Chapter Four
Ira, Pietro, and Wanda were led by Clint to a room stocked with equipment. "Gear's in the cabinets," he told them.
Ira nodded. "Thank you," She told him as he walked away. He nodded.
Ira walked over to a cabinet, and opened it. It was full of clothes. She searched through it, and found a dark blue shawl. She slipped it over her shoulders, and settled it in place. She turned towards Pietro and Wanda, and watched as Pietro threw a red jacket to Wanda. She caught it and put it on.
"Are we ready?" Ira asked them. They both nodded.
"Let's go," Wanda said, and they walked out of the room towards the hangar. When they got there, most of the team was already in the Quinjet. Ira looked around. It was a wide space, with electronic panels on the ceiling of the cockpit, and metal plating inlaid on the walls. Steve handed them communication devices, and Ira took hers. She studied it, before slipping it into her ear.
"Ultron knows we're coming," Steve told them on the jet as they took off. "Odds are we'll be riding into heavy fire, and that's what we signed up for. But the people of Sokovia, they didn't." He looked at Pietro. "So our priority is getting them out. All they want is to live their lives in peace, and that's not going to happen today. But we can do our best to protect them. And we can get the job done, and find out what Ultron's been building. We find Romanoff, and we clear the field. Keep the fight between us. Ultron thinks we're monsters, and we're what's wrong with the world. This isn't just about beating him, it's about whether he's right."
Ira sat on the jet next to Pietro and Wanda. She looked at them, her friends whom she had known for so long. This might be the last time they were together. She loved them both, and she didn't want anything to happen to them. "Wanda? Pietro?" She began.
"Yes?" Pietro asked. They both looked at her.
I just wanted you to know that you both are my closest friends. I know some of us may not make it out of this, and I want you to know that I have cherished our time together, and that I wouldn't change a thing." Ira told them. She meant every word of it.
Wanda and Pietro smiled. "Ira, we will always be close friends." Wanda said kindly, she put a hand on Ira's arm. "Not even death can change that.." Ira smiled, knowing that she meant it.
She looked at Pietro. He looked troubled. His normally bright blue eyes were shadowed with worry. "Ira, there's something I have to tell you-" He began, but was interrupted by Steve.
"We're landing!" He called.
"Yes?" Ira asked Pietro.
"It's nothing," He said, and looked away.
Steve walked to the back of the Quinjet. Ira looked up as he came over and crouched down beside them. "Your job is to get the citizens out," He said to them. "Pietro, tell the officials to clear the city. Wanda, use your powers to evacuate the citizens. And Ira," He looked at her, "Stay with Wanda. Protect the people. Make sure that nothing happens to them." She nodded.
Steve stood up. "Alright people. This is it. Let's move."
The door opened, and Ira got a glimpse of her home. It was like she was seeing it in a whole new way. The buildings and streets were the same, but now she was looking at it from the view of an Avenger. And she saw thousands of people she had to protect.
Pietro ran off to the police station, while Wanda and Ira made their way to a city square. Wanda took a deep breath, and then spread her powers through the streets, red mist creeping into the houses and convincing the people to evacuate. Ira made sure that everyone left safely, and she scanned the streets warily, waiting for an ambush. And then it came.
Robots started appearing from every crevice and corner, every street and block. They crawled up the cliff walls, and flew down from the sky. The people ran in terror. "Get off the bridge!" Wanda yelled to them. "Run!"
The robots landed near them, and Ira used her powers to throw one into another. She ripped them apart and threw them to the ground. She saw a robot land near a little girl, who screamed and tried to run. It raised its arm to blast her, and Ira sent a powerful blast of energy at it. It exploded, and the girl ran away. She looked around, and there were no more robots in that area.
"Pietro!" Ira called as she saw him. He came over to her and scooped her up. "That area's clear," She told him. He nodded, and sped her to a street corner crawling with robots. She began destroying them while Pietro sped through them, tearing them apart.
"Do you see? The beauty of it, the inevitability," Ultron declared from above them. His voice was projected through the robots. "You rise, only to fall. You Avengers, you are my meteor, my swift and terrible sword, and the Earth will crack with the weight of your failure. Purge me from your computers, turn my own flesh against me. It means nothing. When the dust settles, the only thing living in this world will be metal."
The earth shuddered and cracked beneath Ira's feet. "This isn't good," she murmured to Pietro. One large section of Sokovia broke away, and began to slowly rise off the ground. Buildings fell, and streets split in two. She backed away from the edge, and looked to Pietro.
"Let's go," He told her. She nodded, and he picked her up and sped her away. Ira blasted the robots and tore them apart. Pietro stopped running to catch his breath. "Incoming already came in." Steve said on the comms. "Stark, you worry about bringing the city back down safely. The rest of us have one job: tear these things apart. You get hurt, hurt 'em back. You get killed, walk it off."
Pietro sighed, and picked Ira back up. He ran her over to Wanda, and grabbed her too. "Keep up, old man!" He shouted to Clint, and Ira chuckled. He sped them to a square, and set them down. They began destroying the bots, Ira and Wanda using their powers, and Pietro running through them. Ira noticed Pietro stop running, and gesture at one of the police, who had accidentally shot him.
The air was thinning, and the city was rising through the clouds. "Glad you like the view, Romanoff. It's about to get better." Nick Fury's voice sounded through the comms. Ira made her way to the bridge in time to see a Helicarrier rise above the clouds. It had four massive propellers that held it up, and Ira noticed smaller carriers on it, presumably to carry civilians.
"This is S.H.I.E.L.D?" Pietro asked Steve and Natasha.
"This is what S.H.I.E.L.D is supposed to be," Steve responded.
"This is not so bad." Pietro admitted.
"Maybe we were wrong," Ira acknowledged.
"Maybe we were," Pietro replied to her, and smiled.
A carrier lowered toward them, and stopped at the edge of the bridge. "Let's load 'em up," Steve ordered. Ira began helping the people onto the carrier, guiding them towards it.
"Avengers, time to work for a living," Stark told them through comms. Pietro sped Ira and Wanda to the Church, and the rest of the Avengers soon joined them. They destroyed the small amount of robots there easily.
"What's the drill?" Natasha asked.
"This is the drill," Tony said, and pointed to the Core. "If Ultron gets a hand on the Core, we lose." As he said this, Ultron slowly descended from the sky, hovering above the ground in front of the Church.
"Is that the best you can do?" Thor yelled at him.
Ultron raised a hand, and all of the remaining robots crawled, ran, or flew behind Ultron. He raised his arms, showing them the might of his army. Ira searched through the crowd, but didn't find any sight of Emilia.
"You had to ask," Steve said to Thor.
"This is the best I can do," Ultron told them. This is exactly what I wanted. All of you, against all of me. How can you possibly hope to stop me?"
"Like the old man said," Tony said, looking at Steve, "Together."
Hulk roared, and the robots came charging forward. Ira immediately sprang into action, destroying the robots with her powers. She sent bolts of energy smashing into them, and caused them to collide with others. She brought five of them together and slammed them into the ground, effectively destroying them.
The rest of the Avengers were decimating the robots. Thor smashed them with his hammer, Clint shot them with his bow, Natasha used her gun, Steve threw his shield, Pietro ran through them, Wanda used her powers, Tony blasted them, and Vision and Hulk smashed them. Ira threw a bot right into the path of Thor's hammer, and he obliterated it.
Ultron and Vision battled in the roof of the Church, and Vision blasted him outside. Thor and Tony went outside, and all three of them sent beams of energy at Ultron. He tried to withstand it but couldn't. When they were done, he collapsed. "You know, with the benefit of hindsight-" He began, standing up, but didn't finish because Hulk punched him into the sky.
The robots flew off the city in fear. "They'll try to leave the city," Thor said.
"We can't let them. Not even one. Rhodey," Stark called.
"I'm on it," Rhodey called through the comms.
"We gotta move out," Steve told them. "Even I can tell the air is getting thin. You guys get to the boats, I'll sweep for stragglers, be right behind you."
"What about the Core?" Clint asked.
"I'll protect it," Wanda volunteered. "It's my job."
"Are you sure?" Ira asked her. She nodded.
"Get the people on the boats," Wanda told them.
"I'm not going to leave you here." Pietro stated.
"I can handle this." Wanda said, and blasted an incoming robot.
Pietro shrugged, and started to walk away. "You know, I'm twelve minutes older than you," He stated.
Wanda laughed. "Go."
As Ira watched, a figure walked towards them once the others had left. She tilted her head as it came closer. She saw dark blonde hair, and narrowed hazel eyes. "Emilia," She murmured. Emilia strode towards her until she was about ten feet away.
"Ira," She smirked. "I believe we have unfinished business."
Wanda's hands started to glow, but Ira noticed robots running towards the Church. "Wanda, you have to protect the Core. I'll finish this." She turned towards Emilia, her hands glowing a dark blue. Emilia narrowed her eyes, and Ira felt a pain creep into her skull.
She fought it off with her powers, and rushed at Emilia, sending a blast of energy at her. Emilia swung her fist at Ira, but she stopped it with her powers and pushed her back. "Stop this!" Ira yelled. "It doesn't have to be this way."
"Oh, but I believe it does," Emilia stated, and charged towards Ira. This time, as they were fighting, a stabbing pain rushed into Ira's head, and she fell to her knees. Emilia smirked and increased the pain. But Ira fought through it. She rose to her feet, and punched towards Emilia, but she caught her fist. Ira couldn't use her powers, but she kicked out her leg and hit Emilia in the stomach. She fell backwards, and Ira blasted her with her powers.
Emilia glared at her, but ran off. "I'm going to go," Ira told Wanda. She nodded. Ira ran towards the carriers watching for anymore robots. She destroyed a few, and when she reached the carriers she stood by Pietro.
"Where were you?" He asked. She shrugged.
"I had some unfinished business to take care of."
They helped the civilians get on board, and Ira noticed Clint run to grab a child that had fallen behind. She was horrified to see Ultron fly behind Clint in a jet and start shooting. Pietro saw it too, and he ran to protect Clint.
"Pietro!" Ira yelled, and ran after him. When she got there, he ran in front of the bullets, saving Clint and the child.
"You didn't see that coming," He told Clint, and dropped to the floor, the life fading from his pale blue eyes.
"No!" Ira screamed. She dropped beside him. She put her hands on his chest, over the bullet-riddled flesh, and concentrated, drawing every last bit of energy she had into a healing flow that spread into his body. There was a loud scream, and red mist exploded through the city, but she ignored it.
"Ira..." Clint said gently, and put a hand on her arm.
"No," Ira pushed him away. "He can't be dead." She continued healing him, watching as the bullets fell out as the flesh closed in. When she had used up all of her energy, she waited. All was quiet for a few chilling seconds, then Pietro gasped and opened his eyes.
"Pietro," Ira murmured, and smiled weakly. She tried to move towards him, but found that she couldn't. She collapsed toward the floor, and the last thing she saw was the worried faces of Clint and Pietro, as the world turned black.

Ira woke up in a hospital room. The walls were covered in a light gray wallpaper, and there was a scent of disinfectant in the air. She looked over. On the chairs by the bed sat Pietro and Wanda.
"Guys?" She croaked. "Where am I?" Her voice was rough from disuse. At this sound they looked up.
"Ira!" Wanda called running to her bed. She threw her arms around her. "I'm so glad you're okay. You're in a hospital room at the new Avengers Facility." She told her. "Thank you for saving him," she murmured so that Pietro couldn't hear. Ira smiled, and Wanda moved away.
Pietro came forward and wrapped his arms around her. "Thank you," he said. She nodded as he pulled away. "Wanda, could you go get Steve? He'll want to know that Ira's up." She nodded, and left.
Pietro sat on the edge of the bed facing Ira. "Ira," he began, "You know how before the mission I said I had to tell you something?" She nodded. "Well, it's that," he took a deep breath, "I think I might like you."
Ira's eyes widened. "You do?" She asked. He nodded.
"I know you may not feel the same way, but with you saving me, I had to tell you."
"Pietro, I do feel the same way." She said. "When I saved you, I knew there was a possibility that it wouldn't work. But I couldn't imagine that. I knew that I had to bring you back, because I couldn't imagine living in a world where you're not in it."
He smiled as she said it, and pulled her into a hug. "I'm glad," he murmured. He heard the door opening, and sat back down in the chair.
"Hi Ira." Steve said as he walked into the room with Wanda. "How are you feeling?"
"Better." She smiled. "How long was I asleep?"
"Just under a day."
"Where's everyone else?" She asked.
"In the training room." Steve replied. "I'll ask the doctor to clear you, and then you can come join us." He left for a few minutes, then came back. "The doctor said it's okay for you to leave."
Pietro helped Ira out of the bed, and they walked toward the door. "Wanda can show you to your room." Steve told her. "You can change there." Wanda guided her to her room.
"Pietro and I are right across the hall from you." Wanda said. "And here's your room." She opened the door.
The room was spacious, with a bed in the center against the wall, a TV across from the bed, and a dresser on the right wall. Ira turned to see a bookshelf by the door, and a nightstand next to the bed. There was a door leading to a closet, and another leading to a bathroom. The walls were painted a light cream, with a gray carpet.
"Wow," Ira breathed. "This room is so big."
Wanda nodded. "All of the rooms are like this."
Ira opened the closet to find a few clothes already hanging up. She looked questionably at Wanda. "We bought clothes while you were sleeping. Also all of the necessities that you'll need, so you should be good. I'm gonna go change," She said, and left. Ira rummaged through the closet, and changed into a white shirt and leggings. She walked outside, and soon after Wanda appeared from her room. She wore a long, red, corseted jacket with knee-high boots and leggings. Her hair was curled, framing her face.
"The training room's this way," Wanda said, leading Ira to the training room. It was a wide open space with cement walls, and a wall completely made of glass, showing a view to a forest. Cement beams criss-crossed the walls, and the floor was made of a polished tile criss-crossed with white tile. There was a Quinjet in the room, along with several crates on the floor. On the back wall, a large, silver Avengers 'A' glistened in the light. Vision, Sam, Pietro and Rhodey were already there. Vision and Rhodey were on the ground, while Sam swooped through the air with his wings. Pietro sped around the room, a blue trail following him.
"Ira, watch this," Wanda said excitedly. She used her powers and blasted energy from her hands. It pushed her up, and she flew off the floor. Ira smiled as she floated down.
"How did you do that?" She asked. Wanda showed her, and soon Ira blasted off the floor, staying in the air for a few seconds. She landed, and Pietro sped over to them. Just then, the door opened, and Steve and Natasha entered. Wanda came down, as did the others who were flying.
"Avengers," Steve began as he looked at all of them. "A-"
