phone.
The train started to move and I also started to feel more excited. I glanced out the window as the train moves faster, and it slowly reveals the natural light outside the tunnel.
"Whoah, " I gasp when the window revealed a view of a peaceful rice field.
The wind outside seemed so gentle that it makes the green leaves dance so soft and there are people crouching down as they plant every hope on the soil.
I was like a kid seeing a rainbow for the first time.
I glanced at the person in front of me and he was also looking outside the window.
"The beauty of the countryside," Mr. Cooper mumbled before turning to me and Zack with a smile, "how about we play a game?" he suggested.
"I like that, " I bubbled.
"What game?" Zack asked.
"It's an old game called 'Question Answered', I used to play this a lot on my younger years, one would be asking a question but both will answer, are you in?" Mr. Cooper asked with a grin.
"I'm in, " I beamed.
"I'm fine, " Zack turned back to his phone.
What's wrong with him?
"Oh c'mon, Zack. Don't be a party pooper,"
He stared at me deadpan before curving a small grin at the corners of his lip.
"Okay, count me in,"
"But I'm not joining the both of you, " Mr. Cooper said.
"Why?" I asked.
"Because only two people can play this game, but fate will be joining too," he smiled at me.
Fate?
Sounds fun for me.
"But first, I will tell you the most important rule of the game," he gave us both a glare before he continued, "you must promised to tell the truth,"
"What if we broke the promise?" Zack asked.
"Then you will face the consequences, " the old man replied.
"What are the consequences?" I asked.
"Bad luck," he curtly replied.
"Oh, " I glanced at Zack.
I never played that game but I started to have a bad feeling about it.
"What's your biggest fear?" Zack asked with an amusing grin.
Oh, he's really into it.
"Darks, bugs, and the idea of being unable to do the things I like, " I answered honestly.
"That was deep, " Zack let out a chuckle.
"What is yours, young man?" Mr. Cooper asked.
"I'm going to answer my question?" Zack asked a little surprise.
"Yes, that's the game, didn't you listen?" I grinned at him.
He raise up his black cap and brushed his fingers through his hair before wearing it back again. I can see that he's starting to regret his choice of question.
"Okay, I have fear of heights, " he said.
"and?" I asked further.
"and..." he glanced at me a little annoyed, "Teletubbies, " he admitted.
I chuckled looking down.
I'm sorry, I can't help it.
"That was when I was young, I had a terrifying dream that they kidnapped me," he grinned as he finds his own fear funny. "I was so terrified."
"It made me realize that I didn't really know a lot about you, " I chuckled.
"You're playing the game pretty well, " Mr. Cooper also chuckled.
"What's your secret talent?" I asked.
"I think I can make people fall in love with me, " he smirks and leaned back with confidence.
Oh really?
"Now, that was corney, " I glanced at him making it looked like I was disgusted.
"Then what do you think is my secret talent?" he gave me a smile.
"Why are you asking me? How would I know?" I grinned, before I remembered the only time he amazed me, "Oh, you can use the sky as a map, I don't know how you did it but you found me that night,"
Zack stared at me with an amusing grin, "that's it?"
"Oh! and you cooked really well," I beamed almost jumping on my seat, "wait, you should answer that your own."
Mr. Cooper was grinning at us like he really enjoyed watching.
"I think your secret talent is that you are so clumsy," Zack chuckled.
"No I'm not and that's not even a talent, " I denied.
"Yeah, but you should accept that you're a very clumsy person,"
I crossed my arm, "Okay, then give me five proofs that I'm clumsy, "
"Only five?" He chuckled, before reciting the hell out of me, "you got lost in the middle of the night, you left your credit card and go shopping, you hit your head on my guitar that made your nose blee-"
"Okay, I got it, i got it. Please stop," I don't want my ears to bleed.
Zack and Mr. Cooper started laughing.
"I think that's a great talent, " Mr. Cooper acknowledged.
"What's the thing you badly want to achieve recently?" he asks.
I sigh, "the only thing I badly want to achieve recently is my list, " I answered.
"And mine is to find someone, " he said.
"Who?" I ask.
He just stared at me.
What? Is he trying to commence a blinking contest with me this time?
"What's the thing you most regret?" I ask ignoring his ignorance.
"Leaving, " he answered curtly still with his deadpan stare.
"Leaving?" I ask trying to make him answer further.
He looked away.
"What's yours?" he asks.
"Nothing. I regret nothing, " I said.
He glances back at me, he was about to say something when Mr. Cooper spoke.
"I had my first love when I was 8 years old, and now she is my wife. I want to ask a question both of you should answer," Mr. Cooper grinned at both of us. "If you have, who's your first love?" he smiled in amusement.
I glanced at Zack and he was already staring at me.
"I don't think I have my first love yet, " he looks at me straight in the eyes.
He's doing it again.
I can see that he's trying to tell me something, but he wanted me to read it from his eyes.
"But, I think I met her already, " he continued.
I look away and turned to Mr. Cooper, I gave him a soft smile before I spoke. "I have my first love when I was six, " I admit.
"Six?" Zack's sudden thrill voice made Mr. Cooper and I stare back at him.
"It's not love, you were six back then, " he sounds irked.
"but it is, " I stated.
"How can you say?" he asks leaning back on his seat and crossing his arms.
"I was really happy whenever I saw him and I will always miss him if not, " I smiled at the memory.
"That doesn't mean you already love him, " he debated.
I frowned at him.
"Then what do you call it?" I ask a little frustrated.
"Do you think that was love, Mr. Cooper?" he asks turning to Mr. Cooper.
"I think you two are, " he replied with an amused grin.
There was silence.
We are what?
I turned to Mr. Cooper, "We are what?" I ask.
