Chapter 27: Croke Park, Ireland
'I'm comin' up so you better you better get this party started'
Beep. Beep. Beep.
Probably one of the most annoying sounds I could wake up to. Makes me want to keep a stick near the bedside to smack it with.
Hearing my complaints, the beeping sound ceases but is soon followed by Lily's incessant, obnoxious snoring.
I suddenly remembered why we never had a lot of sleepovers.
Beep. Beep. Beep.
Urgh!
"I'm up, I'm up" I mumbled tiredly, blindly searching my fingers around to stop the annoying sound. Well one of them.
If I muffle her snores with a pillow, will I somehow in the process suffocate her?
The places my mind goes to before 10am....
I walked over to her bed on the other end of the room and gently shook her shoulder.
"Lily, wake up"
She grunts into the pillow and turns away from me.
I sigh, she's going to make this difficult isn't she?
I try shaking her shoulders again but when I get no response I proceed to turn her over onto her back.
"Lemme sleep" she whines, her voice croaky. With her eyes sealed shut, she grabs one of the pillows and hugs it to her chest and turns away from me again.
Not fully awake yet myself, I easily get frustrated. I walk over to the large windows and pull the blinds apart, revealing the brightly shone sun that just so happens to be shinning in her direction.
Unfortunately, she just covers her head with the duvet.
Running out of options, I decide to have a shower and brush my teeth.
After coming out of the bathroom, fully dressed and some light makeup on, Lily hasn't moved from her previous position.
My journey of mission drag Lily off the bed is interrupted by loud knocks sounding from the door.
"Rise and shine!" a deep muffled voice follows. I stare at the door in confusion having not recognised the voice.
Louder rhythmic knocks follow after some time and Lily groans at the sound.
"No sleeping in today squeaky! Let's hop to it!" and that's when I recognise the voice of our unexpected visitor.
Lily abruptly sits up and glares at the door.
"YO! GO DIE IN A HOLE! CAN'T YOU SEE-" her verbal abuse is cut short by the sudden paleness of her cheeks and she flies off the bed and into the bathroom to empty her stomach.
Not wasting a second, I rush to the door and pull it open, revealing Harry on the other end with his fist raised midair.
"Harry" I hiss "you realise that there are other people on the floor right?"
A bright smile appears on his face showcasing his dimples.
"I'm sorry" he bounces up and down in excitement "I'm just excited!" and I roll my eyes. Morning people. They disgust me.
"About what this time?"
"Well" he starts, still smiling "today is your first day of tour. And then it occured to me when I woke up that I'll be spending the next six months of it with my favourite person in the world!" he pulls me into a side hug.
"Is that suppose to be an insult?" I teased.
"Oh hush" he scolds, looking down at me, not removing his arm off my shoulder.
"Have you had breakfast yet?" he asks.
"Does it look like I've had breakfast yet?" I counter.
He hums to himself, his features becoming serious,"Hmm. You're right. You're grouchier than usual"
I feel my lips part slightly at his words. His lips tug up into a small smirk making me slap his chest in annoyance.
"I despise you" I said narrowing my eyes at him.
He holds his hands to his chest "I hold a deep regard for you too squeaky"
"You are the reason why my reputation in kindergarten was ruined, you know" I said referring to the idiotic nickname.
"What reputation?" he teases and I shoot him a glare.
I'll have you know that my kindergarten days were my glory years.
"But how was it my fault?" he questions.
"Because of that stupid name that your pea-sized brain came up with!" I exaggerated "once my dad heard it, he teased me about it. Then Tia started using it and the next thing I know, the entire school knew!"
"Thieves" he mutters under his breath and then chuckles at the irritated expression on my face.
"Tell you what, by the end of the tour, I'll come up with a different one and if not, then I'll stop calling you squeaky. Better?"
I nod "Much"
"Great! Now that that's settled" the bright smile appears again and he extends his arm towards me "Breakfast?"
I pretend to think about it but I already had my answer. How could I turn down that smile? Who would turn down that smile?
"I guess it couldn't hurt" I say indifferently but the smile that appears soon after gives me away.
He links our arms together and leads to the elevator. I halt my steps not even three steps away from the door causing Harry to stumble backwards at my abrupt movements.
"What's wrong?" he asks concerned.
"I forgot I had a hungover best friend hunched over the toilet bowl" I yell over my shoulder already racing back into the room.
I poke my head out the door when I realise he wasn't behind me.
"I won't be long. Do you want to come in?" I inquire not wanting him to cancel breakfast plans but also not wanting him far away from me either.
Thankfully he agrees.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Breakfast was great. I quite enjoyed myself.
My stomach did too.
The restaurant wasn't too crowded and it was so quiet and peaceful. Well until we arrived.
Harry and I mainly teased Lily about being hungover until he decided to show her some mercy and ordered her a ginger tea, saying,
"It fixes everything"
While I couldn't agree more about the benefits of ginger tea as a remedy, I still can't get past the pungent, spicy flavour that is zesty and sweet at the same time. Harry does though. Always had a thing for it.
One of the many differences that we shared.
My reminiscing about this morning's events are interrupted by a deep Irish accent.
"Miss De La Rosa, we have arrived"
I turn my head to look out the window.
Croke Park. Wow....
I'm actually intimidated by the height of it. It's said to be third largest stadium in Europe.
Some of the biggest names in music have performed here. Tina Turner, Elton John, Bon Jovi, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers and more. Being here feels so surreal.
I groan "Is everyone this formal?"
"I'm Mia, the stylist" I pretend to formally introduce myself.
He looks at me through the rear view and chuckles at my antics.
"Patrick but call me Paddy. Liam's bodyguard" he introduces with a smile.
"It was a pleasure riding with you, Liam's bodyguard"
"You too and good luck in there" he gestures to the gigantic building structure.
"I'm going to need all the luck I can get"
He chuckles and then says "I think she will need it a bit more than you" referring to Lily dressed in sweats passed out on the backseat next to me.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Surprisingly, it wasn't as difficult to get Lily out of the car as I'd hoped.
The building stood before our eyes slapped the sleepiness right out of her system.
Being transported backstage was an experience on a whole other level.
I know the boys were here by around 3 for sound check and gates don't open until 6 yet there are thousands of teenage girls lined up outside the venue already.
A few of them gave us strange glances as security escorted us backstage.
What was their problem?
Maybe we looked weird showing up at a concert with suitcases?
Navigating our way through the narrow, dimly lit hallways, it's not hard to notice how hectic everything is.
There are faces that I recognise from last night at the hotel restaurant bustling around either carrying heavy equipment or have clipboards and pens held in their grasp.
I feel overwhelmed. And I haven't even started yet.
The baritone sound of a soft head voice with a slight edge penetrates through the speakers offering a much needed distraction from the chaos.
I'd recognise that voice anyway.
It takes everything in me not to stop and just listen to the angelic voice that seems to transport me into another world.
We stop in front of a door with a sign that says 'Hair and Makeup'
"Guess this is our stop" Lily says loud enough for me to hear over the voices coming from the speakers and opens the door with one hand while the other holds the handle of the small suitcase.
Walking in, I'm temporarily blinded by the bright lights.
There are two tall white tables with vanity mirrors situated next to each other in the middle of the room and black salon styling chairs.
In the corner, there is a black couch that's looks so damn comfortable, I'm tempted to nap.
After unpacking the makeup and hair products and tools, Paul comes in to let us know that we need to start now if we want to finish all of them on time.
Because I'm more experienced styling hair, I took Zayn, his being the most time consuming, Louis, because he was rather....particular about the style he wanted, not that I minded, it was fun trying something new and Harry, only because he pushed Niall off the chair.
Boys....
Makeup didn't take as long because there wasn't much work to be done.
The conversation in the room was light. Only because I was trying to concentrate on getting it right and finish on time. I know when I start to get into the groove of things, then I'll interact a bit more with them.
I don't know how Lou does it. God bless her soul. It was nerve wrecking to be working with such a timeframe. I felt like I was taking an exam or something.
The other problem was, it was like dealing with children. Harry wouldn't sit still while I did his hair, Zayn kept falling asleep, Louis sprayed himself in the eye with the hairspray and Niall probably used out half of the mousse because he liked seeing how it expanded in his hand. Liam was honestly the only sane one.
That was hair. Alone.
I don't even want to get into what happened when it was time for makeup.
"Thanks Mia!" they shouted on their way out of the room to get dressed.
Lily and I slumped onto the black couch, exhausted.
"I have to endure six months of this" she says monotonously "this is your fault"
"You wanted to come!" I defended.
"Yea but that was before this!"
I go to respond but the click of the door opening catches my attention. Paul enters.
"Wonderful job with the boys" he praises "shall I bring in the others?" he asks observing our positions on the couch.
What?
Others?
Lily and I bolt off the couch at his words.
"What do you mean others?" I ask confused, same time Lily's voice goes up a few octaves when she asks "There's more of them!"
Paul seems to be amused by our questions.
"Yes. The opening act, 5 Seconds of Summer"
Lily looks like she's about to faint but I couldn't be more in my glee.
I've always wanted to meet them ever since I saw their cover of Next To You on YouTube. I'm not a huge fan, but I like their stuff. They have something special and no doubt the world will see it too.
"Is it our turn yet?" a platinum blonde haired head pops through the door looking into the room curiously.
Lily and I look from them to each other, knowing what's about to happen.
Yup! This party is just getting started!
The real question though,
Will I make it to the end?
Will I survive?
Or will I just end up passed out on the lawn and wake up the next morning to the smell of grass and not knowing where the hell I am?
