The summer of 1946 was a very odd summer, at least for Angelina Foster it was.  She had expected she'd live a normal life.  But, as a naive 13 year old girl she, of course, was wrong.

  It all started when the warm season began. The grass was a bright and fresh shade of green on the lawns of the wealthy, and even the poorest man in the town's settlement had a light shade of green hinting his yard.  Angelina, or Angie as she preferred to be called, lived in a large estate.  Her backyard was huge, it was so big and had so many thick bushes it was like a never ending maze.  Her parents warned her day after day to never step foot in her backyard without their supervision. 

  But, the more people told Angie to not do things, the need to do them increased. "Angelina, sit up straight." Her father would order. Angelina would slouch. "Angelina, keep your feet off the furniture!"  Her mother would reprimand.  Angelina would leisurely kick her feet up on the antique coffee table.

"When will my parents learn, I'm not going to respond to directness. I respond to deception." Angelina muttered to herself as she stared out her large bedroom window.  She heard the the rumble of an engine and saw her parents filing into a Ford. Finally.  She'd get to be alone.  She quietly listened for the sounds of the maids and the butlers retreating to their chambers, before silently sneaking down the stairs. She took a deep breath and straightened out her tight corset that was under her frilly white dress. She stepped foot into her backyard, for the first time. She glanced back at her big Victorian house and made a final decision. She was not returning until she had seen the world.
