     It's raining.

Felix can see it hammering at the window, frosting the glass with condensation. He'd just got home, his father picking him up from daycare after school. His father had been at work, and his mother at home all day. She might have picked him up, but she'd been ill for a while.

Dizzy spells, she said. A little vertigo here and there, migraines sometimes. She always told Felix she was fine and not to worry. But sometimes she didn't get out of bed. Sometimes she was in and out of the bathroom, couldn't eat anything. So he still worried.

His father heads to the kitchen to make dinner. Spaghetti, Felix's favourite. He puts his backpack down and hangs his coat by the door like he was taught. He wants to read a comic, like he usually does in the evenings, but he has some homework to get through first.

He grabs his homework packet and takes it to the dining room table. Smells the fragrant aroma of garlic and onions simmering in a pan and he takes a seat. Neither his father nor his mother usually help him with his homework. His father is too busy cooking dinner, cleaning the house or packing his lunch for tommorow and his mother is normally too ill.

He scribbles through his maths and his english and finally heads to put everything away. His father asks him to go upstairs and get his mother, see if she wanted any dinner. He skips through the kitchen, past the living room and stops dead at the bottom of the stairs.

Because he doesn't have to go much further to find her. There she is, laying at the bottom of the stairs. Her t-shirt has ridden up, showing a pale strip of skin on her lower back, which is peppered with bruises. There is a smear of blood at the corner of her mouth and her eyes are wide open.

He doesn't register much else before he is screaming for his father. Felix is pushed behind his father, who is phoning the authorities.

He doesn't remember much else from that night, having blocked the trauma clean out of his mind. A few things have stuck out to him over the years as he grew. The lack of muddy footprints inside. The injuries on his mother that were too great to have been from a fall.

But it was ruled an accident, and Felix had never questioned it.

Not until now.

HYDE PARK GAZETTE
July 20th, 2007.

The Hyde Park community was shellshocked when three months ago, police investigated a potential homicide. The Lee family from 12 Clover Lane had an ambulance called to their residence at 5:30pm on the evening of Sunday April 21st. Information had been scarce until police investigators told reporters that the situation was being treated as a homicide. After three months of investigation police have now told reporters that they are ruling the situation an accident.

"There is a severe lack of evidence to suggest that it was anything other than a tragic accident" lead detective, Bryan Sager, makes light of the situation. "You know, she'd been ill for quite some time. Her family told detectives that she had vertigo issues and migraines. It's not unfathomable to discern that she was too close to the stairs when she had a vertigo attack and took a tumble."

Police chief Daniel Jackson also had some words to say about this situation. "Of course this is still an undeniable tragedy. Accident or not, a young boy has lost his mother and a husband his wife. Our hearts really do go out to the family, and we want them to know that we're with them."
