Chapter Seventeen

Ira gently nudged Pietro's arm. He stirred in his sleep, rolling over and falling still again. She nudged his arm again, this time whispering "Pietro." Still nothing. So she shook him awake.

Pietro frowned as he sat up. "Is there a reason you felt the need to wake me up at," he glanced over at the clock, "Nine fourteen?"

Ira shrugged. "I just thought that it would be a nice relaxing day, with no missions or training."

"A nice relaxing day entails me sleeping in till two," Pietro stated. She rolled her eyes in defeat.

"Okay, go back to sleep or something. It's fine." She left the room, and Pietro curled up under the blankets for a few more minutes, before sighing and getting out of bed. He got dressed, and sped down to the living room, where he found Ira talking to Steve.

"Okay," She was saying, but it sounded disappointed. She noticed him, and walked over to him. "So, it turns out that I have a mission today. I guess the relaxing day will have to wait." She sighed.

Pietro felt sympathetic for her, and he put his arm around her. She cuddled closer to him, before placing a quick kiss on his lips and going to change for the mission. He watched after her, ideas whirring in his mind. He smiled, thinking of the perfect way to cheer her up.

Ira disarmed the last guard and sent him skidding across the floor, crashing in a heap near the wall. "All done here," she said, pressing the comms device in her ear, before leaving to join Clint in the lab.

When she got there, she found him standing at a computer, downloading every file onto a flash drive. Ever since Wanda had been captured and the Avengers had learned that HYDRA had continued their illegal human experimentation, they had been going after every base they could find on the file, in the hopes of finding out how many people had been experimented on, and if there were any that were successful. So far, they only knew of one who could maybe still be alive, but the possibility of other Enhanced HYDRA soldiers looked over them like a dark cloud.

Currently, Clint, Steve, and Ira were taking a small base in Connecticut. Ira and Steve were supposed to take out the guards, and distract the others, giving Clint a chance to download all their files, and it had worked beautifully. Clint removed the flash drive and placed it in his pocket. "Let's go," He said to her, and she nodded. They ran to join Steve in his efforts to hold back the guards.

But when they arrived, they found him standing in an empty courtyard surrounded by either unconscious or dead soldiers. "Are we done?" He asked them, and they nodded. "Great, head to the jet," Steve told them. They ran to the nearby Quinjet, which was cloaked in a copse of trees.

Clint sat in the pilot's seat, while Steve and Ira sat in the back. "Hey," Steve asked her, noticing her glum expression. "Are you okay?"

Ira nodded and smiled, but it didn't reach her eyes. She broke, and shook her head. "It's just, I'm kind of tired of the missions, and the training and the constant danger. I mean, I had to go through so much to get here. My mother dying, the experimentation, Sokovia. Everything has led to this. And so far, it kind of sucks. Everything I've been working for, the gold at the end of the rainbow, is just an overwhelming feeling of 'I wish that I was normal'." Steve looked at her, but said nothing, simply letting her continue.

"I wish that I didn't have these powers. I wish that Sokovia never happened, that my mother didn't die, and that I could grow up as an ordinary kid with an ordinary childhood. But I can't." Ira finished her rant, and looked at Steve for advice.

"The missions are difficult," he agreed. "The training is difficult, our lives are difficult. But that's just how it is, and I know that that doesn't seem great. But I know, that all of us, at one point in time, have wished that we were normal. But we aren't," he stated simply. "And that's a good thing. Because we use the things that make us abnormal to help others. Think of Sokovia," he suggested. "If we hadn't of been there, everyone in the world would have died. That's the good part. And there will always be bad parts. But it will always get better," he assured her.

Ira nodded realizing that he was right. If she didn't have her powers, Pietro would have died. A lot of people would have. So she was glad to be different. During the rest of the flight home, Steve and Ira talked, and Steve helped Ira understand that she did work that made the world a better place.

Ira stepped off the jet feeling a little bit more happy, but still somber about her ruined day of relaxation. By now it was already five, and too late to do anything. So she simply made dinner, read for a little bit, and went to sleep.

The next morning, this time it was Pietro who was awake first. Filled with excitement, he woke Ira up at seven o'clock. "Pietro?" She mumbled. "I thought you wanted to sleep in." He shrugged, and Ira sat up, noticing that he seemed especially excited.

She narrowed her eyes suspiciously. "Why are you so energetic?" She asked him.

"Get dressed, and meet me in the living room," he told her simply, pointed to clothes already laid out on the bed, and left. Ira raised her eyebrows, but she did what she was told. She got dressed, putting on the skinny jeans and the light blue crop top, quickly braided her blonde hair, and walked to the living room.

There she found Pietro waiting, already dressed in a shirt and jeans. "Alright, tell me," she told him. He smiled.

"Well, you were so disappointed in not being able to relax yesterday, so I figured we could do it today," he told her.

"Okay," Ira said. "But you still seem really excited."

"That's because I bought two tickets to the carnival that's in Queens today," Pietro said, and presented two blue tickets from his pocket. Ira gasped.

"Really?" She asked, and he nodded.

"I already okayed it with Steve, and for all of today, there are no missions, no training, and no Avengers. Today we're just regular people." She smiled, and threw her arms around him.

"Thank you," She murmured, and pulled away. "Wait, we don't look like regular people. Won't people know we're Avengers? I mean, your hair draws a lot of attention," Ira told him, gesturing to his silvery blonde locks. "And how are we going to get there?"

Pietro laughed. "Okay, first of all, there's a pair of sunglasses on the counter that you can wear," He told her, and Ira grabbed the pair of aviators from the counter.  "And I've already got some. Second of all, I'll wear a hat," he said, placing a black baseball cap on his head, "And third of all," He paused and smirked. "I hope you don't mind messing up your hair." She narrowed her eyes, before realizing that he was going to speed her all the way to Queens.

"Oh this is a bad idea," she told him. He shrugged, and scooped her up in his arms.

"Possibly."

Pietro sped out of the compound, running quickly along the sidewalks. People were always surprised to see a bright blue blur speeding past them, and Ira giggled at their shocked expressions.

When they reached Queens, Pietro set Ira down in an alley so that no one could see them. They made their way to the carnival, following the sound of fairground music, and the scent of popcorn wafting through the air. As they walked hand-in-hand, laughing and talking, they could see the carnival spread out before them.

A few streets were cordoned off to make room for the rides and booths that comprised the carnival. On one side, in a small park, rides were set up. A Ferris wheel towered over the smaller rides that had been placed there, and was the center of the carnival. On the other side, small booths and carts sold everything from crafts, to jewelry, to food, to clothes.

Ira smiled as she saw it, and she was so glad that Pietro had done this. She looked over at him and they both smiled, before running to the entrance. They waited in line for a few minutes, before Pietro presented their tickets, and they entered the carnival. "What do you want to do first?" Ira asked him. He thought for a moment, before deciding.

"Food, then shops, then rides." She agreed, and they headed over to the stalls selling food. They picked one selling hot dogs, and Ira and Pietro each got one. Ira took a bite of hers, and smiled. It had been a long time since she had had a good hotdog. She turned toward Pietro, and laughed. Not only had he already eaten half his hotdog, but he had mustard on his mouth and nose. She reached out, and gently wiped the mustard off his nose, and he smiled. Ira stood upon her toes and pressed a sweet kiss to his lips, before grabbing him by the hand and dragging him off to the other stalls.

They walked through the rest of the shops while eating, to see if there was anything they liked. They first stopped at a stall selling clothes, and Ira bought a sundress. Next they stopped at another clothes shop, and Pietro bought a t-shirt. While Ira was still looking through the clothes, Pietro wandered over to a jewelry booth. When she realized that he had gone, and found him leaving the store, she walked over to him. "What were you doing?" She asked.

"Oh, nothing," Pietro said. "Now let's go on some rides." They purchased a few tickets for the rides, and picked a ride to go on. By the time they got on the first ride, it was already late in the afternoon. And by the time they had reached the Ferris wheel, it was already dark out.

Ira climbed in the small car, and Pietro climbed in next to her. He wrapped his arm around her, and soon the wheel began to move. They rose slowly in the air, and Ira laid her head on Pietro's shoulder. When they reached the top, he gently moved her head off his shoulder, and they both sat up. "What is it?" She asked.

"Well," Pietro began. "When I was at the jewelry booth, I bought something for you."

"You did?" Ira asked. "You didn't have to do that." By then, they had made one full rotation, and were creeping back towards the top. Pietro pulled out a box from his pocket, and opened it. Inside was a beautiful golden necklace. A small charm with a sun, a moon, and stars on it was placed at the end.

Seeing Ira's slightly puzzled expression, Pietro elaborated. "It's because you're my sun, moon, and all my stars." Ira smiled adoringly, and kissed him. When they broke apart, she whispered.

"I love you."

"I love you, too." Pietro told her, and took the necklace out. Ira lifted her braid, and Pietro clasped the necklace around her neck. She fingered the charm as she leaned against him. She soon grew tired, and when the got off the ride, she yawned. "Alright, I think it's time to go home," Pietro said.

They left the carnival, and he picked her up, and ran her back to the compound. Ira fell asleep in his arms, and when he arrived at the facility, he gently carried her back to her room, and laid her down on the bed. Here laid down next to her, and wrapped his arms around her, and pressed a kiss into her hair.

"I love you," he whispered.
