Chapter Eight
"You're safe," Steve said, stepping forward. "We're the Avengers." The boy showed a slight look of recognition, but it was masked by overwhelming confusion. "We protect people who can't protect themselves."
"You're at the Avengers Facility in Upstate New York." Natasha supplied, stepping forward. "We rescued you from a warehouse in Sokovia."
"The last thing I remember is being taken from my house," the little boy mused, his brown eyes clouded with confusion. "But it wasn't by any of you."
"Did the person who took you have blonde hair and hazel eyes?" Wanda asked, and the boy nodded.
"That's Emilia." Ira told them. "She's locked up in another room. She was the one who took you."
"How did you wake up?" Natasha asked. "You were on a sedative."
The boy shrugged. "I just woke up." Ira walked over to his table, and studied it. The tube distributing sedative seemed to be intact, but the actual bottle was broken. She pulled it out from under the table.
"That explains some things." Clint muttered.
"I'm the only one awake." The boy told them.
"What's your name?" Ira asked.
"My name is Jayden Satton." The boy said. The last name rung a bell in Ira's mind, and she tried to remember where she had heard it before.
"What powers do you have?" Wanda asked him.
"Telepathy."
"That explains the voices," Ira mused. "So it was you?"
Jayden nodded. "I reached out to anyone I could find after I woke up, and I found you." He looked around. "Where's my sister?"
"You have a sister?" Clint asked.
Jayden nodded. "She was taken with me."
"What does your sister look like?" Wanda asked.
"She has long brown hair braided in the back. The last thing I can remember her wearing was a white dress with flowers on it." The name clicked in Ira's head. Satton. It was the last name of Elizabeth, the little girl with pyrokinesis that they had found in the warehouse.
Ira walked through the room until she found Elizabeth. "Is this your sister?" She asked him, and he came over.
"Yes!" He exclaimed. He turned towards the others. "Can you wake her up?" He asked hopefully.
Tony nodded. He walked over towards the table, and unhooked the tube that distributed the sedative. They waited a few seconds, and Elizabeth began to move. First it was only a slight twitching of her arms and legs, and then she groggily sat up. She first noticed Jayden, then the Avengers, and then the group of unconscious Enhanced laying on the tables behind her.
"Jayden?" She asked her brother. "What's going on? Where are we?"
"We're safe." Jayden reassured her, putting a comforting hand on her shoulder. "We're with the Avengers. They rescued us."
Elizabeth's eyes widened. "The Avengers? Like from the TV?" She looked at them all amazed. Ira smiled at the awestruck little girl. Jayden held out his arm, and helped Elizabeth off of the table. She was a little unsteady at first—her muscles were still numb from disuse, but soon she was able to walk again. She ran over to Ira and threw her arms around her.
Ira was taken aback at first, but she smiled, and hugged the little girl. Elizabeth stepped back. "Do either of you remember anything that happened?" Steve asked the children.
"I remember the woman taking us," Elizabeth told them, scrunching her forehead in concentration. "But it all goes blank after that."
Jayden, too, looked confused, but his eyes widened. "I remember we were at our house. It was the middle of the night, and I heard a crash in the living room. I got out of bed, and went to go look, and the woman, Emilia, was there. She saw me, and pressed some sort of rag over my mouth. It must have been drugged or something. As I was passing out, Elizabeth came in and saw Emilia. Emilia then ran towards her, and I passed out."
"Oh, that's right." Elizabeth remembered. "I saw her hurting Jayden, so I," She paused, thinking. "I lit my hands on fire, and suddenly I felt an intense pain in my head, and then I passed out."
Pietro nodded. "That makes sense. Emilia has the powers to inflict pain with her mind," he said, turning towards Jayden and Elizabeth, and they both nodded.
"What happened after that?" Jayden asked.
"Well, from what we gathered from the mission, Emilia took you, and all of the other Enhanced, to a warehouse in Sokovia. She sedated all of you, and somehow took your powers." Natasha told them.
"What?" Elizabeth asked. "She stole our powers?"
Steve nodded. "She drained you powers, and stored them in containers. When we broke into the warehouse, we found the containers, and re-injected the powers. But, Elizabeth," Steve hesitated. "Emilia injected herself with a vial of your powers."
Elizabeth frowned. "She took some of my powers?" She asked, and Steve nodded.
"You still have some of your powers though, right?" Tony asked her. Elizabeth nodded, forming a small fireball on her hand to prove it. The red-hot flames licked at her fingers, but she was unscathed. Elizabeth frowned, and tried to increase the force of the flames, but she couldn't.
"It's not as powerful as it was before," she said, disappointed. Jayden comforted his sister, as Ira pulled the others aside.
"We've got to get her powers back," Wanda said. "She looked so disappointed."
"But how?" Clint asked. "Drain them from Emilia?"
Ira shook her head. "We can't do that. That would be crossing a line. If we do that, how can we call ourselves any better than Emilia?"
Natasha nodded. "She's right. First, we'll be taking Emilia's powers, next, we'll be stealing powers from out enemies, or injecting ourselves with them. We can't do this."
Steve agreed. "I think we'll just have to comfort Elizabeth, and she'll have to get used to not being as powerful as she was. Besides, who knows? She might get more powerful as she gets older."
They walked back to Jayden and Elizabeth. Ira gave them a tight smile. "I don't think that we can get your powers back. I'm sorry."
Elizabeth nodded. "It's okay," She said sadly. "But you still saved us," she brightened.
"And that's worth more than any powers," Jayden said, putting his arm around Elizabeth.
"Well," Tony said, looking around. "Let's wake up the others, shall we?"
They nodded, and the team walked around disconnecting the tubes to the sedative. Soon, the rest of the Enhanced drearily sat up. They were all very confused, but the team explained what had happened.
"Alright," Steve said when they had organized the rest of the Enhanced into an orderly group. "We know where all of your houses are, and we're going to bring you back. We only have two Quinjets, so we're going to take all of you eighteen and under first, and then the others. So, those eighteen and under go with Natasha and Ira, and they'll take you to the Quinjet."
He walked back to the others, and Natasha and Ira directed the others to the Quinjet. Natasha helped the older teenagers get to the Quinjets. She led them to one Quinjet, and sat them down. Ira felt with the younger children, leading them to the second Quinjet, where Clint was waiting. They had chosen Clint because he had children, so he knew how to handle them. They had Natasha and Steve go with the older Enhanced to keep them from causing any trouble.
Wanda, Pietro, and Ira went with the younger children. They sat at the front of the children, listening to the kids talking excitedly with each other about how they were glad to go home, and the stories they could tell their parents.
"Okay, this is the last time I'm going to say this," Ira said, leaning her head on Pietro's shoulders. "But I'm glad this is finally over." She looked up at Pietro and smiled. "Actually this time."
He laughed. "Actually this time."
"It seems like so long ago that Sokovia happened." Wanda chimed in. "I know it was only a few months ago, but it feels like a few years."
Ira laughed. "I know what you mean."
"Hey, we're coming up on the first city. There are a few houses in here." Clint called from the cockpit.
They landed in a field, and Ira, Pietro, and Wanda walked to a house set in the middle of the field. It was a large white farmhouse, with paint peeling slightly around the edges, and a sagging from porch. It was Jayden and Elizabeth's home, and as soon as they saw it, they took off running towards it. Ira and Wanda took their time, while Pietro sped off with the children.
They reached the farmhouse as Elizabeth and Jayden reached the door. They pounded on the door. "Mom! Dad! We're home!" Elizabeth shouted. The door opened, and a man and a woman stepped out. They looked exactly like their children. Jayden and Elizabeth's mother had long brown hair and piercing brown eyes, while their father had short black hair and brown eyes.
"Oh my gosh!" The woman yelled. She rushed forward and wrapped her arms around her children, and the man followed. They sobbed together, a family reunited. "Thank you," the woman said to the Enhanced with tears in her eyes.
"How can we ever repay you?" Their father asked.
"It's okay," Ira told them. "Just spend time with your children."
Jayden and Elizabeth ran over and hugged the Enhanced. "Thank you," They whispered.

The rest of the reunions went similarly. As free they had finished returning the children, they returned all of the adults to their homes. Currently, they were all relaxing in the living room, some reading, some watching TV. "Guys," Clint called, running in. "You have to see this." He grabbed the remote and changed the channel to the news. An anchorwoman was speaking.
"Many thanks go out to the Avengers, who returned almost five hundred missing adults and children to their homes. They were reported missing a few days ago, and have quite a story to tell." The footage cut to a video of one of the Enhanced, talking about how the Avengers had rescued him.
Ira smiled as she watched the footage. Sometimes this happened after an especially important mission. But this one felt personal. Special. Ira knew how many of those families had felt, not being able to know of their loved ones were alright.
Ira leaned her head against Pietro's chest. "We did it," he whispered.
"Yeah," she smiled. "We did."
