Don't Be The Hero

Phantom wasn't quite sure where to start so he decided to start with the one they all knew about, the Rake. Phantom opened the boxes with his name on them, "The Rake isn't human, he never has been as far as I know. He's been around for centuries, people have been writing about encounters they've had with him since before America was even thought of."

"Sometimes he tells people to go places and they usually turn back, those that don't are never seen again. Sometimes he tells them to leave and they never have to be told twice, they never go back to those locations. When he does kill someone he stalks them, he watches them sleep at night and one day you'll wake up during the night and he's there."

"He might not kill you right then but if there's someone else in the house he'll probably go after them, chances are they won't survive. He's killed both children and adults, sometimes it's quick but sometimes he'll tear them apart, and they're awake for it. His area spans over four different continents, whether he can teleport or stows away on something I haven't figured out."

"Either way he's dangerous, I know what he can do from experience, if you ever see him then you better run like hell."

Phantom was quiet and Batman spoke, "We need to tell the League about this."

Phantom looked at him, "Why, so they can say I'm crazy too?"

"So they can help."

Phantom shook his head, "You don't know them like I do, having them go after these guys would be suicide."

Batman gave Phantom a serious look, "Then tell them what you know, at least then they'll know more about them if they ever see one of them."

Phantom thought for a minute, no one believed him and he didn't think the League would either but he had to try right? They've killed hundreds, thousands even, and despite his best efforts he hadn't even been able to slow them down much. Having the League at least help him investigate would allow him to do a lot more then he was right now.

Phantom sighed, "Fine, but if the League gets involved with them in any way after this then at least tell me. You don't know these guys, you don't know what they can do or how to survive if you run into them, you need someone that knows these guys."

Batman nodded, "You've already proved you know more then any of us about them, when it comes to them you can call the shots."

Phantom looked at everything, "This is going to be one hell of a briefing."

Batman left the room to tell the League he was calling a meeting before trying to decide what to do with all of this. He eventually decided that they should bring all of it if, for not other reason, to show the League that Phantom wasn't kidding. The team took everything down to the last scrap of paper and brought it to the watchtower using the zeta tubes.

While the Leaguers were making their way to the watchtower for the meeting Phantom paced as he tried to think. Where was he even supposed to start, the Leaguers that walked in were both confused and surprised when they saw it. It took about fifteen minutes and when they were all there Batman looked at Phantom, "I think we should start."

Phantom looked at him, "It's your call."

Batman nodded and looked at the Leaguers, "A situation has recently been brought to my attention, one I made the mistake of ignoring. Phantom has been investigating it for some time and has agreed to tell the League what he knows but this is his case."

Phantom took a breath as Batman sat down and tried once again to figure out where he should start, he decided to just dive in. "So like Batman said I have been investigating this for a while, about three years now, and until now no one believed me. It's strange, unlikely, I'll even admit that it does sound crazy but I can say without a doubt that it's true."

"Now where I should start is a bit difficult to decide, there's a lot to, well, all of this, so I'm just starting from what seems to be a good point." Phantom used his laptop to bring up pictures of each of the killers, minus Smile Dog, "I've been investigating seven killers, technically more but I'll get to that. They're called Slenderman, Jeff the Killer, the Rake, Smile Dog, Eyeless Jack, Laughing Jack, and Ben Drowned."

"Some of them aren't human, some of them used to be, and some of them technically still are. Each of them has killed hundreds, all together they've killed thousands and they're not showing any signs of stopping. These aren't the only killers like this out there, they have their own brand of crazy and they're not exactly nice to their victims."

"They can all be divided into factions, for lack of a better term, and two out of the known three have some sort of leader. This group is led by Slenderman, as far as I know he's never been human but I do know that he's been killing for a very long time. But as I said there are other killers and they don't all follow Slender, the second leader is called Zalgo."

"I've seen him and even though he's hella creepy his group doesn't have as high of a body count. Zalgo has a larger group following him though, some of them do follow him but don't stay close like Slender's group. The third group are what you might call the 'guns for hire', they work and kill alone but have been known to help both groups."

"This group includes killers like Clockwork, Ticci Toby, the Puppeteer, and so on, if they are a distinct group they're on good terms with Zalgo and Slender. Slender's group usually keeps to themselves, there aren't very many of them but they're still dangerous. Since Slender is the leader I'll tell you about him first, Slender is a six foot seven humanoid that wears a suit and tie."

"He's been around for centuries and there's a fair amount of photographic evidence of him as well as multiple eye witness accounts. He usually inhabits one forest in particular and only leaves when he has to, it's also where his home is."

Wonder Woman spoke, "Wait, he has a home?"

"Of course he has a home, you just probably won't come back alive if you find it."

Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) spoke, "Then how do you know about it?"

Phantom shrugged, "Because I managed to get out." The heroes looked absolutely stunned and Phantom continued, "Most of Slender's victims are from this forest. No one has ever found the bodies of said victims and most of them are presumed missing but you should assume they're dead."

Phantom took out eight pages that looked a bit old, "These eight pages can be seen somewhere in the forest. They're scattered around but they're always on some sort of landmark like an abandoned building or a broken down car. He will kill anyone that tries to collect these pages, I nearly died getting them and I'm sure he's still holding a grudge."

Phantom brought up pictures of each of the pages, they all said something different and many of them had what looked like a child's drawings on them. "Not only are there pictures of him but he's been depicted in cave paintings and likely in Egyptian text as well. In which case he's been around for thousands of years and killing people, whether he's immortal or not I don't know."

"He also has powers, he can make black tendrils protrude from his back and he usually uses them to attack people, but there is one detail you really won't like."

Hawk Girl spoke, "You mean there's something worse then what you've already told us?"

Phantom suddenly looked tired, he looked like a person that has seen more horrors then anyone would ever understand. Someone that knew more then he ever wanted to, that one look made all the heroes wonder what he'd gone through that they didn't know about. Phantom looked at all of them, "Slender man kills kids, he's actually killed more kids then adults."

"I'll never forget when I found out why, I'm not going to repeat it but I will tell you that it's messed up." The heroes stayed silent and Phantom cleared his throat, "Let's move on to Smile Dog, as you might have noticed I didn't show you a picture of him. There's a reason for that, Smile Dog targets people that have seen a particular image of him on a floppy disk."

"This image has been passed from person to person, the only way to save yourself is to pass it on to someone else. If you don't you will end up dead and the disk will find it's way into some else's hands anyway. I absolutely refuse to tell you where this image has been mentioned or previously found, it's disturbing."

The look on Phantom's face told them they didn't want to know so they didn't say anything. "What I will tell you is that any attempt at creating a website on or around Smile Dog has been quickly deleted. Even I can't keep track of how many times Smile Dog has been mentioned but by keeping track of the victims I can figure out where the disk has been."

Phantom took out a floppy disk from a box, "I did track down this one, it does have the picture and I did look at it. Because of what I am I wasn't as affected by the image but it took a while to recover, a normal person never would. Seeing the image causes great psychological damage from nightmares to hallucinations and other problems."

"Everyone that sees the image and doesn't pass it on winds up dead, if any of you come across it then don't look at it. As soon as you see anything labeled smile.jpg or smile.dog close it and give it to me, I'm not joking. As for the disk I found it soon became apparent that it wasn't the only one, meaning it's still killing people."

"I've seen Smile Dog in person and have concluded that only the image affects people psychologically. Why that's the case I'm not sure, when it comes to these guys there's a lot no one knows so don't expect answers for everything. What I do know is that Smile Dog is tricky, dangerous, and overall beyond creepy no matter how you look at it."

"Next is Jeff the Killer, he's an interesting case and believe it or not he's actually human and still is to this day."

Everyone looked shocked and Aquaman spoke, "He's human?"

"Yes, when he was a teenager he got caught up in an incident that changed his appearance to what it is now. He used to have brown hair and blue eyes, obviously that isn't the case anymore since his hair is black and his eyes would make you think he should be blind. During the incident he got doused in bleach and set on fire, when he woke up in the hospital he looked like this."

"I wish I could say that's the end of the story but that's far from the truth as I hope you've figured out. Later that day Jeff went home and after the rest of his family went to sleep that night he burned off his eyelids and carved a permanent smile into his face."

The heroes looked absolutely horrified and Flash spoke, "Why would someone do that?"

Phantom paused for a split second before he cleared his throat, "I don't think you want to know. Anyway based on the case file I'd say his mother found him in the bathroom after he did all of this and she ran to her bedroom. Her husband was probably already there and she woke him up when Jeff came in and killed her."

"His father reached for his gun but couldn't get to it in time and was also killed, Jeff then went into his little brother's room and killed him. The next day their bodies were discovered and Jeffrey Woods was missing along with the murder weapon, a kitchen knife. Murders then started popping up where the weapon was presumed to be a kitchen knife and there were no witnesses."

"The only survivors were young children, if they could speak the descriptions they gave were usually different. The only consistency in each report was the abnormally wide and terrifying smile of the killer. Jeff has a very high body count, he's strong, he's fast, and he's smart which makes him arguably the most dangerous killer out of Slenderman's group."

"I've looked at the police reports, looked inside the house, and talked to anyone that knew Jeff. They all said he'd never hurt anyone which obviously wasn't accurate but he at least used to be a good kid. I wish I could say I feel bad for him, maybe I did at one time but after what he did I find it very hard to feel sympathy toward him."

Flash spoke, "What did he do?"

Phantom went quiet for a few seconds, "Let's just say the scars aren't going away any time soon."

The heroes glanced at each other and Phantom shook his head a little, "Let's move on to the Rake. For those of you that don't know he's not human, much like Slenderman I don't think he's ever been human and he's been around for a long time. He moves around more then the others, he's been seen on four different continents and that's just as far as I know."

"He doesn't always kill people, sometimes he tries to get them to go somewhere or to leave but the people he talks to usually become his targets. He stalks people while they're sleeping, if you wake up and he doesn't kill you he kills someone close by that you know. He doesn't care who he kills, he just wants to scare people and he'll always kill you eventually."

"During the latest mission the team had we saw him, he was hiding in a forest outside New York city. If one of his victims hasn't shown up yet they will soon, it's nearly impossible to tell who he'll kill so I can't stop it, no matter how much I want to."

Phantom looked a bit angry but he quickly recovered, "Next we have Eyeless Jack, now this guy is a mystery. I couldn't find his name, where he lived, nor could I figure out if he was ever human. What I do know is that he's a cannibal and he eats peoples kidneys, he takes the kidneys of his victims."

"He doesn't always kill them at first but he usually comes back to finish the job, he almost never leaves witnesses. He's surprisingly strong and despite the fact that he doesn't have eyes he can still see as if he did. He knows a lot about human anatomy which makes it easy for him to remove someone's kidney."

"He usually tortures his victims and the knowledge he has allows him to inflict the most amount of pain possible without killing them or making them pass out."

Captain Atom spoke, "How do you know that?"

Phantom sighed, "You really don't want to know." The heroes looked like they were about to say something else but Phantom cut them off. "Now let's move on to Ben, as you can see he looks like a demonic version of a video game character named Link. Whether he's a ghost, actually a video game character, or something else entirely isn't clear."

"He can take over electronics via a game cartridge and if he's connected to other devices he can take over those too. He likes to mess with people, his behavior is like what you'd expect from a child but he's smart. When he starts to get bored he kills people, usually by drowning them, and the game cartridge is then passed on to someone else."

"Obviously he isn't confined to the cartridge but there's only so much he can do outside of it, most of his power comes from being inside electronics. I don't know a lot about him since I don't know his origins but I know enough to say you shouldn't mess with him. I guess that leads to the final killer, Laughing Jack, that clown is one sick son of a bitch."

"He kills more kids then anything but he's killed adults to, when I say he's messed up it's a serious understatement. From what I can tell his first victim was a man named Isaac who also killed people, namely women. After the police searched the house it was abandoned and everything was left there, I searched that place top to bottom."

"Isaac made furniture out of the bodies of his victims, anything he didn't use he put in acid to get rid of. Based on other things I know about Laughing Jack I've come up with at least a partial timeline of Laughing Jack's life." Phantom took out a small box with a crank like one of those jack in the box toys you'd see in stores.

"I found this in the house, it's empty now but I think it used to be Jack's and it was given to Isaac when he was a child. Apparently Isaac killed his neighbors cat when he was a child but claimed his imaginary friend Laughing Jack did it. He was sent to boarding school and didn't go back to the house for years and I'm pretty sure Laughing Jack was stuck in this box that whole time."

"He can't get out on his own so he had no choice but to wait, when Isaac came back to the house he started killing people. If Laughing Jack hadn't been messed up before he definitely was after that, I think it's what led to him killing. Isaac was tortured before his death, ever since then there have been reports of killings similar to Isaac's."

"Like I said most of them involve kids, I really don't want to go into detail but I kind of have to so you know who these guys are." Phantom took a breath, "Laughing Jack can do a number of things, I'm not even sure if I know about everything he can do. He's got quite a wrap sheet but there's no mistaking his MO when it comes to the murders."

"He disembowels his victims and stuffs them with candy, I've seen some of the bodies and believe me you do not want the actual images. Like I said he's messed up, beyond twisted, I sincerely hope you never see these guys face to face."

The heroes were silent as they went through the information in their heads, Phantom looked tired. Some of this had probably been difficult to talk about and the heroes didn't think they wanted to know how he knew all of this. Green Arrow eventually spoke, "I hate to ask this, I really do, but you didn't just stumble across all of this so how'd you find out?"

Phantom was quiet for a minute, "I'd heard about some murders in a small town, I found all of it odd. There were no fingerprints, no signs of forced entry, and all of them were killed in a similar way and yet no one knew who might have done it. I figured I might as well try to get to the bottom of it and I tracked the killer to a forest that was well known for the fact that people disappeared in there."

"I saw the pages but didn't take them at the time, I searched for hours and came across the house. I was there for four months, that was honestly the worst thing I'd ever gone through but I learned about all of them during that time. When I escaped they came after me, I was a witness, I had been tracking them down, they couldn't let me get away."

"I was lucky, they didn't know I had powers and I managed to escape by fighting tooth and nail to get out. Ever since then I've found anything and everything I could on them, I've run into them god knows how many times since then. I've almost died more times then I can remember and it was all to try and stop them but nothing has worked."

"I know they're looking for me and sooner or later they'll find me, I'll either end up dead or go missing. They know I'm doing all of this and they're not going to stop until either I'm dead or they are."

The heroes were silent once again and Phantom rubbed his eyes, "I'm going to sleep for a year. If you decide to look through this stuff do it at your own risk and put everything back, I will be pissed if something is missing. But I will leave you with this, don't be an idiot and try to find them on your own, you don't know what they'll do."

"They've been killing people for a very long time, if you see them run, for once don't be the hero. I know how to fight them, I know how to survive but you don't, I will handle them but do not put yourselves in danger." Phantom rubbed his eyes again, "And with that I'm going to bed."

Phantom then walked out of the room and used the zeta tubes to get to the mountain before going to his room and practically passing out on the bed. Meanwhile, the heroes were still trying to grasp what they had just been told, how had they never heard about this? A group of killers that were responsible for god knows how many murders and no one knew about them.

The only one that did had been trying in vain to get people to listen and kept putting himself in harms way to try and save people. How Phantom had been handling all of this on his own was a mystery, it was about time someone helped him.
