To cure or not to cure? Part 8
We talked for a while about all that I had missed, all that had happened since the Zee epidemic had ravaged the world, about our loved ones, me about my mother, and she about her dead husband, tears fell. Finally Rachel told me some more about this setup they had here and about her team, all whilst I lay strapped to a morgue table, and she, lent against a wall with her hands folded behind her back. Rachel stood up straight, walked to the head of the table and bent down to meet me at eye level.
"Gregory, tomorrow we are taking you to Central hospital" I could see she was uncomfortable with what she was about to say "There you will be.... questioned, and tests run on you"
I was concerned by this new piece of information, but hopeful! "They will be able to help me, cure me, yes"? I asked pensively.
She shook her head "No, no they won't. You see Gregory, you are the only case we have, that anybody has, and the amount of resources it would take to help you, well, it just isn't feasible. We have been looking for a cure since the beginning, and there isn't one, not yet. Even if there were a cure, we more than likely wouldn't use it, not on the greater population" She rubbed her forehead.
She continued "There has been too much damage done to our society. We don't have enough resources, not enough food or water for those who have survived, how are we supposed to feed tens of thousands of patients, no, we will not cure anybody! What we are trying to do is prevent further contamination, not seek a cure, sad as it may seem. Gregory, preventative medication is our goal now, and once you are with Dr Avorries, hopefully he will be able to discover the biological mechanism that allowed your brain to compartmentalize your personality to help you to survive the Zee infection"
I recognized the name, I'm not sure why but I felt a sense of foreboding by this coincidence "Avorries, is that Dr Jonathan Avorries" I asked.
"Yes! Do you know him"? She asked surprised.
"Of him, yes! Back before my accident I was a student at PLEX University, I was studying to be a doctor of all things. In my spare time I worked delivering animals, mainly foxes, to Dr Avories department in the science research building" I said, I didn't say any more to her about it, but I found this just a little to coincidental for my liking.
As I spoke Rachel withdrew a small cylinder from a pocket, and as she unscrewed its lid she said "You will see him very soon. First I just need to sedate you for transportation, we can't risk your Zee getting loose, can we. Just relax" and with a swift flick of her wrist she jabbed me in the arm. Whatever was in that syringe, it was acting fast. I was already feeling lightheaded.
The lights of my mind were slowly going out. I knew that I must ask her one last question, I'm not sure why, but its seems an important detail that I must know "Rachel" my voice is slurring "Tell me, where did the epicentre of the Zee virus originate, what part of the country, what part of the world?" I can feel myself drifting off now.
"The epicentre?" she asked confused by my unexpected question, but she answered quickly "It started in the small village of Grayday, 20 miles south of here. Why?" I heard her ask. The darkness was taking me fast now, my last thought "Grayday, that's where Mcgreebs farm is!"
