We hope to see you again, soon.
The cheap Styrofoam cups full of black coffee feel like heaven in my hands. After 9 solid hours on the road, my eyes and limbs feel heavy. Nothing out of the ordinary, as no sleep is generally what my nights consist of. Walking back to the car with 2 coffees, a bag of peanut M&M's, 3 bags of gummy bears (Miles' favorite), and 2 waters, I feel satisfied that we've got what we need for the next few hours on the road before arriving at our motel.
From the drivers seat, Miles eyes me as a walk back to the car. He opens the door and reaches his hands out, collecting the bag full of our snacks.
"Snacks, eh? Did you happen to see any Gummy bears?" His eyes widen, hopeful.
"No. I did look, though." I lie. I know that the moment Miles sets his eyes on the 3 bags I got him, they'll be gone within minutes. And its not even lunch yet.
"Damn. I'm hungry. Wanna stop for lunch somewhere around here?"
My stomach growls loud enough for Miles to hear it, answering his question.
"I'll take that as a yes."
"I'm starving," I laugh. "Lunch sounds good."
"Sweet. Let's drive around and check some places out. We don't have a lot of time, it's best for us to get as far as possible from home within the next 48 hours." Miles squints as he checks the time on his Rolex watch.
"I'm not picky. Its up to you where we eat. You're right though, we should keep on the move."
An hour later, after breakfast at an old-school diner (that had absolute shit service, may I add) we're rolling out of Camille. Stomach full, we head out to find a motel. As we pass the exiting sign of Camille, the words "Thanks for visiting! We hope to see you again, soon!" in a corny font make me snort.
"Such a misleading sign. They make that place look like fun. I didn't think it was anything special." I laugh. "Who wants to live in a town that's only 5km in total? You can walk down the street and technically be 'out of town.' It's too small. Nothing to do."
"I'd love to live somewhere like that one day."
I look over to Miles, and to my surprise, he's not joking.
"And why is that, Miles?" Curious, I eye him.
"It's peaceful. Quiet. Small. You'd have everything you need in arms reach. You're looking at the bigger picture; pointing out the obvious features, and turning them negative. Living in a small town means you're isolated, does it not? You're alone. Off the maps. No one bothers to bother you. Isn't that exactly what you want, Saige?"
"I wasn't thinking about it in that perspective. Just because it's a small town doesn't mean its clean of the same type of people back home." I admit.
I mean, I guess he's right. I want to be alone, off the maps; I want my own paradise away from... everyone. Everyone but him.
"I have a surprise for you," I say, changing the subject. "I lied to you earlier when I said I didn't see any gummy bears."
"No way, you got some?" The tone in Miles voice immediately changes.
"Sure did, three whole bags. All yours." I reach for the bag of snacks I bought earlier at the gas station, pulling out a bag. Tearing it open, I take a few and pop them into the mouth, before handing Miles the bag.
"I knew you were here for a reason." He teases.
