Chapter Three

They arrived in Korea in a matter of hours from the base. Once Ultron got a new body, they reequipped themselves and left immediately. Ultron told them to wait outside until one of the bots came, so they did. By the time they came, the lab had been taken over, and the Cradle had already started making Ultron a new body.

Ira watched as the Cradle created a new body, made of vibranium. There was a yellow stone in the center of the body's forehead. It swirled with light, and sent beams of yellow light into the body. Dr. Cho had plugged Ultron into the Cradle, 'initiating the consciousness stream' as she called it.

"I can read him," Wanda said as she walked closer to the Cradle. "He is... dreaming."

"I wouldn't call it dreams." Dr. Cho told her. "It's Ultron's base consciousness, informational noise. Soon-"

"How soon?" Ultron asked. "I'm not being pushy." He put up his hands in defense.

As they talked, Ira noticed Wanda put her hands on the Cradle and close her eyes. She tilted her head slightly, and then screamed. Pietro and Ira rushed to her side. Ultron stood up, and Wanda looked at him with betrayal.

"How could you?" She asked imploringly.

"How could I what?" Ultron asked.

"You said that we would destroy the Avengers, make a better world." Wanda told him.

"It will be better," Ultron replied.

"When everyone is dead?"

"That is not-! The human race will have every opportunity to improve." Ultron said.

"And if they don't?" Pietro questioned.

"Ask Noah."

"You're a madman." Wanda told him.

"There were more than a dozen extinction level events before even the dinosaurs got theirs. When the Earth starts to settle, God throws a stone at it, and believe me, he's winding up. We have to evolve. There's no room for the weak." He said as he leaned over the Cradle.

"And who decides who's weak?" Pietro asked. As Ultron was distracted, Wanda used her powers to destroy the Scepter's hold on Dr. Cho.

"Life." Ultron said. "Life always decides." He looked up. "There's incoming. The Quinjet. We have to move."

"That's not a problem," Dr. Cho said, and she disconnected the Cradle.

Ultron sighed, and blasted Dr. Cho to the ground.

"Don't do this." Ultron told them. "We'll still destroy the Avengers, and you'll be spared."

"You said the weak would be destroyed," Ira told him. "You said that life decides. But it's not life deciding. It's you. Life didn't decide to destroy the Earth in the blink of an eye. You did. This isn't right."

"Ira-" Ultron began.

"No," she told him. "Save it." She stepped back towards the others, and Wanda put a hand on her arm. Emilia stepped towards him.

"Emilia?" Ira asked.

She shook her head. "We can rule everyone. We can finally live the life we deserve, that was taken from us! If the world is destroyed, we can be the survivors. We can start a better world, with no Avengers. We can rule everything with a guiding hand, and we can let the people be free. This could never happen again! Imagine that!"

"No," Ira said. "Emilia, that's not freedom."

"It is to me," Emilia said. "It's the conquerers, or the conquered." She walked over to Ultron, and stood beside him. "And you chose the losing side."

There was a loud noise above. "The Quinjet," Ultron said. Pietro grabbed Ira and Wanda, and ran them out of the lab. "No guys, wait! I-" Ultron called after them, but they were already gone. "They'll understand." He muttered. "When they see they'll understand."

Pietro stopped in a market to take a break. "I can't believe Emilia chose his side," He said, taking deep breaths.

"I can," Ira told him. "There was always something off about her. She was too... ruthless."

Pietro was about to respond, when Wanda stopped him and pointed to a small TV in a stall. It pictured Captain America fighting Ultron on a truck from Dr. Cho's lab. "Should we help?" Wanda asked.

"Yes," Ira responded immediately. "We owe it to them for what we've done." She pointed to the screen. "They're on a train." Pietro nodded, and grabbed them both again. He sped them over to the train, and dropped them alongside it. When they got on the train, Ultron had punched Captain America, and was standing over him. Pietro sped at Ultron, and pushed him over.

Ultron turned, and was about to go after Pietro, but Wanda twisted two luggage racks to block his path. "Please, don't do this," he asked.

"What choice do we have?" Wanda asked him. "Where's Emilia?"

"She's with the Cradle," Ultron told them.

Ultron looked at Pietro, and was about to blast him, but Ira threw up a shield using her powers, and the beam ricocheted off, and blasted a hole in the front of the train. Ultron blasted another hole in the side, and flew off.

Captain America ran to the control room, and found the conductor unconscious with a head wound. "Civilians in our path," Captain America told Pietro, and he sped off. "Can either of you stop this thing?" He asked Ira and Wanda.

Wanda nodded. "I'll go help the conductor," Ira said, and ran to the control room. She found the conductor leaning on the dashboard, bleeding from the head. She was unconscious, but she appeared to be breathing.

Ira put her hand on the woman's shoulder, and sent a flow of healing energy into her head. She watched as the wound slowly healed up, but the conductor remained unconscious. She ran back out of the room, and found Wanda using her powers to stop the train. Ira sent a burst of energy at the wheels like Wanda, and together they stopped the train.

They walked out of the train. People were helping the others that were in the train get off, and Pietro was hunched over with his hands on his knees, breathing heavily. Wanda ran over to him. "Should I use my powers?" Ira asked.

Pietro shook his head. "I'm fine. I just need to take a minute."

"I'm very tempted not to give you one," Captain America said as he walked up to them.

"The Cradle. Did you get it?" Wanda asked him.

"Stark will take care of it." He told her.

Wanda's eyes widened. "No he won't."

"You don't know what you're talking about, Stark's not crazy."

"He will do anything to make things right," she told him, concerned.

Captain America stared at her for a second, then turned away. "Stark, come in. Stark. Anyone on comms?" He asked.

"Ultron can't tell the difference between saving the world, and destroying it. Where do you think he gets that?" Wanda asked him.
...............................................................................................................................................
Captain America strode into the lab with the Enhanced behind him. "I'm gonna say this once." He told Stark.

"How about 'nonce'?" Stark replied while looking up from a computer. After Seoul, they had flown back to the Avengers Tower quickly, sitting in a tense silence the way back. They entered the lab to find the Cradle plugged in and active, with Stark and Dr. Banner working on computers.

"Shut it down!" Captain America ordered.

"Nope, not gonna happen." Stark replied, walking over to another monitor.

"You don't know what you're doing." Rogers told him.

"And you do?" Banner asked him. "She's not in your head?" He pointed at Wanda.

Wanda stepped towards him. "I know you're angry."

"Oh, we're way past that. I could choke the life out of you and never change a shade," Banner told her. Wanda looked remorseful, and she stepped back.

"Banner, after everything that's happened-" Steve stepped forward.

Stark looked at him. "That's nothing compared to what's coming."

"You don't know what's in there!" Wanda yelled.

"Ultron was going to use it to destroy the world!" Ira exclaimed. "We don't know how powerful it is!" She watched as Pietro rolled his eyes, then sped around the room pulling out wires and cords. He stopped next to Banner, holding a large steaming cord. He dropped it on the floor.

"No, no. Go on. You were saying?" Pietro asked. Just then, a bullet shattered through the glass beneath his feet, and he fell.

"Pietro!" Wanda cried. Ira looked down.

Barton had shot from under him, and put his foot on Pietro's leg. "What? You didn't see that coming?" He smirked.

Stark turned and looked at the monitors. Power loss critical. Captain America, noticing he was about to do something, threw his shield. It bounced around the lab, destroying monitors. Sparks flew, and Stark summoned his Iron Man arm. It coated his hand, and he fired it at Rogers, who flew back.

The rest of Stark's suit came, and a red mist started to glow around Wanda's hands. Banner stepped behind her, and wrapped his arm around her neck. She gasped in surprise. Barton ran up from the room underneath them with his gun drawn. Ira threw a beam of energy at him, and it hit him in the chest. He fell backwards, stunned.

Rogers got back up and jumped at Stark, who fired at him, and they both flew backwards. Wanda zapped Banner and stood back. She blasted him again, and he slid backwards. Thor ran into the room with his hammer, and jumped on top of the Cradle.

"Wait!" Banner yelled as Thor charged his hammer with a bolt of lightning and sent it into the Cradle. They all watched in shock as the Cradle burst open and a... creature, a red and yellow form crouched on top of the Cradle. Ira ducked and covered her head as glass crashed around them. Mist rose up from the machine, and the creature looked at them.

He was formed like a human, but with red skin overlaid in some parts with metal. In the center of his head was the stone from Loki's scepter. He slowly stood up, and looked at all of them, his gaze landing on Thor. He suddenly flew at him, but Thor struck him with his hammer, and he flew through the lab, only to stop at a window. He stared at the skyline, mesmerized by the blinding lights.

They walked down from the lab, and watched as the creature turned toward them and lowered to the floor. "I'm sorry, that was... odd." He looked at Thor. "Thank you." A yellow cape flowed from his shoulders, copying Thor's.

"Thor. You helped create this?" Rogers asked him.

"I've had a vision," Thor told him. "A whirlpool that sucks in all hope of life, and at its center is that." He pointed to the stone in the creature's head.

"What, the gem?" Banner asked.

"It's the Mind Stone," Thor replied. "It's one of the six Infinity Stones. The greatest power in the universe, unparalleled in its destructive capability."

"Then why would you bring it to-" Steve began.

"Because Stark is right." Thor stated.

"Oh, it's definitely the end times," Banner muttered.

"The Avengers cannot defeat Ultron." Thor told them.

"Not alone," The creature continued.

"Why does your 'vision' sound like JARVIS?" Rogers asked, stepping towards the Vision.

"We... we reconfigured JARVIS' matrix to make something new," Stark said, looking at Vision.

"I think I've had my fill of new." Rogers told him.

"You think I'm a child of Ultron?" Vision asked him.

"You're not?"

Vision shook his head. "I'm not Ultron. I'm not JARVIS. I am... I am."

"I looked in your head," Wanda told him. "And I saw annihilation."

"Look again." Vision said.

"Yeah, her seal of approval means jack to me." Clint stated.

"Their powers," Thor looked at the Enhanced. "The horrors in our heads, Ultron himself. They all came from the Mind Stone, and they're nothing compared to what it can unleash. But with it on our side..." He let the sentence trail off.

"Is it?" Steve asked. "Are you? On our side?" He looked at Vision.

"I don't think it's that simple." Vision told him.

"Well, it better get real simple real soon." Barton said.

"I'm on the side of life," Vision began. "Ultron isn't. He will end it all."

"How can we be sure that you are?" Ira asked. "What if you are like Ultron?"

"Then you can destroy me," He stated simply.

"What's he waiting for?" Stark asked, referring to Ultron.

"You."

"Where?" Banner asked.

"Sokovia." Clint said. Ira's bright eyes widened at the mention of her home. "He's got Nat there, too."

Banner strode towards Vision. "If we're wrong about you, if you're the monster that Ultron made you to be..."

"What will you do?" Vision asked.

"I think you already gave us the answer to that," Ira told him.

"I don't want to kill Ultron," Vision began as he walked away. "He's unique. And he's in pain. But that pain will roll over the Earth, so he must be destroyed. Every form he's built, every trace of his presence on the net. We have to act now." He turned around to face them. "And not one of us can do it without the others." He lifted his hands, and looked them. "Maybe I am a monster. I don't think I would know if I were one. I'm not what you are, and not what you intended. So there may be no way to make you trust me.  But we need to go."

He picked up Thor's hammer from a table, and gave it to him. Everyone stared. Ira knew that only someone worthy could hold the hammer, so it was surprising that Vision was able to hold it. Thor took the hammer, and Vision walked away.

"Right," Thor said as he patted Stark on the shoulder. "Well done." He walked away, and they all just stared at where he had been.

"Three minutes," Rogers said to them. "Get what you need.
